Man arrested after car ploughs into crowds of people at Liverpool victory parade
Merseyside Police said the suspect was white, British and from the Liverpool area.
The Prime Minister described 'appalling' scenes as witnesses described a people carrier ploughing into crowds of people who had been celebrating in the city centre.
NHS University Hospitals of Liverpool Group urged members of the public to refrain from calling to ask about loved ones after the incident because next of kin would be contacted.
The club said they were in contact with the force and would 'continue to offer our full support to the emergency services and local authorities who are dealing with this incident'.
Footage of the incident which was circulating online on Monday appeared to show the vehicle speed up as it veered into pedestrians on both sides of the street.
Officers surrounded the car very soon after, as witnesses attempted to stop the driver, who was eventually detained by police.
Emergency services were quickly at the scene and several casualties were seen being taken away by ambulances.
A large police cordon was put in place on Water Street and emergency vehicles could be seen lining the road.
A conscious man on a stretcher was seen being put into an ambulance and the paramedic told police he believed the Liverpool Royal Hospital may be overwhelmed.
Police officers lined the junction of Castle Street and Water Street and firefighters were also on scene.
A large blue tent was erected in Water Street, with two fire engines parked in front. An ambulance incident unit was parked nearby before driving away.
A police van and car blocked Water Street, and other police vehicles were parked along The Strand.
Emergency vehicles including ambulances were allowed out of the cordon.
Harry Rashid, 48, from Solihull, was at the parade with his wife and two young daughters when he witnessed the collision.
The scenes in Liverpool are appalling — my thoughts are with all those injured or affected.
I want to thank the police and emergency services for their swift and ongoing response to this shocking incident.
I'm being kept updated on developments and ask that we give the police…

'This grey people carrier just pulled up from the right and just rammed into all the people at the side of us.
He added: 'It was extremely fast. Initially, we just heard the pop, pop, pop of people just being knocked off the bonnet of a car.
Another witness, who was walking with a group of friends, said he saw a car 'speeding up' and hitting pedestrians.
The man, who gave his name as Mike Maddra, told PA news agency the 'car turned left, mounted pavement, come towards us and runs towards the buildings'.

Mr Maddra said he thought he saw two people being hit and added, 'it looked deliberate' and 'it has just ruined the day really'.
In a statement, Sir Keir Starmer said: 'The scenes in Liverpool are appalling — my thoughts are with all those injured or affected.'
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher wrote on X: 'Devastating end to the day… just pray everyone is ok', while ex-Reds striker Robbie Fowler posted: 'Heartbreaking news… absolutely sickened with what's happened here in Liverpool.'
The Premier League posted: 'Everyone at the Premier League is shocked by the appalling events in Liverpool this evening, and our heartfelt thoughts go out to all those injured and affected.'

Greta Thunberg attempts to reach Gaza despite Israel's chilling threat
Israel's defence chief has vowed to prevent an aid boat carrying Greta Thunberg and other activists from reaching the Gaza Strip. Israel Katz said Israel will not allow anyone to break its blockade of the Palestinian territory. He said: "To the anti- Semitic Greta and her fellow Hamas propagandists, I will say this clearly: You should turn back, because you will not make it to Gaza." Mr Katz added: "I have instructed the IDF to act so the hate flotilla does not reach the shores of Gaza - and to take any means necessary to that end." Greta, 22, is among 12 activists on the Madleen, a British-flagged boat operated by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition. The Swedish activist has previously denied anti-Semitism. She added: "We are a humanitarian aid ship." An attempt last month by Freedom Flotilla to reach Gaza failed after another vessel was attacked by two drones off Malta. Yesterday, 13 people were killed by Israeli fire near an aid station in Rafah, Gaza. Witnesses said the shooting occurred at 6am, when they were told the centre would open.

Migrants, lawyers, smuggling gangs and the French cash in – while Brits are left to foot the bill
Gloom service THE Left has preached for years about how mass migration benefits the cultural and economic vitality of our nation. But it seems the main people it enriches are human rights lawyers, hotel owners, criminal gangs and the French authorities. 1 Official figures lay bare the eye-watering cost of Britain's broken borders, funded directly from the wage packets of hard-working taxpayers. French police, given £480million of your cash to stop people-traffickers, stand and watch as more and more people climb aboard small boats to cross the Channel. — nearly 3,000 more than at the very end of the Tories' time in office — are currently housed in 210 hotels at a cost of £4.7million a day. And that isn't even anywhere near the extent of the burden on taxpayers, as there are even more migrants being put up in non-hotel accommodation. There's little chance of the illegals among them being booted out any time soon, either. Lawyers claiming £1million a week in taxpayer-funded legal aid to mount endless appeals will see to that. Labour won power after pledging to ' smash the gangs ' and 'end asylum hotels'. Yet illegal migrant numbers — and the bill — keep on soaring. Patience is wearing thin. Sir Keir Starmer must stop the boats, or lose the votes of millions who supported him only last year. An easy call PARENTS are finding it increasingly difficult to protect their children from risks posed by smartphones. One in four kids spends more than four hours a day online and many secretly use social media during lessons and in bed. Hull residents react to migrants living in iconic hotel So it is a welcome step for ministers to consider a daily two-hour limit for under-16s and a 10pm watershed. But what are they waiting for? They can start in schools by giving teachers clear guidance — and power — to ban phones in classrooms. Not much cop They could save millions if they stopped sending officers to arrest law-abiding citizens who post 'hurty' comments on social media.

Police win funding battle with Rachel Reeves after warning to cut services
POLICE chiefs have won their funding battle with the Chancellor to increase their budgets after warning of cuts to services, The Sun understands. Rachel Reeves will put forward a real-terms increase after they demanded a rise. 2 It came amid fears some crimes would have to be ignored — and after heated talks between the Chancellor and Home Secretary Yvette Cooper ahead of Wednesday's spending review. It also emerged last night that Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner has settled her spending plans amid fears of cuts to housing and council budgets. Meanwhile, the 10million pensioners who lost winter fuel payments last year will find out as early as today whether they will have it reinstated after a screeching policy U-turn. Pressure was put on Ms Reeves to up police funding as forces insisted they could hit breaking point over the early prisoner release scheme. Force leaders warned PM Sir Keir Starmer any settlement failing to address their inflation and pay pressures would leave them making 'stark choices' about investigations to pursue. Labour pledges, including halving knife crime, were also said to be in jeopardy without the extra funding. Cabinet minister Peter Kyle yesterday appeared to signal the boost was coming, telling the BBC: 'We expect the police to start embracing the change they need to do, to do their bit for change as well. "We are doing our bit. "You see a Chancellor that is striving to get investment to the key parts of our country that needs it the most.' The Tories accused Labour of 'splurging' on wasteful projects. When Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp was pushed on where he would cut, he said he would 'go further' on welfare. Rachel Reeves responds to new figures from the ONS which shows GDP increased by 0.7% between January and March 2
