Mamelodi Sundowns' quest to become the most successful South African side in continental football resumes this Saturday when they welcome Egyptian outfit Pyramids FC to Loftus Versfeld Stadium for the first leg of the CAF Champions League final (kick-off at 3pm).
The Brazilians are chasing their second Champions League crown — their last triumph came in 2016 under Pitso Mosimane. This marks their first appearance in the final since that historic victory nearly a decade ago.
In what promises to be a blockbuster clash against one of the tournament's surprise packages, Obakeng Meletse highlights five key players who could take Sundowns a step closer to a dream result in Saturday's opening leg.

Teboho Mokoena
The dead-ball specialist has not only been instrumental on set-pieces but has also brought invaluable experience to the squad during this continental campaign. Mokoena has been one of Sundowns' standout performers, orchestrating play from deep and linking effectively with the attack. Having featured in all ten matches of this year's tournament and providing a key assist, Mokoena was also a driving force in their recent domestic title triumph. His leadership and composure will be crucial across both legs as the Brazilians aim to etch their name in African football history once more.

Marcelo Allende
The ever-consistent Chilean attacking midfielder quietly anchors the midfield, providing structure and stability in key moments. Allende's intelligence in possession, ability to dictate tempo, and knack for finding space could prove decisive — especially against a Pyramids FC side known for committing numbers forward. His role in breaking up play and launching attacks from deep positions will be vital in both managing the pace of the game and exploiting defensive gaps left by the visitors.

Grant Kekana
With the first leg at home, keeping a clean sheet is paramount — and Grant Kekana will play a central role in that objective. A seasoned defender, Kekana has featured in various centre-back pairings this season, most recently alongside Mosa Lebusa, who is expected to partner him again on Saturday. Sundowns have conceded just one goal in ten matches since the group stage, and much of that defensive solidity stems from Kekana's leadership and organisation. His experience will be key in neutralising Pyramids' threat and maintaining the club's excellent defensive record.

Iqraam Rayners
Since his arrival from Stellenbosch FC, Rayners has made an immediate impact, notching 21 goals in 42 appearances across all competitions. Three of those goals have come in the Champions League, and with 14 goals in the latter part of the domestic campaign, the striker enters the final in red-hot form. His movement, clinical finishing, and ability to find space in the box could provide Sundowns with the edge they need in the final third.

Lucas Ribeiro Costa
The Brazilian playmaker has grown immensely this season, establishing himself as a central figure in the Sundowns attack. Equally adept at creating and finishing chances, Ribeiro Costa offers flair, unpredictability, and a proven goal threat. With two goals and one assist in the tournament, and the Betway Premiership Golden Boot already in hand, he is likely to be one of the most watched players on the pitch. His influence could be decisive if the Brazilians are to take a meaningful advantage to Cairo for the return leg.

Fun facts about the Comrades Marathon
DURBAN - More than 22,000 runners will line up in Pietermaritzburg to take on the 98th edition of the Comrades Marathon on Sunday. This year's race will be a down run from Pietermaritzburg City Hall to Durban. Here are some fascinating facts that capture the spirit and history of the race. Founded in 1921 by World War I veteran Vic Clapham, the Comrades Marathon was created to honour South African soldiers who died during the war. The first race saw 34 starters, with only 16 finishing, laying the foundation for a global sporting legacy. Recognised as the largest and oldest ultramarathon, the Comrades covers approximately 86–90 kilometres (depending on the route) between Durban and Pietermaritzburg. It draws elite athletes and amateurs from around the world. The race alternates direction each year: The 'up run' starts in Durban and ends in Pietermaritzburg, while the 'down run' reverses the route. Each direction presents unique challenges, with the up run featuring more climbs and the down run known for punishing descents. In 2022, Tete Dijana set the men's down run record with a time of 5:13:58, while Gerda Steyn holds the women's down run record at 5:44:54, also set in 2022. These times reflect an astonishing pace for nearly 90 km. Wally Hayward, a five-time winner, became the oldest finisher in 1989 at age 80, completing the race 58 years after his first victory in 1930. His enduring legacy inspires runners of all ages. The Comrades is steeped in tradition, starting with a gunshot and the playing of Chariots of Fire and Sweet Caroline. Another unique ritual is the exchange of a greeting letter between the mayors of Durban and Pietermaritzburg at the finish. The Comrades Marathon House in Pietermaritzburg houses a museum showcasing medals, memorabilia, photographs, and a detailed route model, offering fans a deep dive into the race's history.

Kaizer Chiefs set to snatch rising star Ime Okon from rivals
Kaizer Chiefs are reportedly closing in on a major signing ahead of the 2025/2026 season, with highly-rated defender Ime Okon believed to be on the brink of joining the Soweto giants. The 21-year-old's contract with SuperSport United ends this month, allowing him to leave as a free agent, and Chiefs have wasted no time in making their move. After lifting the Nedbank Cup, Amakhosi are determined to build a squad capable of challenging on all fronts under incoming coach Nasreddine Nabi. Okon, who has drawn attention with his physical presence and calmness on the ball, is understood to be a key piece in that puzzle. 'They (Kaizer Chiefs) see him (Ime Okon) as a long-term solution at centre-back. I mean, he is only 21 and he could challenge (Inacio) Miguel, who is almost 30, for that position. On top of that, his contract expires soon,' a source told The South African . Okon previously caught the eye of scouts abroad, having attended trials with Danish top-tier side FC Midtjylland and Ukrainian giants Dynamo Kyiv over the past 18 months. Despite impressing, no deal came to fruition, and he returned to see out his contract with Matsatsantsa. This presented Chiefs with a golden opportunity, and they appear poised to capitalise. Okon recently featured for Bafana Bafana in the COSAFA Cup. Which further strengthens his reputation as one of South Africa's most promising young centre-backs. His potential, youth, and international exposure make him an attractive prospect for a club eager to rebuild and restore glory. With negotiations believed to be at an advanced stage. And it looks increasingly likely that Okon will don the black and gold of Amakhosi next season. Will Okon be good enough to wear the Kaizer Chiefs jersey? Mamelodi Sundowns look set to part ways with two 'new' players in the coming days. Mamelodi Sundowns had an option to purchase him however reports suggest the club have passed on it. Furthermore, midfielder Kobamelo Kodisang will also reportedly be offloaded by the club. The winger is only one-year into his five-year contract at the club however coach Miguel Cardoso has deemed him surplus to requirements at Mamelodi Sundowns. 'There are off the field issues that the club has tried to deal with away from the public and that's why you didn't see him making the team towards the end of last season. From what I have been told, it looks like there's no way back for him and he will definitely leave Mamelodi Sundowns,' an insider told Citizen regarding Kodisang.
