The 6 signs of Tudor ‘old man' disease that triggers hot attacks and deformities – as Josie Gibson reveals diagnosis

The Irish Sun23-04-2025

FOR centuries, gout has been shrugged off by many as a rich, wine-guzzling old man's disease.
And when Henry VIII was diagnosed with it, it became firmly entrenched in popular belief as 'a tudor disease'.

The truth is, gout doesn't discriminate - it can strike anyone, regardless of gender, wealth, age, or lifestyle.
Around one to two in every 100 people in the UK are thought to have gout - and cases are on the rise.
The most recent data, from 2013
found the prevalence of people diagnosed with gout in the UK rose by 64 per cent between 1997 and 2012.
Obesity,
One of these is TV personality Josie Gibson, who has recently opened up about suffering from the agonising ailment.

"I thought gout was only for old men but I have been living quite a lavish life," Josie, 40, recalled.
"Before I filmed this show, I caught a lot of flights, I drank a lot of champagne, I ate a lot of rich food and I had little sleep. That's how I ended up getting gout."

spoke about developing pre-gout during a conversation with Jamie Laing on The Great Company podcast.
Gout is a form of inflammatory arthritis caused by excessive uric acid in the blood.
It causes tiny, needle-like crystals to form in the joints, triggering inflammation that leads to pain, swelling, and redness - most commonly in the big toe.
If left untreated, it can lead to joint deformities,
Josie confirmed she is now gout-free after returning to a less lavish diet.
"As soon as I stopped catching all the flights and started drinking a bit more water and less champagne, it levelled itself out," she said.

There is no cure for gout, meaning people who have it are prone to flare-ups.
These flare-ups can be triggered by foods
rich in purine (the substance that creates uric acid in the blood when broken down by the body).
This includes liver, anchovies, mackerel, dried beans and peas and yeast-rich drinks and foods, particularly beer.
Routine blood tests will usually identify excess levels of uric acid, which will alert doctors to the need for treatment.
But most people won't know they have gout until they suffer a sudden, painful flare-up.
Symptoms of the disease include:
Severe pain in any joint (usually the big toe, fingers, wrists, elbows or knees)
Red, hot or swollen skin over the affected joint. "Gout does not cause lasting damage to joints if you get treatment straight away" says the NHS
Warmth in the joint area
Chills and fever
Deformities
Hard lumps, called tophi, under your skin (can be painful)
According to the

Drinking plenty of water helps flush uric acid from your body, reducing the risk of crystal formation in your joints, it adds.
Alongside this, lifestyle changes are necessary

If you find yourself in the grip of an agonising attack, the most important thing is to treat the affected joint with a great deal of tender loving care.

The Gout Society suggests resting the joint in an elevated position.
And while regular exercise is advisable once the flare-up has subsided, it is never, ever a good idea to try to run on a gouty foot.
The lesser known symptoms of gout
While gout is commonly associated with joint pain and swelling, there are several lesser-known symptoms that may not immediately be linked to the condition
Dr Hilary Jones, a TV medic shares the signs to watch out for:
Thick nails:
Chronic gout can cause changes in the nails of the affected fingers or toes due to tophi – deposits of uric acid crystals under the skin. These deposits can result in discolored or thickened nails as they build up.
Erectile Dysfunction (ED):
Men with gout are at a higher risk of developing erectile dysfunction, with studies suggesting they may experience more severe cases. This is thought to be related to the systemic inflammation and vascular problems associated with gout.
Pain at nightime:
Gout attacks often occur at night, causing sharp, intense pain that disrupts sleep. Even outside of flare-ups, some individuals experience ongoing joint discomfort or sensitivity that worsens during the night.
Itchy or peeling skin around the joint:
After a severe flare-up, the skin over the affected joint may peel or flake, often accompanied by itchiness. This happens as inflammation subsides and the body works to repair the damaged skin.
Chronic fatigue:
Though primarily a joint condition, gout can leave sufferers feeling unusually tired or drained. Many report low energy or a general sense of malaise before or during an attack, further impacting their daily activities.

