Nigeria: Group urges Ondo government to prioritise infrastructure, economic growth
The Ilaje Development Summit Group (IDSG) has urged Ondo state government to give priority to development of critical sectors for the sustainable development of the state.
The President of IDSD, Adesola Adebawo who made this call while congratulating Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa on his victory, stressed the need for infrastructural development, job creation and sustainable economic growth.
Adebawo said 'As we look forward, we are confident that Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa's administration will prioritize critical sectors such as infrastructure development, job creation, and sustainable economic growth.
'By harnessing the untapped human and natural resources across Ondo State, we believe we can make significant strides toward achieving economic prosperity not only for our state but for Nigeria as a whole.
'This victory is more than a political triumph; it represents a renewed promise of progress, prosperity, and inclusiveness for all citizens,' he said.
Adebawo appreciated the people of the state for their unwavering support to the governor, stating that electing the governor was a resounding affirmation of the values of justice, equity, and unity that the people of the state held together.
'This momentous achievement was made possible by the collective effort and resilience of the people across all 18 local government areas, who came out in significant numbers to cast their votes for progress, inclusivity, and positive change.
'Your faith in a brighter future has been the cornerstone of this victory, and we are sincerely grateful for the confidence you have placed in Aiyedatiwa to lead our beloved state into a new era of growth and sustainable development,' he said.
He also extended the appreciation to traditional rulers in the state for their invaluable support throughout the electioneering journey.
According to him, the strategic leadership, dedication, and commitment to the principles of fairness and equity of the All Progressives Congress ( APC) have significantly contributed to the victory.
The group's president acknowledged President Bola Tinubu's visionary leadership and commitment to justice which he said had paved wat in the party's success in the election.
'Your decision to endorse Aiyedatiwa as the party's gubernatorial candidate reflects your dedication to promoting inclusivity and equitable representation across Nigeria.
'This victory is a fulfillment of the aspirations of the Ilaje people and a testament to what can be achieved when leaders prioritize the collective good.
'We also recognize the contributions of the elders of Ondo State, whose wisdom, counsel, and advocacy have guided us throughout this journey,' he said.

Niger flood: Tinubu orders immediate repair of collapsed Mokwa bridge
President Bola Tinubu has directed the Federal Ministry of Works to begin immediate repairs of the collapsed Mokwa Bridge, which is a vital connection between northern and southern Nigeria. The bridge collapsed due to recent flooding that has severely impacted road networks and other bridges in Mokwa town. The Minister of State for Works, Barr. Bello Goronyo, announced this directive while leading a Federal Government delegation on a condolence visit to the Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State on Tuesday. He highlighted the importance of the Mokwa road to Nigeria's transportation system and assured that the ministry is dedicated to maintaining its functionality. 'We are here for two main reasons: first, to commiserate with the government and people of Niger State over this unfortunate incident that has resulted in loss of lives and properties; and second, to assess the extent of the damage to the bridge,' Goronyo said. President Tinubu has issued an immediate directive to repair the bridge, and CGC Construction Company, located near the site, has already been engaged to implement temporary measures to restore motorable access before full reconstruction begins. Additionally, Goronyo announced that a technical committee, under the leadership of Minister of Works Engr. David Umahi, has been assigned the task of identifying bridges across the country that have surpassed their lifespan. He mentioned that the committee's findings will soon be presented for appropriate action. During his visit to internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Mokwa, the minister urged well-meaning Nigerians and private organizations to provide support to victims in the form of food, shelter, and medical assistance. 'These people need urgent help. While the government is playing its part, we appeal to well meaning individuals and organizations to extend support,' he urged. The Deputy Governor of Niger State, Comrade Yakubu Garba, who had earlier received the Minister in Minna before proceeding to Mokwa, acknowledged the federal government's swift intervention. Garba highlighted the human-induced factors that contributed to the disaster, citing illegal construction on waterways. UAE expresses solidarity with Nigeria over flood victims
The UAE has expressed its solidarity with Nigeria over the victims of the floods that swept through the town of Mokwa in Niger State, northern Nigeria, killing dozens of people and causing extensive damage. In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed its sincere condolences to the families of the victims, the Nigerian government, and the friendly Nigerian people over this painful loss. Flash flooding earlier this week in central Nigeria killed more than 150 people, a local disaster response spokesman told AFP on Saturday, while displacing 3,000, levelling more than 250 homes and washing away two bridges. The sharp jump from the previous death toll of 115 came as bodies were recovered nearly 10 kilometres (6 miles) away from the town of Mokwa, the epicentre of the floods, Ibrahim Audu Husseini, a spokesman for the Niger State Emergency Management Agency, told AFP. As Husseini warned that the toll could still rise - with bodies being swept away down the powerful Niger River - President Bola Tinubu said that search-and-rescue operations were underway, with the disaster response being aided by security forces. Tinubu, in an overnight post on social media, added that "relief materials and temporary shelter assistance are being deployed without delay" in Mokwa, which was hit by torrential rains late on Wednesday through to early on Thursday. Buildings collapsed and roads were inundated in the town, which is located more than 350 kilometres (215 miles) by road from the capital Abuja, an AFP journalist in Mokwa observed on Friday. Emergency services and residents searched through the rubble as floodwaters flowed alongside. "Some bodies were recovered from the debris of collapsed homes," Husseini said, adding that his teams would need excavators to retrieve corpses. He said many were still missing, citing a family of 12 where only four members had been accounted for as of Friday.

