Grobbelaar eyes domestic success as route into Bok line-up after camp exclusion
Johan Grobbelaar missed the latest Springbok alignment camp along with other top hookers Joseph Dweba and André-Hugo Venter, who all featured in March.

Picture:As the search for a third-choice Springbok hooker widened with the inclusion of Wales-based Marnus van der Merwe in this month's Springbok alignment camp, and Jan-Hendrik Wessels' explosive form, Johan Grobbelaar has kept his mind on club rugby.
He sees it as his avenue back into the Springbok line-up while ignoring what could be interpreted as a snub at the camp.
The 27-year-old specialist hooker was once seen as the likely understudy to the increasingly injury-hit Malcolm Marx, 30, and the ageing Bongi Mbonambi, 33, particularly with an eye on the 2027 Rugby World Cup.
He only has three Test caps, though they came last season (against Australia, Portugal and Wales), and was among the 56 domestic players featuring in 2025's first Bok camp in March.
Joseph Dweba and André-Hugo Venter are also in the running for the hooker position and likewise missed the May camp after featuring two months earlier.
Grobbelaar focuses on his game
While some have seen the omission of certain players as a rejection, Bok boss Rassie Erasmus has always said exclusion does not mean players have fallen out of favour. Instead, their chances of selection for the Springboks are as strong as they were before.
When asked about it all on the eve of the alignment camp's player announcement, Grobbelaar turned attention to the domestic season, saying he was happy with his form. The hooker has secured five tries and contributed to the Bulls' forward pack dominance this season.
'All focus is with the Bulls and I want to play my best rugby for the club,' he said.
'We get through the play-offs and then the final – we tick those boxes then selectors will see you. It's important to give yourself the best chance of being selected for that squad as well.'
Bulls set to go all the way in the URC
The Bulls have been the most consistent South African team in the United Rugby Championship, twice reaching the final and once the quarter-final.
They have made mention of their desire to go all the way this time, first needing to beat Edinburgh in the quarter-final at Loftus next weekend. Victory there gives them a home semi-final against the winner between the Sharks and Munster on 7 June.
The final will either be played at Loftus or if it's against Leinster, away at Aviva Stadium.
The Bulls are on a four-game winning streak and finished the league phase of the URC with their most number of points (68) and most wins (14).

18 G\A Kaizer Chiefs transfer target says goodbye to teammates!
Kaizer Chiefs have prioritised the revitalisation of their attack in the coming transfer window, I order to improve their fortunes. Chiefs woes in front of goals lasts season were well documented, with coach Nasreddine Nabi not shying away from them. This, however, has not been a problem unique to just last season. Even during the tenure of former coach Arthur Zwane, they have been trying to find a solution. Since then, they have acquired players like Christian Saile, Caleb Bimenyimana, Ranga Chivaviro , Tashreeq Morris and Glody Lilepo. Yet there has been no solution to Chiefs ' struggles in the box. What had improved last season under Nabi, however, has been their chances created. That hasn't, however, seen them stop their pursuit of another player that can both score and produce assists. According to FARPost , Chiefs are interested in signing Sekhukhune United's Keletso Makgalwa. Furthermore, they believed the player has already said goodbye to his teammates at Babina Noko. 'Sekhukhune United have taken a firm stance on the future of their star winger, Keletso Makgalwa, amidst interest from Kaizer Chiefs coach Nasreddine Nabi. According to a Sekhukhune player, the former Mamelodi Sundowns attacker bid farewell to his Babina Noko teammates, sparking speculation about an imminent departure. However, sources within the Limpopo-based club have clarified that they intend to build their team around Makgalwa for the upcoming season. The 28-year-old player joined Sekhukhune on a three-year deal from Upington City FC after mutually parting ways with Sundowns.' Wrote the publication. Before last season, it was rumoured that Chiefs had signed Makgalwa, on an pre-contract from Upington FC. In the end, that proved not to be true, with the speedy winger going to register 11 goals and seven assists in the topflight. PSL transfer buzz: Long-term target ‘eager to join Kaizer Chiefs'!
Kaizer Chiefs coach Nasreddine Nabi travelled to Tanzania in a bid to lure long-term target Fesial Salum, a meeting that is said to have gone swimmingly for the former Young Africans manager. 'Nabi reportedly held a crucial meeting with Feisal Salum during his visit. This meeting confirms Nabi's continued keen interest in the dynamic midfielder, a player he has long admired,' a source said. 'Previous attempts to secure Salum's services hit a snag due to a significant disparity in valuation between the clubs involved. However, the recent meeting appears to have breathed new life into the potential transfer. ' 'Crucially, sources close to the player confirm he is highly receptive to the project and is eager to join Kaizer Chiefs next season.'. According to reports, Kaizer Chiefs are hoping to sign Mamelodi Sundowns striker Etiosa Ighodaro in the second time of asking. 'Yes, it's true. Chiefs are believed to have enquired about Mamelodi Sundowns striker Etiosa Ighodaro,' a SoccerLaduma source revealed 'You know the thing is the same people who scouted him from Nigeria for Sundowns are the same who have enquired about him for Kaizer Chiefs.' 'Actually it's not the first time they have enquired about him. They tried before when he was on loan at Chippa United but Sundowns sent him on loan at SuperSport United. But now they are apparently looking at the possibility of Sundowns letting him go and they can pounce on him.' Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1. Double World Cup-winning Springbok, RG Snyman, is one of the Leinster players, and Bok hopeful, hooker Marnus van der Merwe, represents the Scarlets. Hanekom, nominated for the SA URC Player of the Season award as well, has set the rugby field alight since his breakthrough last season and continued his fine form for the Bulls, despite some niggling injuries. Louw, nominated as SA URC Player of the Season, and Wessels have been the chief destroyers in the scrum for the Bulls. Feinberg-Mngomezulu was a fresh breeze in the competition and has entertained supporters in the Stormers' flyhalf jersey after taking over from the injured Manie Libbok. While an injury also impacted a part of his season, Esterhuizen has been a consistent performer in the backline of the Sharks throughout the season. With two awards behind his name, Hanekom will look to make it a third for the vital SA Player when he goes up against Louw and Feinberg-Mngomezulu for it. Another Stormers star of the past season received a URC accolade with lock Ruben van Heerden named as the Tackle Machine award winner.
