World number one Aryna Sabalenka ended Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen's winning streak on the Paris clay with a straight-sets victory on Tuesday to seal herself a spot in the French Open semifinals.
Sabalenka next faces three-time defending champion Iga Swiatek of Poland who posted a straight-sets victory over 13th seed Elina Svitolina.
The top seed from Belarus won through 7-6 (7/3), 6-3 against the Chinese eighth seed in just under two hours on Court Philippe Chatrier.
The 27-year-old fought back after struggling in the first set against Zheng, who had beaten her in the last eight on clay in Rome last month, extending her record against the Chinese player to 7-1.
"The last tournament I was pretty exhausted," said Sabalenka.
"Today I was more fresh I was ready to battle, to fight and give everything.
"Honestly, I was actually glad that I lost that match because I needed a little break before Roland Garros."
Zheng broke and led 4-2 in the first set. But numerous unforced errors – 31 in total – allowed the Belarusian to come back.
The second set was also tight before Sabalenka broke back to lead 4-3, taking advantage of her opponent's errors.
Sabalenka converted her first match point on a poorly-controlled drop-shot from Zheng to reach her seventh semifinal of the season.
In another quarterfinal, Swiatek bested the former world number three Svitolina of Ukraine 6-1, 7-5 in just over 90 minutes to continue her bid to equal a 102-year record by winning four successive French Open titles. (AFP)

According to tournament rules, only the top two in each six-team group advance directly to the World Cup – while the third and fourth-placed teams enter the playoffs. With two matches remaining, Indonesia sits fourth in Group C with nine points while China is level with Bahrain at the bottom on six points. On a humid Jakarta night in front of a raucous crowd – and an energetic Indonesian side bolstered by naturalised talent – the pressure awaiting China is immense. "The first step to reaching the playoffs is winning this match. This demands that we play attacking football, with every player giving their all in running and effort," said head coach Branko Ivankovic, who expressed confidence that his players could transform pressure into motivation. Ivankovic will have to contend with key absences – striker Wu Lei is sidelined with injury, while attacking midfielders Lin Liangming and Xie Wenneng are suspended. As a result, Zhang Yuning and Wei Shihao will bear much of the attacking burden. Fans will be eager to see 18-year-old Wang Yudong, who has impressed in the Chinese Super League, potentially earn his first national team start. Bomb squad technicians defused the three American explosives, two weighing 1,000kg and one 500kg, at 7:19pm (1719 GMT) on Wednesday, having earlier set up an evacuation zone of about 10,000 square metres for 12 hours. Road and train lines were closed throughout the day, and city officials went door to door, vacating about 20,000 people from their homes and closing 58 hotels as well as numerous restaurants and businesses. The heart of the city was left deserted, with a hospital, two old people's homes, nine schools and a TV studio evacuated. Weddings had to be relocated from Cologne's town hall, and a man was taken into custody after trying to break through a barrier and enter the zone, local authorities said. The bombs had been found during building work on Monday in the Deutz area on the east bank of the River Rhine. German construction sites have regularly unearthed unexploded World War II ordnance. In Frankfurt, the discovery of a 1.4-tonne bomb in 2017 led to the removal of 65,000 people, the biggest such evacuation in Europe since 1945. In 2021, four people were injured when a World War II bomb exploded at a building site near Munich's main railway station, scattering debris over hundreds of metres. (AFP)

Photo: AFP Next year's NBA All-Star Game will feature a "USA versus the World" format, NBA commissioner Adam Silver confirmed. The move comes after last February's revamped tournament-style format with celebrity-picked rosters was seen as a flop by players and drew relatively low US television ratings. Asked on Fox Sports One about having a USA against the World format for the elite-level contest, the first word out of Silver's mouth was "yes." "Next year, as part of our new media deal, the All-Star Game returns to NBC and it so happens that next season will be smack in the middle of the Winter Olympics," Silver said. "So the game will be on NBC and the very day we're on, the lead-in will be Winter Olympic events and coming out of the All-Star Game – which is now going to be in the afternoon instead of the evening – there will be more Olympic events. "So what better time to feature some form of USA against the world?" Such an All-Star format offers the prospect of Canada's Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, this season's NBA Most Valuable Player from Oklahoma City, going against American Tyrese Haliburton of NBA Finals rival Indiana. It could offer LeBron James, Kevin Durant and Stephen Curry as US teammates against such global stars as Giannis Antetokounmpo, Nikola Jokic and Victor Wembanyama. Silver said while no format was set, the NBA looked at the success of the NHL's Four-Nations Face-Off last February, which gained great attention for a USA-Canada rivalry. "I'm not exactly sure what the format will be yet," Silver said. "Obviously paid a lot of attention to what the NHL did, which was a huge success."