$21.5bln loan request is Nigeria's external borrowing plan for 2024–2026, FG clarifies
The Federal Government has clarified that Tuesday's $21.5 billion communication by President Bola Tinubu to the National Assembly was a formal request for consideration and approval of the 2024–2026 External Borrowing Rolling Plan, which includes the State Governments. It explained that a borrowing plan does not amount to taking a $21.5 billion loan but only shows a plan of what can be borrowed and where the loans will come from for specific projects that are important to the Federal and State governments, including what will be borrowed by the Federal Government in 2025. Additionally, the Federal Government noted that the proposed Borrowing Rolling Plan is an essential component of the Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF), in accordance with both the Fiscal Responsibility Act 2007 and the Debt Management Office (DMO) Act 2003. According to Government, the Plan outlines the external borrowing framework for both the federal and sub-national governments over a three-year period, accompanied by five detailed appendices on the projects, terms and conditions, implementation period, etc. In a statement on Wednesday, Mohammed Manga, Director, Information and Public Relations in the Federal Ministry of Finance, said by adopting a structured, forward-looking approach, the plan facilitates comprehensive financial planning and avoids the inefficiencies of ad hoc or reactive borrowing practices. 'This strategic method enhances Nigeria's ability to implement effective fiscal policies and mobilize development resources. The borrowing plan does not equate to actual borrowing for the period. The actual borrowing for each year is contained in the annual budget. 'In 2025, the external borrowing component is US $1.23 billion, and it has not yet been drawn. This is planned for H2 2025. 'Also, the plan is for both Federal and several State governments across numerous geopolitical zones including Abia, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Kaduna, Lagos, Niger, Oyo, Sokoto, and Yobe States. 'Importantly, it should be noted that the Borrowing Rolling Plan does not equate to an automatic increase in the nation's debt burden. The nature of the rolling plan means that borrowings are split over the period of the projects. 'For example, a large proportion of projects in the 2024–2026 rolling plan have multi-year drawdowns of between 5 to 7 years, which are project-tied loans. These projects cut across critical sectors of the economy, including power grids and transmission lines, irrigation for improving food security, fibre optics network across the country, fighter jets for security, and rail and road infrastructure,' Manga stated. He informed that the majority of the proposed borrowing will be sourced from Nigeria's development partners, including the World Bank, African Development Bank, French Development Agency, European Investment Bank, JICA, China EximBank, and the Islamic Development Bank, as these institutions offer concessional financing with favourable terms and long repayment periods, thereby supporting Nigeria's development objectives sustainably. The government reiterated that the debt service-to-revenue ratio has started decreasing from its peak of over 90 percent in 2023, and it has ended the distortionary and inflationary ways and means. It highlighted that there are significant revenue expectations from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), and technology-enabled monitoring and collection of surpluses from Government Owned Enterprises (GOE) and revenue-generating ministries, departments, and agencies, including legacy outstanding dues. 'Having achieved a fair degree of macroeconomic stabilization, the overarching goal of the Federal Government is to pivot the economy onto a path of rapid, sustained, and inclusive economic growth. 'Achieving this vision requires substantial investment in critical sectors such as transportation, energy, infrastructure, and agriculture. These investments will lay the groundwork for long-term economic diversification and encourage private sector participation. 'Our debt strategy is therefore guided not solely by the size of our obligations, but by the utility, sustainability, and economic returns of the borrowing. Ensuring that all borrowed funds are efficiently utilized and directed toward growth-enhancing projects remains a top priority,' the Government further explained. Manga underlined that the government remains committed to keeping borrowing within manageable and sustainable limits in accordance with the DMO Debt Sustainability Framework.
