Her partner's body was found in a bathroom with what police have described as "apparent self-inflicted stab wounds."
He has been named as 46-year-old Jarrod Gelling.
Zunilda, who called herself Amy, had been missing since Saturday after flying to the Costa del Sol from Dubai.
Her relatives described Jarrod overnight as "aggressive" and said they believe he could have lashed out after she told him she wanted a divorce.
Zunilda's niece Yuleydis told Malaga-based newspaper Sur her aunt was going to help Jarrod following a knee operation before travelling to Portugal to compete and then going back to Colombia alone after taking the divorce decision.
She said: "For my aunt it was the last trip, a goodbye.
"She had taken the decision to split from her husband because of his aggressive behaviour.
"They had broken up already once and were apart for quite a while but then got back together again to try to resolve things, although the mistreatment continued."
The couple's bodies were found just before 2pm yesterday inside a property on a residential estate.
Zunilda's gym companion raised the alarm saying he hadn't seen her since June 14.
A National Police spokesman in Malaga said: "The National Police is investigating the death of a man and woman found lifeless at a property in Fuengirola.
"In the absence of official identification of the bodies, initial inquiries are pointing to them being those of a 43-year-old woman of Colombian origin and her 46-year-old partner of American origin.
"Officers went to the property on a residential estate about 1.45pm after a friend of the woman whose body was found reported her disappearance on Wednesday at the National Police Station in Torremolinos.
"Her body showed obvious signs of violence and that of the man's signs indicating a suicide-type death which is something an autopsy will have to confirm."
The suspected killer is believed to have Colombian and US nationality.
If the woman's death is confirmed as a gender violence murder, it would be the third so far in the province of Malaga and the fifth in Southern Spain's Andalucia region.
Spanish news website El Espanol has reported that Zunilda also had more than 100,000 followers on OnlyFans and Fansly.
She finished second in the NPC Worldwide Latin American Championships in 2021.
Her coach Branden Rey said in an emotional Instagram post: "We had 17 days until we were going to hit the stage and shock the world my friend.
"I told you that you could possibly be top 10 in the world by the end of this year and I meant it.
"Rest in paradise Amy."
Bodybuilder friend and coach Behnaz Azar said in an online tribute: "I don't know where to begin.
"My heart is broken, my mind is clouded, and my soul is drowning in shock and sorrow.
"Amy - my kind, strong, fierce friend.
"The most powerful woman I knew in the world of bodybuilding, yet with the gentlest heart."

Alana Armstrong: Driver cleared of murdering woman who was knocked off electric motorbike
A driver has been acquitted of murdering a 25-year-old mother who was knocked off the back of an electric motorbike. Alana Armstrong, who had a six-year-old son, died at the scene on a country lane in Pleasley, Derbyshire. Her boyfriend Jordan Newton-Kay, who was riding the electric motorbike, had his right leg amputated 15cm above the knee after the crash. Prosecutors alleged that Keaton Muldoon had "pursued" the couple on 26 November 2024 but he was found not guilty of murder following a trial at Derby Crown Court. The 23-year-old told the jury he "did not know" he had hit anyone while driving his Land Rover Discovery and thought he had overtaken the pair. Muldoon said he feared he was going to be robbed but did not "chase" the Sur-Ron off-road bike after it had stopped by his 4x4 at a lay-by. He had pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving and serious injury by dangerous driving before the trial began in May. The jury also cleared Muldoon of causing grievous bodily harm with intent to Mr Newton-Kay. Muldoon - who the court heard was a drug dealer - was the father to a newborn baby at the time of the collision. He said he lied to police that his uncle had possession of the Land Rover when the crash happened because he was "scared" about the murder investigation. Earlier this week, he told the jury: "My head was all over I didn't know what to think. "I knew I wasn't going to see my children for a bit. I just had a newborn baby. I promised I would always be there."

Woman appears in court charged with murdering sister in north London flat
A woman has appeared in court charged with murdering her 69-year-old sister who was found stabbed inside her north London home. Nancy Pexton, also 69, appeared at Highbury Corner magistrates court on Friday charged with murdering Jennifer Abbott, also known as Sarah Steinberg, last Tuesday. It is understood Pexton and Abbott are sisters, and Pexton is nine months younger than Abbott. Abbott was found dead by her niece and neighbours who broke her door down at her flat in Camden last Friday, after her family had not heard from her for several days. A postmortem examination gave the cause of death as sharp force trauma. Neighbours said they regularly saw Abbott walking her pet corgi in the area, with one describing her as 'exuberant' and 'vivacious'. The Metropolitan police previously said officers were investigating whether Abbott's death was linked to a diamond-encrusted Rolex missing from her home. In a short hearing, Pexton, of no fixed address, spoke only to confirm her name and date of birth. Deputy district judge Lee Marklew remanded the 69-year-old in custody to appear at the Old Bailey on 24 June. He told her: 'You will meet your barrister and will be given some advice in the coming weeks. This is an administrative hearing. You will be remanded in custody until then.'