Cellulite creams don't work and nothing replicates a facelift – but here's what you CAN do about ageing

ELIZABETH HURLEY turns 60 this week - and no doubt attention will turn to how well she looks. Having interviewed her many times, I can confirm she really does look as good close up as she does in photos. So what's her secret? 9 This Morning's Nadine Baggott, 62, has spent over three decades working in the beauty industry Credit: Elisabeth Hoff 9 Stunning Elizabeth Hurley turns 60 this month Credit: Getty She has the best products, aesthetics doctors, hairdressers, nutritionists and personal trainers on speed dial - and it is also her job to look good. But what about the rest of us? As a beauty expert, it's my job to sort through the noise and discover what really works - and aged 62-and-a-half, I've tested thousands of products, treatments and This is everything I've learned. SKINCARE You may be surprised to hear that you don't need to spend a fortune on expensive products. Dermatologists I've spoken to all say the same thing. 'Use a vitamin C serum every morning, top it with an SPF50 in place of your moisturiser and then use a vitamin A retinoid at night,' advises my dermatologist, Dr Emma Craythorne from Discovery+'s The Bad Skin Clinic. Everything else is window dressing. Just choose the supporting gentle cleanser, moisturiser and serums that you enjoy using and can afford. 9 This SPF doubles up as a moisturiser Credit: Avene Avène Ultra Fluid Invisible SPF50 for Sensitive Skin, £21 Use this in place of your moisturiser because it does it all, and remember to use it on your neck and chest, too (I have learned that lesson the hard way). 9 With 15% vitamin C, this serum will brighten skin and reduce pigmentation Credit: Paula's Choice Paula's Choice C15 Super Booster, £44.20 This brightens skin, boosts collagen to keep skin firmer, and protects against pollution and sunlight. 9 Nothing regenerates skin as well as retinol Credit: No7 No7 Pure Retinol 1% Retinol Night Concentrate, £39.95 A gold-standard night-repair product, this will help reverse signs of ageing like fine lines and wrinkles, pigmentation, dullness, hormonal breakouts and enlarged pores. TWEAKMENTS In the 30 years I have been writing and talking about beauty, there has been a revolution in tweakments. Back then only celebrities had Botox and But what's really worth your money? 'Neuromodulators (Botox) for sure,' says This Morning's expert Dr Wassim Taktouk of The Taktouk Clinic. 'In 15 minutes, you can erase expression lines caused by frowning, smiling and raising your eyebrows in a way that no product can match. 'During the few days after your treatment, you will slowly notice your lines softening and then maybe even disappearing,' he adds. Trust me, 99% of famous people are having tweakments, they just like to deny it! Lasers are a great way of erasing oil . Don't feel guilty: no one knew better at the time. A doctor can use a laser to target redness, brown spots, large pores, uneven texture and even those annoying chin hairs. The key is to find a clinic you trust and an aesthetician who knows their stuff. Don't be afraid to ask friends and contacts for recommendations. FILLER I am reluctant to recommend filler simply because it does not suit all face shapes. I have a large face that's prone to puffiness, so it's not for me. If, however, you have a fine bone structure, thin face or lips and want to put that young, plump look back into your face, then it can work wonders. SURGERY I am going to say this once and very loudly: if you are looking in the mirror and lifting your skin up with your fingers in an attempt to get rid of a turkey neck and sagging cheeks or jowls, no tweakment can replicate that effect. That's when celebrities choose deep plane facelifts. Hollywood can forgive smile lines and grey hair, but it's very unforgiving of a lax jawline or neck, so a lot of famous women and men over 50 have lower facelifts. It's why looking at celebrities the same age as you should never make you feel bad, as they have all had a lot of work done. Having said that, if you are considering surgery and can afford it, a facelift will restore the facial contours you had 20 years ago. 9 Liz Hurley works hard to maintain her body Credit: Getty BODY If you want to look and feel better, you need to do three things - walk everywhere, lift weights to build muscle and bone strength, and do some sort of core exercise like yoga or Pilates. I haven't worked out in three years since moving house and I have noticed the difference in my flexibility and strength, and I've developed the dreaded bingo wings. Elizabeth Hurley works out to look good when she's wearing a bikini. 