Texans GM Nick Caserio downplays C.J. Stroud's shoulder injury, stating team was 'careful'
Everyone has a thought on Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud's shoulder issue that kept him out through the first six days of voluntary OTA workouts, including general manager Nick Caserio.
The difference between the GM and the folks on ESPN is that one is looking for offseason content. The other knows it's nothing more than a bunch of mumbo jumbo.
"Honestly, it was much ado about nothing," Caserio said in a Thursday morning appearance on SportsRadio 610's Payne & Pendergast. "In the spring, we're just trying to make good, smart decisions.just manage the player as we see fit. In the end, the focus is on getting him ready for training camp. He had a good attitude when he was in the building. He obviously trained and worked on his body and his overall strength development which that's what the offseason program is usually for."
Stroud, who enters a crucial Year 3 as the face of the franchise, threw the final two days of Texans' minicamp at a limited capacity. Speaking after Tuesday's workout, the Pro Bowl quarterback said he spent the offseason aiming to lose body fat, gain muscle and get faster and stronger.
"I was already throwing before you guys got to see me out there, pretty normally, I think y'all don't have much to talk about so everything is blown up," Stroud said after practice.
The Texans were simply being cautious with Stroud's role this offseason after being sacked 52 times during the 2024 season. Texans coach DeMeco Ryans and new offensive coordinator downplayed the injury, stating he'd be good to go for the start of the regular season.
"It's important for me to just make sure we're protecting him," Ryans said. "To make sure we know what's best for C.J. and not really worry about the outside opinions. Nobody knows the information about our players more than me."
Caserio offered a similar sentiment surrounding the status of his franchise signal-caller, stating that while he might be limited in reps, that doesn't mean he's slacking on work around the building in other areas.
"Going back to February through March even before the offseason program we had a number of players who were here. Early on, in February or March, it might be a combination of in the building, out of the building but you know they are getting in work. C.J., when he does leave Houston, he goes off to California where he has some resources and some people he utilizes out there at UCLA where he can actually get his work in," Caserio said.
The Texans open the regular season on the road at SoFi Stadium against the Los Angeles Rams on Sept. 7.

Should the Nets pursue Bulls' Josh Giddey in 2025 NBA free-agency?

The Brooklyn Nets have plenty of cap space to use in the 2025 NBA offseason and that will be the case even if they decide to retain some of their more important free-agents. Brooklyn would like to improve on a roster that went 26-56 during the 2024-25 season and with that being said, it's fair to wonder if they would pursue a player whose stock rose significantly. Chicago Bulls guard Josh Giddey will be a restricted free-agent this summer after spending the season with the Bulls following being traded by the Oklahoma City Thunder last offseason. Giddey, 22, seemed to raise his stock significantly after averaging 14.6 points, 8.1 rebounds, 7.2 assists, and 1.2 steals per game while shooting 46.5% from the field and 37.8% from three-point land. Advertisement One of the ways that the Nets can explore using their cap space, as noted by ESPN's Bobby Marks, is by using their money to go after restricted free-agents, such as Giddey, given that most marquee unrestricted free-agents are rarely let go by their incumbent teams without a trade. Given where Chicago is in the context of the league, they finished the season with a 39-43 record, they may be willing to let someone like Giddey walk if the price to keep him is too steep. HoopsHype's Michael Scotto reported in May that "the belief around the league is Bulls restricted free agent guard Josh Giddey hopes to command a similar five-year, $150 million deal to Orlando Magic guard Jalen Suggs and earn roughly $30 million annually or more." While paying Giddey $30 million per season would be a big investment for Brooklyn so early in the rebuild, it's important to note that figure may be the going rate for someone of his caliber. NBA insider Jake Fischer reported last week that Giddey is expected to remain with the Bulls due to the season that he had for Chicago along with the fact that the team might be trying to retool around Giddey after trading away DeMar DeRozan and Zach LaVine over the course of the campaign. Time will tell what the Bulls do in free-agency, but if they're willing to let Giddey walk, Brooklyn could have their point guard of the future. ESPN Analyst Calls Out RGIII Over Angel Reese Situation

Saturday marked the first game of the season for both the Indiana Fever and the Chicago Sky. Each team entered the year with optimism after stellar campaigns from rookies Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese, respectively. Clark and the Fever ran away with Saturday's game and the former Iowa star posted a triple-double, but most of the conversation around the game came after a moment of physicality in the second half. Advertisement Clark fouled Reese as she went up for a layup, and seemed to push the Sky star to the ground after the foul. Reese was upset and stood up quickly, and the two players were separated. Clark was assessed with a flagrant 1 foul while Reese received a technical for exchanging words with Fever star Aliyah Boston. Both players simply acknowledged the situation as a basketball play and moved on, but the discourse has persisted throughout the weekend and now, into the week. Former ESPN analyst and Heisman trophy winner Robert Griffin III weighed in on the topic, saying that Reese "hates" Clark. "It's staring us all right in the face, but people are afraid to say it," Griffin said on social media. Advertisement "Goes after and tries to punch Caitlin Clark after a routine 'make them earn it foul' after Angel Reese fouled Aaliyah Boston with a push in the back that wasn't called. That's not just hate. That's jealousy and resentment," Griffin suggested. On Monday, one of Griffin's former colleagues at ESPN and a fellow former NFL player responded to his claim. "RGIII saying he could recognize 'hate when 'he' see(s) it', when referring to Angel Reese's feelings toward Caitlin Clark was irresponsible, but not at all surprising," said ESPN's Ryan Clark. "RGIII plays into the narrative that Reese is the villain of Clark's hero origin him to the list of black men who've adopted the corny trend of denigrating black women to affirm their choices." Advertisement Clark then said that Griffin "attacking Reese multiple times in order to gain favor from his desired crowd" won't help him earn the acceptance he is seeking. We'll see the continued fallout from the controversial flagrant foul and the alleged abuse Reese faced from the crowd on Saturday, but it's clear that 2025 will be another emotionally-charged season for certain fans of the WNBA.

Braydon Hawthorne has been a lifelong Kentucky fan: 'When childhood dreams become REALITY'

Mark Pope and his staff pulled off a really impressive recruiting win on Tuesday night as they landed the commitment of 4-star wing Braydon Hawthorne. A top-40 player in the class of 2025 by several recruiting sites, Hawthorne chose the Kentucky Wildcats over Duke, Pittsburgh, West Virginia, and Virginia Tech. Advertisement What makes it so impressive is that Kentucky was able to land a major prospect while already having crazy roster depth. This shows just how much Hawthorne wanted to be a Cat, and a quote put out by Paul Biancardi of ESPN helps shed some light on how Coach Pope and the UK brand helped land the talented wing. 'I have a great relationship with Coach Pope and the staff. We have had many conversations about basketball and life. I have been a lifelong Kentucky fan. This means everything to me,' said Hawthorne. In addition, Hawthorne shared an Instagram story post with a photo he took next to the Joe B. Hall statue as a child. 'When childhood dreams become REALITY,' he wrote. You gotta love to hear that, BBN. A great addition and a solid player for hopefully years to come. Advertisement More from
