FIFA chief urges England to bid to host World Cup for the first time since 1966 after 2018 effort - fronted by Prince William and David Beckham - fell flat on its face
A leading FIFA official has called for England to host the World Cup for the first time since their home success in 1966.
The tournament in 1966 - which is now 59 years ago - represents the nation's only World Cup triumph after they beat West Germany 4-2 at Wembley courtesy of a Sir Geoff Hurst hat-trick.
FIFA vice-president Victor Montagliani - who runs football in north and central America, as well as the Caribbean in his role as president of the Concacaf - suggested England should be encouraged to throw their hat into the ring to host the tournament again.
In 2010, England bid to host the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, which were awarded to Russia and Qatar respectively. After European nations were effectively disqualified from hosting 2022, they instead focused on 2018.
But England - whose bid was fronted by the likes of Prince William and David Beckham - received just two out of 22 votes from the FIFA executive committee in the first round of voting in a process mired in a corruption scandal.
Montagliani has said the FA should try to play hosts again, with the United Kingdom as a whole apparently an ideal place for the global showpiece to be held.
1966 represented England's only win in a men's World Cup, with them beating West Germany 4-2 in the final
'I can't see why, not just England but the United Kingdom shouldn't be hosting the World Cup,' the official told The Times. 'I think it would be a fantastic World Cup and I think they should seriously think of putting their foot forward to host.
'We all know what the game means in the UK and I think it's time.'
The upcoming World Cups will be held in five different continents. 2026 will take place in the United States, Canada and Mexico, with Portugal, Spain and Morocco to play hosts four years later. Anniversary matches will also take place in Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay.
2034 has recently been awarded to Saudi Arabia in Asia. Recent bids were awarded without going through a vote on rival bids.
'I think the old way we used to do it where people just waste their money and then all these shenanigans happen - that's ridiculous,' Montagliani added. 'Let's get away from that.
'Let's become a proper business. Let's have an event management strategy so that we're properly rotating it, everybody gets a crack at it.
'The reality is that the World Cup generates 80 to 90 per cent of FIFA's income, which then sends 80 per cent of that back to its members for the development of football, and if FIFA doesn't generate that money there is a significant number of the 211 countries that do not have the funds to develop football.'
The UK will host the 2035 Women's World Cup, which could provide a launching pad for another bid to host the men's competition.

Inside Wayne Lineker's wild Ibiza beach club visited by Arne Slot and England stars including Bellingham and Grealish
Wayne is planning to open another O Beach in the Middle East WAYNE MANOR Inside Wayne Lineker's wild Ibiza beach club visited by Arne Slot and England stars including Bellingham and Grealish Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) WAYNE Lineker's iconic Ibiza bar is the go-to bar for footballers, Love Island favourites, and reality TV beauties. The O Beach Club offers the party to end all parties, with bikini-clad stunners dancing around the pool, bottles of £3,000 Dom Perignon popping from every table and an abundance of celebs joining in the mischief. There, the Real Madrid star Bellingham and his pals had one of the most expensive VIP areas to themselves and certainly made the most of it. But Liverpool manager Arne Slot started the trend this summer when he was spotted poolside just hours after hosting Arsenal at Anfield. While in the past, England footballers including Jack Grealish, Declan Rice, Ivan Toney and James Maddison have all hired their own cabana for some poolside fun. It's why the O Beach Club is the jewel of Lineker's £30million nightclub empire. Established 2012 Well before the O Beach Club, the Match of the Day legend's sibling launched Lineker's in Tenerife in 1988. Following its success, he continued to populate Spain's holiday destinations with several sports bars. It netted him a fortune - and during the 1998 World Cup punters were seen queuing in the streets of Puerto Banus desperate to watch the games. In 2012, Lineker launched his new venture - originally called the Ocean Beach Club. 12 Birds eye view of O Beach in San Antonio Credit: Alamy Nestled in bustling San Antonio, it soon became one of the White Isle's most popular hotspots. Offering acrobatics, live saxophonists, DJs and dancers, and with the likes of Hedkandi, Kisstory and HotBed hosting regular events there. Footballers cottoned on too. Euro 2012 Days after England crashed out of Euro 2012 following a heartbreaking penalty shootout to Italy, a number of Three Lions jetted away for a well-needed break. This summer, though, the venue welcomed a £100million footballer through its doors. Grealish Just a month after Lineker rang in his 60th birthday with an epic party where he was joined by ex-girlfriend Chloe Ferry and showbiz pal Calum Best, Grealish came for a jolly. Fresh from picking up his first ever Premier League winners medal, the midfielder was ready for a good time. Jack, 29, was centre of attention, showing off his ripped six pack and famous calves in a pair of pink shorts plastered with palm trees, as he was surrounded by bikini-clad beauties. The Gucci ambassador used neon shades to push his famous locks back and covered his crimson neck with a white top, while having fun with a string of lads and beauties. TV star Chloe Chaloner, 28, who previously dated Callum Izzard, and Rhi Parsons joined him in a private area reserved for the rich and famous. Pool beds for eight people cost around £1,300 - and the minimum spend is over £1000. Grealish's gang were served up platters of fruit and mini burgers, as well as dozens of O Beach cocktails, and looked in good spirits enjoying the Ibiza sunshine. O Beach Club is taking over the Maldives in November for a four-day event. But his next target is the UAE - another haven for footballers in winter and summer. They were set to open at Palm Jumeirah last summer, but the project came to a 'standstill' over 'various contributing factors'. Regardless, plans are still afoot for a Dubai residence in the near future. No doubt Grealish's plans for some winter sun are already in place.