9 Liz wows in a bikini while holidaying in the Maldives last month Credit: Instagram In their 20s, many women are blessed with good genes, but in their 60s, anyone who still feels confident wearing a bikini has worked really hard for it. They will also have watched what they eat very carefully. When it comes to skin, the body needs the same ingredients as the face. Skin is skin, so no neck cream or cellulite cream, no stretchmark cream or miracle slimming gel is going to work. It's simple – wear SPF when you go in the sun and use a retinol body lotion every night. 9 To reduce scars and texture on your body, use a retinol moisturiser Credit: Naturium Naturium Retinol Body Lotion, £27 Suitable for daily use, this thick body lotion sinks in quickly, smooths rough texture and moisturises limbs while fading scars and stretch marks over time. Don't expect miracles - slow and steady wins the race with bodycare. HAIR Your hair changes texture as it ages – it can become thin and fine and what's there can change to weirdly frizzy if it goes grey. To colour or not colour is up to you, but if you go lighter, remember to keep your roots and underneath sections slightly darker as that is far more youthful. Apply a hair oil to your mid-lengths and ends before shampooing, and also use it afterwards to smooth and add shine. 9 This bargain oil will help reduce frizz and strengthen hair Credit: Pantene Pantene Repair & Protect Hair Oil, £7.99 Don't overspend on haircare – trust me, the big beauty brands really deliver. If your hair is starting to thin, have a blood test. 'You need to check your hormones and nutrition levels, as knowing the cause of hair loss and the type of hair loss means we can treat it,' explains trichologist Lisa Caddy at Philip Kingsley. No supplement can replace good medical advice. Finally, remember what Hollywood legend Bette Davis said: 'Getting old is not for sissies.' But it's also a huge privilege. Follow Nadine on Instagram Everything you need to know about hair loss Marie Nieuwoudt, a Group Education Manager at What are the common causes of hair loss? Marie explained: "There are so many reasons why someone may face hair loss. "The number one reason is usually hormonal changes or underlying health conditions (like thyroid conditions), and stress of course also plays a big part in changes to your hair health. "But another very common day-to-day cause is excessive damage to your hair created by mistakes in your styling routines – and this a big one to be aware of for people who are regularly applying heat to their hair! "It's important to know the right temperature for your hair type when using styling tools, as this is essential in reducing unintentional heat damage. "I also see a lot of people facing hair loss resulting from hereditary conditions, which are passed down from generation to generation." What are the best hairstyles people should try to reduce their hair loss? According to Marie: "Less is more when it comes to hair loss! It's important to be gentle with your hair, so a low-maintenance style that limits pulling on your scalp will be your best option. "Putting your hair up in a tight ponytail or adding hair clips can cause stress points at the roots. "Instead, try leaving your hair down, or out. "You're not limited in your options, but it pays to be intentional with your hair styling. Using tools which limit damage to your hair is vital. "Discussing your concerns with a hairdresser or hair loss specialist is also a great way to find styles that suit your specific needs, whilst still making sure you look and feel your best." How long does it take for hair loss to stop? If you're itching to know when your hair will grow back, Marie confirmed: "Hair loss is a personal journey – and it's different for everyone, so it's very difficult to put exact timings on this process. "Every head of hair is unique, and so too is your hair loss experience. "As always, you can speak to a professional hairdresser or trichologist about your specific concerns and hair changes, and they'll be able to help you manage those expectations. "I can't emphasise enough how important it is to be kind to your hair. Most people treat their hair quite roughly, and this is something you definitely want to avoid when dealing with hair loss in particular. "Make sure you're choosing products and styling routines that you know are good for your hair, rather than causing additional damage."

