Aga Khan V succeeds father as head of Ismailis - International
Taking the name Aga Khan V, Prince Rahim Al-Hussaini Tuesday officially became the hereditary imam of the Ismaili Muslims, following the death of his father a week earlier.
The 53-year-old was sworn in as the movement's 50th imam at a ceremony in Lisbon, where his father, Prince Karim Al-Hussaini, or Aga Khan IV, died last Tuesday at the age of 88.
The Aga Khan is regarded as a direct descendent of the Prophet Mohammed and heads a community of some 12 million to 15 million followers around the world, concentrated in central and south Asia, Africa and the Middle East.
The Aga Khan IV became head of the movement in 1957 and invested part of the immense family fortune in developing countries, combining philanthropy with business acumen to build hospitals, housing and banking cooperatives.
He moved the headquarters of the Ismailis to Portugal following a June 2015 agreement with the Portuguese government involving tax breaks and diplomatic privileges, in exchange for investments in the fields of science and development.
The pact provided the Aga Khan with a Portuguese passport in addition to his British nationality and honorary Canadian citizenship.
The Aga Khan IV mixed with world leaders and high society, and was a noted racehorse breeder and owner.
His remembrance ceremony in Lisbon Saturday was attended by more than 300 guests, including Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and former Spanish king Juan Carlos I.

Reports: No G7 Summit Invite for India Yet
Rana Atef Canada didn't invite India so far for the upcoming G7 summit scheduled to take place between June 15 and June 17 in Canada, according to The Tribune after citing official sources. The sources told the Indian website: 'No advance preparations have been made ahead of a high-level dignitary visit such as that of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, making it clear that India will not participate in this year's G7 summit in Canada. PM Modi has attended the summit for the past six consecutive years, making this the first time India will be absent from the event." Traditionally, the host country moderates guest invitations, agenda organization and the overall tone of the summit. This allows the host to align the event with its priorities and foreign policy objectives. The G7 comprises the world's most industrialised economies: the US, UK, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and Canada. The European Union (EU), the IMF, the World Bank and the UN are also invited to attend. This year's summit will be hosted by Canada. The relationships between Canada and India have deteriorated following the killing of Khalistani separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada in June 2023. Tensions escalated after then-Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused India of involvement in the incident, a claim India strongly rejected as 'baseless'. Police to start new search near where toddler Madeleine McCann disappeared in 2007
CNN — Police investigating the disappearance of British toddler Madeleine McCann will carry out fresh searches near the Portuguese holiday resort she was last seen 18 years ago, authorities said on Monday. The three-year-old disappeared from her bed while on vacation with her family in the Praia da Luz resort, in southern Portugal, on May 3, 2007. She has not been seen since. Detectives acting on a request from a German public prosecutor will carry out 'a broad range' of searches this week in the area of Lagos, in southern Portugal, a Portuguese police statement said. The main suspect in the case is a German national identified by media as Christian Brueckner, who is currently serving a seven-year prison sentence in Germany for raping a 72-year-old woman in Portugal in 2005. He is under investigation on suspicion of murder in the McCann case but hasn't been charged. He spent many years in Portugal, including in Praia da Luz, around the time of the child's disappearance. Brueckner has denied any involvement in her disappearance. Prosecutors in Braunschweig, Germany, who are responsible for the investigation, didn't give details of the 'judicial measures' taking place in Portugal, according to Germany's dpa news agency. They said the measures are being carried out by Portuguese authorities with support from officers from Germany's Federal Criminal Police Office. Britain's Metropolitan Police said it was 'aware of the searches being carried by the BKA (German federal police) in Portugal as part of their investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann.' 'The Metropolitan Police Service is not present at the search, we will support our international colleagues where necessary,' the force added, without giving more details. The McCann case received worldwide interest for several years, with reports of sightings of her stretching as far away as Australia as well as books and television documentaries about her disappearance. Almost two decades on, investigators in the UK, Portugal and Germany are still piecing together what happened on the night she disappeared. She was in the same room as her brother and sister — 2-year-old twins — while their parents, Kate and Gerry, had dinner with friends at a nearby restaurant. The last time police resumed searches in the case was in 2023, when detectives from the three countries took part in an operation searching near a dam and a reservoir about 50 kilometers (30 miles) from the Praia da Luz resort. Madeleine's family marked the 18th anniversary of her disappearance last month, and expressed their determination to keep searching.
