Over 330 arrested in Gauteng during joint high-density operations
The Gauteng Traffic Police and Traffic Wardens, the SAPS and other law enforcement agencies arrested over 330 people in joint high-density operations across Gauteng on May 30 and June 1.
The CoE recorded 69 arrests in areas including Etwatwa, Tembisa, Benoni, Springs, Boksburg, Tokoza, Dunnotar, Norkem Park, Duduza, Primrose and Zonkizizwe. Among the arrests, 15 were for drinking and driving, 14 for drug possession and five for selling liquor without a licence.
The entities searched 944 individuals and 416 vehicles.
High-density operations in the CoT saw 96 arrests in areas including Mabopane, Akasia, Mamelodi, Sunnyside and Olievenhoutbosch.

In the Sedibeng Municipality, officers apprehended 80 people in operations in Sebokeng, Orange Farm, Evaton, Vanderbijlpark, Boipatong, and the Barrage.
Meanwhile, in the West Rand Municipality, 67 arrests were made in Mohlakeng and Westonaria as part of ongoing enforcement activities, including Operation Shanela.
The Department of Community Safety (DCS) commended law enforcement officials for their continued collaboration and commitment to making these arrests.
'Drinking and driving, public drinking, possession of drugs and dealing in drugs are a sore thorn that officials are continuously dealing with decisively,' said Gauteng DCS spokesperson Ofentse Morwane.

The Road Traffic Management Corporation urges young drivers to reduce speed, avoid drinking and driving, and maintain safe distances this Youth Month The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has urged young people to exercise extreme caution on South Africa's roads as the Youth Day long weekend and school winter holidays approach. In a road safety awareness drive launched this June, the RTMC is calling on youth to take active steps to protect their lives and those of others during a period historically marked by high road fatality rates. Over the past four years, road fatalities during June have averaged 1,044 deaths annually. Although fatalities decreased to 833 in June 2023, this figure climbed again to 923 in 2024. "Worryingly, trends show that young people aged 20 to 39 make up more than half of daily road crash fatalities in South Africa", the RTMC said in a statement. RTMC spokesperson, Simon Zwane, warns that "the most common type of crash relates to accidents with pedestrians, hit and run type of accidents and single vehicle overturn and head on collisions", trends they are working to change drastically.

The organisation said the latest attempt to seek early release is retraumatising for the victims' family and deeply offensive to the broader public, many of whom remain haunted by the brutality of the crime. Marius van der Westhuizen was convicted of the premeditated murders of his children, Bianca, 16, Marius Jr, 5, and Antoinette, 21 months, at their Brackenfell, Western Cape, home on July 28, 2006. He was sentenced to 24 years in prison and has applied for parole three times. His third attempt was briefly successful in June 2024, when the parole board cited his rehabilitation efforts and acceptance of responsibility. The decision sparked widespread public backlash and was overturned by the Correctional Supervision and Parole Review Board just weeks later. 'The fact that Van der Westhuizen is once again seeking legal leniency is disgraceful. He murdered three innocent children. The Department of Correctional Services confirmed that the parole board's original decision had been overturned in terms of Section 75(8) of the Correctional Services Act. Van der Westhuizen remains incarcerated at Malmesbury Prison. Minister of Correctional Services Pieter Groenewald also supported the decision to revoke parole, saying it highlights the urgent need to review the parole system. 'Reforming our parole system is not just a policy issue, but a moral imperative. We must ensure that it protects the most vulnerable and does not re-victimise those already harmed,' he said. Action Society has reiterated its call for justice and urged the Department of Correctional Services to reject any further attempts by Van der Westhuizen to gain early release. 'This is not just an administrative issue — it is about upholding the value of life and protecting those who cannot protect themselves,' said Palm. 'We owe it to the victims to ensure that justice is not eroded by leniency.'

Hive of activities set for Youth Day
SHARPEVILLE.- There will be a hive of activities all over the country when South Africa commemorates Youth Day on June 16. Annually, there are activities taking place all over the country to celebrate the 1976 heroes, including a schoolboy, Hector Peterson, who was shot and killed at the age of 12 during the Soweto uprising. In the Vaal, a hive of activities is taking place at various venues. There will be the 1st Annual Netball Games taking place at George Thabe Stadium from June 14-16 under the theme 'Say no to killing women and children'. These games are organised by community activist Themba Zwelibanzi, who is also behind the 'Don't Do Crime' Games in Sedibeng. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, Zwelibanzi said the day's programme starts at 10:00 until late in the afternoon with entertainment in the form of music and dance. The netball teams that will be part of this commemoration are Avalon Netball Club, Steelpark Netball Club, Cheetahs Netball Club, Shooting Stars Netball Club, Vaal Gardens Sports Academy Netball Club, Diphetogo Netball Club, Tsoelopele Netball Club, Blue Sky Netball Club, Fighters Netball Club, and The Flames Netball Club. Zwelibanzi confirmed with Sedibeng Ster Sport that the fun-filled day is expected to provide action galore. 'We invite the community, young and old, to come in numbers to support this initiative. It is important for everyone, especially community members, to bring their camp chairs to enjoy the activities with us. I can't wait for the day to come because it is going to be lots of fun.'
