EFTA pact key to drive Malaysia's export resilience, competitiveness: FMM

KUALA LUMPUR: The Federation of Malaysian Manufacturing (FMM) says the country's European Free Trade Association (EFTA) economic partnership agreement is a crucial move to strengthen the nation's export resilience and competitiveness.
The agreement, covering all industrial products, provides duty-free access for over 90 per cent of Malaysia's exports to the four EFTA countries - Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein.
FMM president Tan Sri Soh Thian Lai said the pact is timely amid growing global economic uncertainties.
"This is an important agreement to support the robust growth and resilience of Malaysian manufacturers amidst intensifying global uncertainties and recent geopolitical shifts," he said in a statement.
He added that agreement offers more than tariff elimination, incorporating commitments to green mobility, digitalisation and innovation - factors that can attract high-tech investments into Malaysia.
"FMM believes that agreement will give Malaysian manufacturers a competitive advantage and a stable route into high-value European markets, helping to reduce exposure to global economic disruptions and support long-term growth," Soh added.
Additionally, the agreement is expected to benefit small and medium enterprises through broader preferential access and duty-free entry into European markets.
The agreement was inked in Oslo, and with Malaysia's total trade with EFTA countries reaching RM14.4 billion in 2024, it is seen as a strategic boost for the manufacturing sector.
Tapping into the EFTA bloc, manufacturers will be able to drive innovation, enhance export performance, and strengthen their position within resilient global supply chains, aligning with Malaysia's broader economic transformation goals.
"FMM encourages the industry to fully leverage the opportunities under this agreement and remains committed to supporting businesses in making the most of this important trade framework," Soh said.

Ukraine Aims Information Technology Trade Expansion With Malaysia

Charge d'Affaires ad interim of the Embassy of Ukraine in Malaysia Denys Mykhailiuk featuring on Bernama TV's programme, The Nation. By Nur Elysa Amirah Suhaimi & Nur Atiq Maisarah Suhaimi KUALA LUMPUR, June 24 (Bernama) -- Ukraine is looking to expand its trade footprint in Malaysia by promoting its information technology (IT) sector, including digital and artificial intelligence solutions, as a key driver of future economic cooperation between the two countries. Charge d'Affaires ad interim of the Embassy of Ukraine in Malaysia, Denys Mykhailiuk, said that while Malaysia and Ukraine have traditionally traded commodities such as palm oil and sunflower oil, the time has come to diversify into high-tech industries, without sidelining existing trade in oils. bootstrap slideshow 'Trading in services is very important now, and we are one of the biggest countries in IT, so we hope that our experience and our digital products might be useful for Malaysians to become a digital nation as well. 'We know for a fact that the Ukrainian IT and artificial intelligence sectors are definitely admirable, and we have also seen that they have attracted Malaysian interest,' he said during an interview on Bernama TV's programme The Nation, titled Bridging Continents: Malaysia–Ukraine Relations in Focus, on Tuesday. He also mentioned that discussions have already been initiated with relevant Malaysian ministries, including potential areas of collaboration in innovation and cybersecurity. 'For the digital products, we are talking to the Ministry of Digitalisation, and the police as well, because it is a slightly different system in Ukraine. 'In Ukraine, the Ministry of Digitalisation has the aegis authority over all other agencies, whereas here, you have some kind of competition, in which every ministry is responsible for its part,' he said. Acknowledging structural differences between the two countries, Mykhailiuk said these challenges do not hinder business-to-business (B2B) ties, which he described as strong and promising.

Electricity Tariff Restructuring Offers Greater Cost Transparency -- FMM

BUSINESS KUALA LUMPUR, June 24 (Bernama) -- The Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers (FMM) has welcomed the electricity tariff restructuring under the Regulatory Period 4 (RP4), describing it as a rebasing exercise that offers greater cost transparency and encourages demand-side management. In a statement today, FMM said the new structure reflects a 19 per cent overall reduction in tariff rates, taking into account current fuel prices. 'FMM would also like to thank the government for the RM5 billion allocated to absorb the fuel cost adjustment during the first half of the year due to the delay in the RP4 implementation,' it said. FMM said 70 per cent of medium voltage users are expected to see lower bills, while the remaining 30 per cent may face higher costs and should improve load management and energy efficiency. 'In particular, FMM greatly welcomes the increase in the off-peak hours by 80 per cent from 70 hours to 128 hours per week, including the off-peak rates for weekends which FMM has been advocating for the past decades,' it said. FMM noted that the new automated fuel adjustment mechanism, which replaces the imbalance cost pass-through system, would provide a more robust and effective way to reflect energy prices in line with market conditions. FMM also called for a review of the tariff structure for the high-voltage time-of-use category to ensure that the tariff remains competitive and attractive in the long term for the high-voltage users. The federation said that it also looks forward to further announcements on renewable energy (RE) schemes, including the green electricity tariff, following the restructuring exercise, to support greater adoption of RE in the industrial sector. -- BERNAMA

EU approves MotoGP takeover by F1 owner Liberty Media

THE acquisition of MotoGP by Liberty Media, the American group that owns Formula One, received the green light from The European Commission on Monday. Liberty and the Commission both released statements saying the deal had received 'unconditional approval'. 'The deal is now expected to close no later than July 3, 2025, opening the door to a new era for the sport,' said MotoGP on its web site. Liberty had agreed to buy the motor-cycle grand prix competition from Dorna Sports in April 2024, but the European Commission opened an investigation to determine whether the merger violated competition rules. Colorado-based Liberty said it would acquire 84 percent of MotoGP with Dorna, a Madrid-based company, retaining 16 per cent in a deal that valued the company at 4.3 billion euros ($5 billion). The Commission had been concerned 'that the transaction could lead to an increase in licensing prices for broadcasting rights to motorsports events.' On Monday the Commission said it was satisfied that, in the European national markets it investigated, 'the companies are not close competitors for the licensing of broadcasting rights for sports content.' The Commission also looked at Liberty Media's relationship with parent company Liberty Global, a leading cable operator in several European countries. The statement said there was 'insufficient evidence that Mr. John Malone, Liberty Media's largest shareholder, could exercise decisive influence over Liberty Global.' 'We are thrilled,' said Derek Chang, Liberty Media President and Chief Executive Officer, in the company statement. 'MotoGP is a highly attractive premium sports asset with incredible racing, a passionate fanbase and a strong cash flow profile. We believe the sport and brand have significant growth potential.' Since Liberty took control of F1 in 2017, it has implemented an expansion strategy, particularly in the United States, making spectacle its main focus. With the help of the long-running Netflix series 'Drive to Survive,' the group has attracted a younger, more female audience. 'MotoGP is one of the most thrilling sports on earth, and we look forward to accelerating the sport's growth and expanding its reach to even more fans around the world,' said Dorna chief executive Carmelo Ezpeleta in the Liberty statement. As part of the deal Ezpeleta, CEO since 1998, and his team will continue to run MotoGP. 'Liberty is the best possible partner for our sport and the entire MotoGP community, and we are excited to create even greater value for our fans, commercial partners and everyone competing,' he said.
