Scouting Florida, Maryland ahead of 2025 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament Sweet 16 matchup
The top-seeded Florida Gators' success so far in the 2025 NCAA Tournament has earned the program its first trip to the Sweet 16 since 2017. It took a blowout win that left a bit to be desired over the 16th-seeded Norfolk State Spartans in the first round and a white-knuckle comeback victory over the two-time defending national champions, the UConn Huskies, in the round of 32 to get back to this promised land.
But the work is far from over with four games left before the Orange and Blue can hoist the championship banner back inside the O'Connell Center. First, Todd Golden's gang has to get past the fourth-seeded Maryland Terrapins who finished tied for second with the Michigan Wolverines in the Big Ten during the regular season and behind the Michigan State Spartans.
It certainly does not get easier but the Gators are the hottest team in the nation right now and are up for the challenge. With a few days remaining before the next battle, CBS Sports writer Cameron Salerno scouted each team in the Sweet 16, including Florida and Maryland, and had the following to offer.
CBS Sports scouting report for Florida
"Florida rolls into the West Regional as the team to beat. The Gators withstood a heavyweight fight against two-time reigning national champion UConn to advance to the Sweet 16. Florida's offense starts and stops with All-American Walter Clayton Jr., who is arguably the best guard in the country," Salerno begins.
"Florida can overwhelm teams with its size down low and has the perfect blend of depth and star power to make a deep run. Florida ranks No. 1 in adjusted offensive efficiency and 10th in adjusted defensive efficiency, per KenPom. The Gators don't have many weaknesses."
CBS Sports scouting report for Maryland
"Maryland has one of the most talented starting lineups in this country. It starts with star big man Derik Queen, a projected first-round pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. Queen and fellow frontcourt mate Julian Reese — the brother of former LSU star Angel Reese — are a dynamic duo with each capable of finishing with a double-double every night," Salerno notes.
"You can't forget about the guard play on this team, either. Ja'Kobi Gillespie (14.7 points per game), Rodney Rice (13.8) and Selton Miguel (12.0) all average double-digit points. Maryland did finish ranked No. 314 in bench minutes, and part of that is because the starting lineup is that good."
How to watch Florida-Maryland in Sweet 16
The Gators will take on the Terrapins on Thursday, March 27, in the NCAA Tournament's Sweet 16. Tipoff at the Chase Center in San Francisco is scheduled for 7:39 p.m. ET and the game will be broadcast nationally on TBS.

Oregon Football's Kenyon Sadiq pegged as breakout NFL draft riser for 2025

Oregon Football's Kenyon Sadiq pegged as breakout NFL draft riser for 2025 In 2025, all signs point towards Kenyon Sadiq becoming a household name for the Oregon Ducks. With his talent, Sadiq would have been most anyone else's starting tight end for the past two seasons, but he had to play a backup role to Terrance Ferguson. Now it's his time to shine. Sadiq is one of the more experienced receivers on the Duck roster this coming season, and he's expected to have a breakout season in 2025. As a result, with his size, NFL scouts should have a field day rating him. Sadiq will be a hot commodity when the NFL draft rolls around. According to USA TODAY writer Michael Middlehurst-Schwartz, Sadiq could go high in the 2026 NFL selection process. "With second-round tight end Terrence Ferguson and top receivers Tez Johnson and Traeshon Holden off to the NFL, the Ducks are set for a reconfiguration in their receiving corps," he said. "Big things are expected of Evan Stewart as the former five-star recruit enters his second season in Eugene after transferring from Texas A&M, but Sadiq might be the true wild card for the offense. "At 6-3 and 245 pounds, he's a more formidable run blocker than his size might suggest. His true value, however, lies in his ability to create mismatches as a supersized receiver with impressive long speed. Sadiq will have to show he can handle being a featured part of the Ducks' offense and develop into something more than a seam threat, but he's one of the most intriguing draft-eligible tight ends to keep an eye on." The Oregon offense isn't expected to change a whole lot with quarterback Dante Moore under center, but just because of Sadiq's pure talent, the Ducks might go to him more, especially in the red zone and goal-line situations. He showed what he can do in those situations in the Big Ten title game, as he scored two touchdowns in the win over Penn State. Oregon fans have said, "More of that, please," and the Ducks are about to oblige. Ohio State football legend passes away at age 87

Ohio State football legend passes away at age 87 An Ohio State football legend has passed away. Former Buckeye and Minnesota Vikings defensive end Jim Marshall died at the age of 87 on Tuesday. He played under Woody Hayes in 1957 and 1958, helping lead the team to a national championship in 1957. He was a two-time All-Big Ten performer and was recognized as a third-team All-American in 1958. His Ohio State career was awfully good, but it was the NFL where he really shined. Marshall began his professional career in the Canadian Football League with the Saskatchewan Roughriders, but was eventually traded to the Cleveland Browns in a rare CFL/NFL swap. He played one year in Cleveland before being traded to the Minnesota Vikings as part of the 1962 NFL expansion. He became a perennial star in the Twin Cities. During a very long 20-year career (the last 19 with the Vikings), Marshall made two Pro Bowls, was a captain 14 consecutive seasons, set the league record for consecutive games played at 270 (since broken by Brett Favre in 2008), and helped anchor the famed "Purple People Eaters" defensive line. He was an NFL champion in 1969, has been inducted into the Minnesota Ring of Honor, and also has his No. 70 retired in the Twin Cities. "The entire Minnesota Vikings organization is mourning the loss of Jim Marshall," Vikings owner Mark Wilf and their ownership group said in a statement. "No player in Vikings history lived the ideals of toughness, camaraderie, and passion more than the all-time iron man. A cornerstone of the franchise from the beginning, Captain Jim's unmatched durability and quiet leadership earned the respect of teammates and opponents throughout his 20-year career. Jim led by example, and there was no finer example for others to follow. His impact on the Vikings was felt long after he left the field. Jim will always be remembered as a tremendous player and person." Marshall was inducted into the Ohio State Athletics Hall of Fame in 1978. May he rest in peace.
