In surprising move, Knicks fire Tom Thibodeau as head coach
Despite the Knicks reaching the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time in 25 years — and then team star Jalen Brunson sticking up for him — Tom Thibodeau has been fired as head coach of the New York Knicks.

The news comes just days after the Knicks finished their best playoff result in a quarter century. However, the franchise is focused on winning a title and believes that a ceiling has been reached, necessitating a new voice to lead the locker room, according to reports. The decision was made by team president Leon Rose, a close confidant of Thibodeau's, with the support of owner James Dolan, reports Ian Begley of SNY.TV.
The firing appeared to catch the Knicks players off guard.
Forever Grateful 🧡💙 Thank You! https://t.co/a81D5SST1d
Heading into the playoffs, there was a buzz in league circles that if the New York Knicks got bounced in the first two rounds of the playoffs, head coach Tom Thibodeau's job would be in jeopardy. However, after the team made the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time in 25 years, and considering Thibodeau's close ties to Rose and Brunson, it was thought by many around the league that Thibs had earned another chance.
The limitations exposed by the Pacers in the East finals were a combination of Rose and the front office not giving the Knicks enough of a bench and Thibodeau's reluctance to trust players he did have, like Landry Shamet, who stepped up when called upon. The problem of constructing a roster that could not defend — a team that had to play the gutty but undersized Brunson and center Karl-Anthony Towns, whose defensive deficiencies were on full display in Game 6 — should not be placed on Thibodeau.
Among the early names to watch as a replacement are Michael Malone (who was just let go by Denver near the end of the season) and whispers of college coaches such as Jay Wright.

Charles Barkley Takes Shot At Knicks After Firing Tom Thibodeau
Charles Barkley Takes Shot At Knicks After Firing Tom Thibodeau originally appeared on Athlon Sports. After defeating the defending champion Boston Celtics in six games, Tom Thibodeau and the New York Knicks saw their season come to an end in the Eastern Conference finals, falling to the Indiana Pacers. Advertisement Thibodeau joined the Knicks in 2020 and has made it to the NBA playoffs in four of his five seasons there. However, despite the recent success, New York elected to part ways with Thibodeau following its elimination. The Knicks have looked into interviewing four current NBA head coaches, including the Dallas Mavericks' Jason Kidd, the Minnesota Timberwolves' Chris Finch, the Houston Rockets' Ime Udoka and the Atlanta Hawks' Quin Snyder. However, according to ESPN's Shams Charania, the Hawks became the fourth team to deny the Knicks an interview, leaving New York empty-handed to begin its coaching search. Outside of these four potential candidates, New York hasn't revealed much of a plan going forward without Thibodeau. And NBA legend Charles Barkley does not approve. NBA analyst Charles Barkley criticized the New York Jairaj-Imagn Images On Wednesday, Barkley joined ESPN for its pregame coverage of Game 3 of the NBA Finals between the Pacers and the Oklahoma City Thunder. The former Phoenix Suns forward was not pleased with New York's coaching decision, calling them out live on air. Advertisement "The Knicks gotta be the stupidest damn people in the world," Barkley said. "Like, you don't fire a good coach like that and don't have a plan. I mean, Thibs did a hell of a job. Obviously, something's going on there, but you don't have a plan, and now, the three coaches turn you down. You gotta have a plan, man. And they don't have a plan. Now... I mean, I don't know what the hell they are going to do." Although Thibodeau hasn't won an NBA championship as a head coach, he has still put together an impressive coaching resume. He won two NBA Coach of the Year awards and even led the Knicks to their first conference finals in 25 years. Isiah Thomas: "Kobe Bryant Did Not Become Kobe... [Michael] Jordan Did Not Win, Until Phil Jackson Got There"
Isiah Thomas: "Kobe Bryant Did Not Become Kobe... [Michael] Jordan Did Not Win, Until Phil Jackson Got There" originally appeared on Fadeaway World. Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, and almost all the NBA legends credit a major part of their success to finding the right coach in their careers. From finding the balance between discipline and maximizing strengths to devising a system that allows superstar players to flourish, the head coach has a massive responsibility on their shoulders. NBA legend Isiah Thomas believes Rick Carlisle could be the perfect fit for Tyrese Haliburton and the Pacers to do so. Advertisement Rick Carlisle, who has been a coach for the past 23 years, could be the right man to elevate Haliburton's game and the Pacers to a championship-caliber team, says Thomas. Before Game 2 of the NBA Finals, he appeared on the pre-game show on ABC with Shaquille O'Neal and Kenny Smith to speak about the importance of a good coach. "You went to the NBA Finals, but you didn't win an NBA championship until you met Phil Jackson," said Thomas to O'Neal. "Kobe Bryant did not become Kobe until Phil Jackson got there. Jordan did not win until Phil Jackson got him." "You've got a coach in this series by the name of Rick Carlisle, 65 years old, and we saw him the other night run a triple stagger that none of these OKC players had seen before. Rick Carlisle is bringing out some old-school stuff... OKC is playing against an old-school offense, five-six-seven players in double figures. Sometimes they come down and they don't even dribble the ball in half court, and they're passing, moving, and cutting, and it ain't no isolation, one on one, shaky-shaky-shaky-shaky go left. This is a different style of basketball that OKC ain't used to playing against." What Thomas meant to say was that he's bringing a bag of plays and tricks to the game that the opposition has never seen before. Therefore, it gives him an edge over the opposition, irrespective of whether it's the Thunder or any other team. The value of good coaching should not be lost in the era obsessed with finding the face of the NBA and the next big superstar in the league. Advertisement Phil Jackson joined the Bulls in the 1989-90 season and just one season after losing to the Pistons in the Eastern Conference Finals, Jackson figured out how to beat them and win the Bulls their first championship in 1991. Before his arrival, Michael Jordan could not win beyond the conference finals in the Playoffs. Similarly, in 1999, after moving on from the Bulls, Jackson signed with the Lakers to coach Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant. Before his arrival, O'Neal had been to the NBA finals with the Magic but never won a championship. His impact on the Lakers was immediate, as the Lakers won three consecutive titles after he joined them. As the only coach in NBA history with two three-peats, Jackson's contributions to the NBA world have revitalized the importance of a good coach in today's league. The series is tied 1-1 heading into Game 3, with the Pacers returning to Gainbridge Fieldhouse after stealing a dramatic opener in Oklahoma City following a game-winning shot by Tyrese Haliburton. Indiana Pacers guard Tyrese Haliburton lines up a Terada-Imagn Images Before tipoff of the first two games of the NBA Finals in Oklahoma City, Haliburton arrived carrying his recently revealed signature shoe, Puma Hali 1's, in hand. Advertisement However, before Game 3, Haliburton's shift in apparel caught plenty of fans' attention, as he was seen in an entirely different outfit. 'He didn't like how the first 2 games played out lol,' one fan said. 'Brought his purse for the home game?' another wrote. 'This man is locked in tonight,' said another fan. Another response wrote, 'This dude is corny.' 'He's home and his shoes are already there,' mentioned another fan. 'Dark magic full effect,' a fan said. Haliburton has delivered in the biggest moments throughout Indiana's playoff run, hitting game-winners against Milwaukee, Cleveland and Oklahoma City. His buzzer-beater in Game 1 of the NBA Finals—an off-balance jumper with 0.3 seconds left—was his fifth career go-ahead shot in the final five seconds of a playoff game.