WITH fists pumping and arms aloft, racing great Michael Schumacher celebrated his many victories with the same energy as his driving. Off the track he would party with pals, smoke big cigars, sky dive, scuba dive and fly helicopters. 'Michael communicates with his eyes' But nothing has been seen of Michael since his Rumours of medical miracles, appearances, fresh photos and interviews frequently spread online. But a Formula One insider tells The Sun that like Flavio, the world needs to get used to not seeing Michael's beaming smile anymore. Craig Scarborough, who has been covering the sport for around 25 years and interviewed Michael many times, reveals: 'I spoke to someone who is very, very close to him and they just explained we're not going to hear any more from him. Emotional moment Michael Schumacher's son and Sebastian Vettel pay tribute to stricken F1 legend 'He's in a comfortable position as far as he can be with his state of health.' It has been reported that only three people see Michael at his secluded home on the Spanish island of Majorca. Even Flavio, 75, who has been a close friend of Michael since they began working together at the Benetton racing team in 1991, has not seen him for a while. But the Italian says he 'often' speaks to Much of her time is said to be consumed by maintaining her husband's care and keeping the exact details of his current health condition a secret. And Yilmaz Tozturkan, 53, and his son Daniel Lins, 30, threatened to publish videos and pictures of Michael unless they were Security guard Markus Fritsche had copied the private material while working for the Schumachers and sold it to the two men. 7 Michael on the slopes in Italy in 2003 Credit: Rex Features 7 Corinna and Gina accepting a German lifetime achievement award on Michael's behalf in 2022 in Cologne Credit: Rex In February the trio were found guilty of their part in the Fritsche was given a two-year suspended sentence, while Tozturkan was jailed for three years and Lins was given a six-month suspended prison sentence by a German court. Corinna wanted a harsher sentence for Fritsche. She said: 'What still shocks me most is the massive breach of trust. 'He should receive a punishment for this that deters others from potentially doing the same.' And last October stories emerged claiming that Guests and staff had to hand over their mobile phones, while security guards made sure no one could snoop on the ceremony or party. But Michael's former Benetton teammate Johnny Herbert said: 'From what I understand, that was We do everything we can to make Michael better and to make sure he's comfortable. Corinna Schumacher While it remains possible that Schumacher did attend the wedding in a wheelchair, another story was definitely made up. Last year Corinna successfully sued German magazine Die Aktuelle for claiming on its cover 'Michael Schumacher, the first interview!' In fact the quotes had been generated by artificial intelligence. What no outsider can be sure about is whether Michael could give an interview if he wanted to. There have been conflicting accounts of his health condition. When Michael's head hit a boulder in the skiing accident 12 years ago, it split his helmet in two. The brain injury was so serious that he spent 250 days in a coma. The best medical treatment that money could buy brought the sports star, worth £468million, back to consciousness. There had been rumours that further treatment in Paris had allowed Michael to take small steps, but that was later dismissed. 7 Michael won a record-breaking seven Formula One world championships Credit: Getty 7 Flavio Briatore, seen here at Monaco GP last month, spoke about his former Benetton driver Credit: Getty Most people in the know indicate that he is unable to talk, although it is possible he could use eye movements to send messages like the late scientist Stephen Hawking did. In 2020 Flavio's former wife Elisabetta Gregoraci claimed: 'Michael doesn't speak, he communicates with his eyes.' Friends do visit and he still follows sports. Former Ferrari F1 chief Jean Todt said: 'I can see him but of course, what I miss is what we used to do together. 'I watch Grand Prix with Michael.' Corinna also indicated there was an attempt to maintain normality in difficult circumstances. She said in a 2021 Netflix documentary: 'We're together. 'We live together at home. 'We do therapy. 'We're trying to carry on as a family' 'We do everything we can to make Michael better and to make sure he's comfortable. And to simply make him feel our family, our bond. 'And no matter what, I will do everything I can. We all will. 'We're trying to carry on as a family, the way Michael liked it and still does.' I hope they can find happiness in the situation they find themselves in. Craig Scarborough It was reported by German media, ahead of the ten-year anniversary of his skiing accident in 2023, that Schumacher receives 24-hour care from a team of up to 15 people. He has been driven in a Mercedes road car, and played sounds from the F1 track, to stimulate his brain with familiar noises. There has been plenty of good family news to lift Michael's spirits. Last month he became a grandfather for the first time when Gina gave birth to her daughter Millie. And his son Mick, 26, is said to have found love with Danish model Laila Hasanovic, 23, who is reportedly trusted enough to have visited Michael. Mick, who spent two years as a F1 driver, was only 14 when his dad suffered the debilitating head injury. In the He commented: 'I think dad and I would understand each other in a different way now, simply because we speak a similar language, the language of motorsport, and we would have a lot to talk about. "That's where my head is at most of the time, thinking that would be so cool. I'd give anything just for that.' Craig reckons having close personal time with Mick and other family members is vital for the stricken motorsports star. Physical workload He says: 'I think a lot of people demand stuff from him and I think that's wrong. 'He is himself, and his family have a lot to contend with. 'Until you've cared for somebody, I don't think anyone realises the emotion and the physical workload. "The fact that they have been bold enough to withdraw from public life and not be tempted to do exclusives out there to various people, I think, is noble, and I hope that continues. 'I hope they can find happiness in the situation they find themselves in.' Like Flavio, Craig is more comfortable talking about the Michael people knew before the ski tragedy. He says: 'He was a guy who enjoyed his personal time. 'He loved his family. 'He did lots of lovely things. 'He clearly liked a drink. 'He loved a big cigar. 'But he had lots of time to bring up his son.' While it is understandable that Michael's army of fans want to hear from him again, they may have to make do with recalling his past glories. There were certainly more than enough of them for Flavio and others to remember.
