KUALA LUMPUR : The High Court has allowed the Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) another month to review and decide on representations made by Najib Razak in connection with his RM27 million SRC International Sdn Bhd money laundering case.
Justice K Muniandy allowed the extension at case management today following an oral application by deputy public prosecutor Ashrof Adrin Kamarul.
'The intention is to provide a decision by next month but I'm not at liberty to say if it is negative or positive,' he said.
Meanwhile, senior counsel Shafee Abdullah who represented the former prime minister asked the court to grant Najib a discharge not amounting to acquittal (DNAA).
He said the matter had been hanging for far too long.
'We put in the representations as early as July 31, 2023.
'The representations, in terms of facts, have not changed. It's the same representations for which we have not received any reply from the AGC.
'In view of the fact that it is going to be two years since the representations were submitted, may I formally ask Yang Arif if you would grant a DNAA on this matter.
'We are only asking for a DNAA, if they (prosecution) want to reignite the case they can always do that,' he said.
Ashrof said the prosecution would leave the matter to the discretion of the court.
Muniandy then fixed a case management on June 11 and ordered Najib to be present on that day. The prosecution was also asked to be prepared to make submissions on the defence's DNAA application.
Najib, 71, is asking for the three money laundering charges, brought against him in February 2019, to be withdrawn.
In a later case which began on April 3, 2019, Najib was slapped with seven charges of abuse of power, money laundering and criminal breach of trust involving RM42 million in SRC International funds.
On July 28, 2020, the High Court convicted the former prime minister of all seven charges. His appeal to the Court of Appeal was dismissed on Dec 8, 2021 and the Federal Court on Aug 23, 2022.
He is currently serving a reduced six-year prison term after receiving a partial pardon in January last year.

Hailing from Debak, Gilberd, who is Bukit Aman Logistics and Technology Department (JLog) Deputy Director Technical/Operations, takes over from Datuk Seri Sahabudin Abd Manan, who retired after 37 years of service in the force. The handing-over-of-duty ceremony was held at the Tan Sri Abdul Rahman Hasim Hall, Kuala Lumpur Police Training Centre (Pulapol) today and was witnessed by Deputy Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay. Ayob Khan, in his speech, described Sahabudin, who led JLog with commitment and integrity for almost four years since July 5, 2021, as a highly credible person. 'Throughout his 37 years of service, he has held various strategic positions at the contingent and department levels, namely the Kedah and Penang contingents, the Department of Internal Security and Public Order (KDNKA) and the Logistics Department. 'The effectiveness of his leadership also enabled various initiatives by other departments to be realised towards improving the force's service delivery inclusively,' he was quoted as saying by Bernama. Ayob Khan said that among JLog's proud achievements under Sahabudin's leadership was the development of the SMART Lockup system, which won the Asia Pacific Enterprise Innovation Award 2015. It was developed in collaboration with Mosti and Mimos. Another is the installation of permanent electricity in Bukit Tagasan, Semporna, welfare projects such as the Aksem Quarters in Padang Besar, as well as the empowerment of the Bomb Disposal Unit, which successfully dealt with high-calibre explosives. Meanwhile, Sahabudin, in his speech, said he was grateful to be able to end his career in a meaningful way and apologised for any shortcomings during his period of service. 'I gave everything. I did my best. But of course, sometimes my best wasn't good enough,' he said emotionally. He said JLog's leadership requires a collective approach and wisdom in making strategic decisions. Sahabudin, born in Terengganu, began his career as an ASP Cadet Officer on June 5, 1988, and graduated with a Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of the Pacific, United States. ayob khan bukit aman Gilberd Philip Layang handing over lead Sahabudin

In a Facebook post, Anwar described Harimau Malaya's performance during last night's match as the beginning of a stronger comeback. "Congratulations, Harimau Malaya. Let yesterday's victory be the start of a more glorious comeback," he said. Meanwhile, Bernama reported that the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) expressed its gratitude to Anwar and the Malaysian government for their full assistance and support, which contributed to Harimau Malaya's resounding 4-0 victory over Vietnam at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium. In a statement, FAM announced that apart from financial support through special allocations for Harimau Malaya, the government also facilitated the documentation process for new heritage players, enabling them to feature in the second Group F match of the 2027 AFC Asian Cup Final Qualifiers in Saudi Arabia. "It is hoped that the full support from the country's top leadership and fans will continue to inspire Harimau Malaya's performance in upcoming international matches, en route to becoming one of the giants of Asian football," the statement read. Mainstream media remains vital for tourism promotion, say industry leaders

KUANTAN: Mainstream media continues to play a pivotal role in promoting Malaysia's tourism sector by effectively reaching diverse audience demographics, according to Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA) president Nigel Wong. He noted that while digital platforms and social media have become dominant tools in tourism marketing, the role of traditional media including television, radio and print should not be underestimated, particularly in engaging older demographics and the business sector. 'Social media and mainstream media cater to different audiences, making them complementary when promoting various aspects of tourism to distinct demographic groups,' he told Bernama. Wong emphasised mainstream media's role as a foundational pillar for long-term tourism success, particularly in highlighting initiatives, programmes and products. Echoing Wong's views, Malaysian Association of Hotels Pahang Chapter chairman Charles B Peter said mainstream media remained relevant due to its engaging content, credible information and adherence to journalistic standards. 'We know that social media is very active nowadays, but mainstream media retains the unique advantage of providing accurate, accountable information. 'I believe that before airing any programme, mainstream media undergo proper editing, and the quality of its presentation remains more engaging compared to social media,' he said. Charles pointed out that the media's tourism role extends beyond destination promotion, serving as a platform to address industry concerns including infrastructure development, safety improvements and accessibility to national landmarks. Meanwhile, he called for enhanced collaboration between media agencies, local authorities (PBT) and tourism associations to showcase hidden-gem destinations while preserving their cultural heritage. 'I propose coordinated media familiarisation trips with tourism associations to identify and develop potential attractions,' he said, suggesting that this approach would better highlight regional history and local culture. Recognising the media's role and contributions to the nation's development, National Journalists' Day (HAWANA) is celebrated annually on May 29, and this year, the main event for the celebration will take place on June 14 at the Kuala Lumpur World Trade Centre (WTC KL) and will be opened by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Themed 'Journalism in the New Era: Embracing AI, Safeguarding Ethics', more than 1,000 media practitioners, locals and from abroad, are expected to attend the event organised by the Communications Ministry with the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) as the implementing agency.
