Springfield Police sees trend in pedestrian fatalities
SPRINGFIELD, Mo — The Springfield Police Department pushes drivers and pedestrians to be cautious following multiple instances of pedestrians being hit and killed by vehicles.
In a release, SPD says there have already been four pedestrian fatalities so far in 2025. They all have something in common: those who have been hit were trying to cross the street outside of designated crosswalk areas.
Now, police are reminding people the safest place to cross the street is at a crosswalk, signal or intersection. SPD is also urging those who travel on foot to remember an acronym that could help them avoid being injured or killed – telling the to use their 'WITS':

Police are also encouraging people to be aware of traffic laws per city ordinances such as the Pedestrian Safety Ordinance, as well as the following:

'The tragic fatalities this year are a sobering reminder of how important it is for pedestrians to follow safe street-crossing practices,' said Sgt. Ben Haines, supervisor of SPD's Traffic Unit. 'Pedestrian safety is about being informed and cautious, and we encourage everyone to follow the laws designed to keep them safe. Our goal is to ensure that both pedestrians and drivers can safely share the road.'
Springfield Police have been putting a greater emphasis on pedestrian safety in the past few years with initiatives like the 'SGF Yields' program, which kicked off in 2017. In 2024, City Council implemented the 'Safer Streets SGF Plan', using the 'Vision Zero' safety strategy. The City of Springfield wants to eliminate traffic fatalities by 2040, and disabling injury crashes by 2050.

Seattle police disperse 'ICE OUT' protesters after fire breaks out downtown

Seattle firefighters extinguished the fire after officers moved out protestors. SPD claims protesters were shining lasers at officers, and throwing rocks and bottles at them. The protest started at Cal Anderson Park around 7 p.m. and moved through downtown to the federal building, blocking off several streets. Some were holding signs and flags, with one window nearby tagged with the words "abolish ICE now." Protesters were also heard chanting and banging on trash cans in the area. The "ICE OUT" protest is in opposition of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and the increase in detainments and deportations under the Trump administration. A similar protest took place Tuesday at the Seattle Federal Building at 1st and Madison, where demonstrators briefly clashed with Seattle police after a vehicle exited the building. Missing 24-year-old woman found ‘safe,' police say
A previously missing 24-year-old woman has been found. Victim from 7-vehicle crash in South Sacramento identified
( — The Sacramento County Coroner's Office released the name of the victim who died on June 7 after being involved in a 7-vehicle crash that was caused by a man who fled from police on June 1 after a domestic call. The victim was identified as a 30-year-old Huynh Huu Duc Nguyen, from Elk Grove. According to the Sacramento Police Department, on June 1, officers received a report of domestic violence in the 7300 block of Farm Dale Way. The suspect was identified as Daniel Cunningham, 33, of Sacramento, who left before officers arrived at the scene. At around 10:15 a.m. on June 7, SPD stated that officers were called back to the residence for a request for a civil standby. The victim from June 1, who police said was assaulted by Cunningham, called and requested assistance to gather her stuff from the home. Suspect named in a police pursuit that was linked to a domestic violence incident 'This suspect had a fresh domestic violence want for his arrest,' said an SPD Officer Anthony Gamble. 'He was also a parolee at large, and so our officers had an obligation to bring this person to justice.' The vehicle traveled westbound on Florin Road and ultimately crashed into seven vehicles at the intersection of Florin Road and Greenhaven Drive in South Sacramento, SPD said. Nguyen was in one of the vehicles that was struck by Cunningham was pronounced dead at the scene by fire personnel. SPD stated that Cunningham fled from the vehicle on foot but was arrested by officers and a K9. He was then taken to a local hospital for medical treatment and has been cleared for incarceration. Cunningham has been booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail on charges related to parole violation, domestic violence, and felony pursuit charges, according to SPD. SPD then reached out to CHP and requested its Major Accident Investigation Team to conduct a collision investigation to determine if there would be more charges added relating to the crash.
