Do Bills Actually Need James Cook For Super Bowl Run?
Do Bills Actually Need James Cook For Super Bowl Run? originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Buffalo Bills running back James Cook has been one of the more consistent players at his position over the last few seasons. Advertisement He has recorded over 1,000 yards rushing in back-to-back years, and even led the league in touchdowns on the ground in 2024. Since being drafted in the second round by the Bills, Cook has shown to be a very serviceable star for their offense. Now comes the tricky part. Cook is entering the final year of his contract with the Bills and has sat out of offseason workouts as a way to push the team to negotiate. That has yet to happen. Cook's contract situation is complex. He has consistently pushed for a new deal that would pay him an average of $15 million since the offseason began. Buffalo, with under $5 million in cap space to their name, doesn't have that kind of money to give to a position of lesser value. Advertisement Buffalo has a strong collection of running backs behind Cook. Players like second-year runner Ray Davis, Ty Johnson, and Darrynton Evans all bring something unique to Buffalo's backfield. Add in the league MVP Josh Allen with his athleticism, and the Bills should still be able to compete for a Super Bowl even without Cook in for certain games and practices. That is the reality of the situation. While Cook is a very good running back, he doesn't have the kind of talent that a Christian McCaffrey or a Saquon Barkley have for their respective teams. And if a team doesn't have a player like Barkley or McCaffrey in the backfield, then they shouldn't re-sign their current runner to a lucrative deal. Advertisement It seems like that is exactly what Buffalo is arguing as well. Bills Watch As Keon Coleman 'Asks The Right Questions' Toward Maturity
Bills Watch As Keon Coleman 'Asks The Right Questions' Toward Maturity originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The life of an NFL rookie isn't always smooth, and Buffalo Bills receiver Keon Coleman found that out last season. Advertisement Injury and poor form led to an up-and-down year, which saw Keon post just 29 receptions for 556 yards and four touchdowns, but there were bright spots, just not enough of them. Now, as Keon enters his second season, off the back of some fire-starting comments from general manager Brandon Beane, he has been dialed in at OTAs, and offensive coordinator Joe Brady has noticed. "I am enjoying seeing him ask the questions he's asking, his approach, moving him around, and doing different things with him," Brady said via "Seeing what he can and can't do. Football is a physical sport, so once the pads come on, that's the biggest thing." Buffalo Bills wide receiver Keon Coleman (0).Gregory Fisher-Imagn Images The desire to improve is clear, and yes, we understand it's early in the offseason program, but Coleman is doing and saying all the right things in his pursuit of the improvement that will elevate his game to a new level in 2025. Advertisement With a group of receivers around him that will take the pressure of having to be "the" guy, Coleman can hopefully go about his business and develop into the weapon Buffalo hoped he would be when it drafted him. Granted, his stats last year were nothing to sneeze at, but given that he was a high draft pick, naturally, more is expected. And it seems that Coleman is determined to take his game to new heights in 2025 as a member of Brady's high-octane offense. Related: Do Bills Actually Need James Cook For Super Bowl Run? Who is on Ja'Marr Chase's "Mount Rushmore" as the best wide receivers in NFL history? And should he include himself next?
Who is on Ja'Marr Chase's "Mount Rushmore" as the best wide receivers in NFL history? And should he include himself next? originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase is coming off the best season of his career, and one of the best in NFL history for a receiver. Advertisement He achieved the historic "triple crown" by leading the entire NFL in receptions (127), receiving yards (1,708) and receiving touchdowns (17) last season. The milestone had only been achieved 16 times by 12 other players prior to Chase's unbelievable season in 2024. The last player to hit this feat before Chase was Los Angeles Rams wideout Cooper Kupp during the 2021 season. That year ended with the Rams beating Chase's Bengals in the Super Bowl. Prior to the 2023 season, Chase was asked by Sports Illustrated who he would put on his "Mount Rushmore" for wide receivers - or the best four players at the position in NFL history. Advertisement After starting with Calvin Johnson and Antonio Brown, Chase showed love to the recent triple crown winner at the time. "Got to put Kupp in there with the triple crown," Chase said. He added the cherry on top with Jerry Rice, an "obvious" pick for any all-time receivers list. Rice is another triple crown winner, leading the league in all three categories in 1990 with the San Francisco 49ers. Little did Chase know, he would be the next receiver to join this exclusive club just two years later. Now the question: would he update his list by putting himself in? One way to answer this is to compare his 2024 season with the two triple crowns he put in ahead of him. Advertisement Chase's season doesn't really come close to Kupp's (145 receptions, 1,947 yards, 16 touchdowns), but it holds weight head-to-head with Rice's. Ja'Marr had higher totals than Jerry in each statistic. Rice finished 1990 with 100 catches, 1,502 yards and 13 touchdowns. Rice, however, has the upper hand overall with three other seasons where he led the NFL in two of the three major categories. Chase had never led the league in any stat before last year. The easy answer is to sub himself in for either Johnson or Brown, but those are no slouches either. "Megatron" led the league in receptions and yards, but only had five touchdowns in 2012. Brown led in catches and yards two years later, but finished second in touchdowns by three. Advertisement Chase may have a ways to go before he enters the "Mount Rushmore" conversation for receivers, but with just four seasons under his belt and an elite quarterback throwing him the pigskin for years to come, Chase is on pace to have a solid argument for his inclusion by the time he retires.