Man Utd forward reveals 'credible option' on table as loan transfer addressed
Man Utd forward reveals 'credible option' on table as loan transfer addressed The forward has been training with the Canadian national team after being invited on camp with Craig Bellamy and Wales Gabriele Biancheri of Manchester United (Image: Getty Images ) Burgeoning Manchester United talent Gabriele Biancheri finds himself on the brink of two career-defining decisions — at both club and international level. Currently in Canada's Gold Cup training camp as a non-playing invitee, the 18-year-old is considering a switch from Wales, the country he's represented at youth level, to Canada, where his mother was born. 'Canada is a credible option and one I am thinking about,' Biancheri told The Athletic. 'Right now, I'm just taking everything in.' Biancheri, who was born and raised in the Welsh capital and represented Cardiff City at youth level before moving to United, was invited to Wales' senior camp last month along with a number of the country's bright young talents. It comes after a fruitful season for the teenager, who scored 21 goals across the U18 Premier League and Premier League 2 and regularly participated in first-team training. A broken hand midway through the season didn't stop his momentum, and he's now weighing whether to stay and fight for minutes at United or go on loan. Article continues below 'I don't really know the plan for next season,' Biancheri said, admitting a loan out of Manchester United's youth set-up to play first- team football is an option being considered. 'I just take everything as it comes. If that's going on loan and learning and getting experience playing men's football, I'll take it. If that's getting a chance with the first team and playing Under-21s and earning my shot, that's what I'll do.' There's clearly a queue forming in front of him at United, with Rasmus Hojlund, Joshua Zirkzee, Chido Obi and a returning Marcus Rashford currently ahead of him in the pecking order. That's not to mention the links with Sporting CP striker Victor Gyokeres. However, an ambition to burst into the United first team at some point is clearly burning within him. 'That's why I play football: to play at the highest level, to play for Man United's first team,' Biancheri added. 'I'll always push myself to reach the heights I know I can. Playing for United's first team is a dream, but I know I can make it happen.' Now, as Canada prepare for the 2026 World Cup on home soil, he's drawn to the chance of international football with a promising, youthful squad. 'There's pride in wearing the shirt,' Biancheri said. 'It's not just football — it has to come from the heart.' Bellamy, on the other hand, insisted he had a relaxed stance on the talented teenager exploring his options in North America and believes he will make the best decision for him. "I like people having options, it's healthy," Bellamy said last week. "He's not ready for our squad yet. It's something he'd like to go and have a look at, but I like to think we have done our work as well. Article continues below "He has been with us through the younger age groups, he knows what we are about and who we are. "I don't think it ever hurts someone to have options and to go and explore them. I'm never against that. At the end the decision will be his. He knows where we are and where he is. He's not ready for first team football with us at this moment. "It's his decision. I've known him since he was very young and I know his family really well. Whatever he does will be the right thing for him, it's not a problem."

Alexis Mac Allister calls out Jack Grealish antics - 'You feel like kicking him'
Jack Grealish has picked up a reputation as a player who goes to ground easily, with Roy Keane once comparing him to Olympic diver Tom Daley, and Alexis Mac Allister has claimed players "feel like kicking him" Liverpool star Alexis Mac Allister has named Manchester City 's Jack Grealish as the biggest provocateur in the Premier League, admitting players "feel like kicking him". Grealish has been accused of going to ground too easily during more than two decades in the top flight. The England winger has entertained fans with his flamboyant style of play and ability to run at defenders down the flank. But Mac Allister has been irked by Grealish on the pitch after being asked which player in the Premier League winds him up the most. He also suggested the 29-year-old often made the most of being fouled, having first faced off against him when he was a Brighton player and Grealish turned out for Villa. "Grealish - you feel like kicking him," the Argentine said. "But even when you do, he gets right back up. And somehow, that makes you feel like you're winning!" READ MORE: Jack Grealish AXED from Man City squad as Pep Guardiola points England star to exit door READ MORE: Florian Wirtz leaves Liverpool fans all saying the same thing as Bruno Fernandes fumes In 2023, Grealish was compared to Olympic diving star Tom Daley after winning a penalty for City against his former club Villa - but defended the player for being "smart". "Yeah, you have to give a penalty, it's just Jack being very smart," Keane told Sky Sports. "We're saying Jack is more like Tom Daley, but I think it is a penalty, and it's clever from Jack. He gets his body across and like Gary [Neville] said in commentary, he knows exactly what he's doing, gave the referee almost no option but to give the penalty." Mac Allister's comments come at a difficult time for Grealish, who was left out of Manchester City's Club World Cup squad headed to the United States this summer. Grealish has fallen down the pecking order under boss Pep Guardiola at the Etihad in the last two seasons since playing a pivotal role in City's historic treble triumph in 2023. The £100m signing started just 16 games in all competitions last season and only seven times in the Premier League as he scored three goals across the board. He is now being tipped for an exit from City after his brutal axe as he looks to regain his place in the England squad ahead of the 2026 World Cup. However, a move could be hard to pull off for most clubs due to Grealish's British-record transfer fee plus his eye-watering wages of £300,000-a-week, which means a loan deal might be his best option of getting game time.
