Bus operator's permit revoked over Gerik crash, no appeal allowed, says Loke
KUALA LUMPUR, June 11 — The operating permit of a bus company involved in a fatal crash in Gerik, Perak, has been revoked with immediate effect, Transport Minister Anthony Loke announced today, according to The Vibes.
Loke said the company owner committed two significant violations: leasing the operating permit to a third party and failing to activate the bus's GPS.
'The owner leased it to a third party. The owner has an address in Kedah and leased it to an operator in Kelantan, receiving RM500 monthly.
'This is in breach of the conditions. When they were asked to submit a GPS report, they couldn't because the GPS was not even activated,' he told reporters during a press conference here.
He stressed that the revocation of the permit is permanent, with no opportunity for appeal.
Loke also addressed the fatal crash involving nine Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) policemen in Teluk Intan, announcing that a preliminary report on the incident will be published tomorrow on the Transport Ministry's official website, The Vibes reported.
He said the report includes technical findings from Puspakom and the Road Transport Department (RTD).
'The preliminary findings were presented to the Cabinet earlier today, but the full report has yet to be completed.
'This is an initial report, not the final one. The aim is to allow the public to understand the facts and provide researchers with access to data concerning road safety issues, ultimately contributing towards improving the overall road safety landscape,' was quoted as saying.

KUALA LUMPUR : The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has urged for improved safety measures at construction sites following the discovery of a British traveller's body at a site in Bangsar recently. NIOSH chairman Chong Chieng Jen said the incident raised questions about how the public could access the area and called for a review of existing safety protocols. 'Construction sites are inherently high-risk and should not, under any circumstances, be accessible to the public,' he said in a statement today. On June 5, police confirmed that the body found the previous day at a construction site in Bangsar was that of the missing 25-year-old British national, last seen on May 27. Chong said Section 15 of the Occupational Safety and Health (Amendment) Act (OSHA) 2022 spells out the duty of employers to ensure the safety, health and welfare of employees at the workplace, while Section 17 emphasises the responsibility to safeguard others present at the site. 'Employers and self-employed individuals are also required, as far as reasonably practicable, to ensure that their operations do not pose safety or health risks to non-employees. 'They must also provide information on any hazards that could affect the safety or health of individuals present at the worksite,' the statement said. Chong reminded developers, contractors and all relevant parties to comply with the Act or risk being fined up to RM500,000, jailed for up to two years, or both. He said that preventive steps, such as effective perimeter fencing, adequate security surveillance, systematic access control, and clear warning signage, must be standard at all construction sites. 'Risk management at construction sites should not only focus on protecting workers, but also on ensuring the safety of the public, especially in densely populated urban areas frequented by tourists,' he said. In addition, NIOSH wants the occupational safety and health department and the Construction Industry Development Board to conduct an immediate and comprehensive investigation to identify any breach of standard operating procedures (SOPs) or provisions under OSHA. Chong added that NIOSH is ready to cooperate with authorities and the industry to promote a stronger safety culture through training, awareness programmes and a better understanding of the OSHA (Amendment) 2022.

Bus driver in fatal UPSI crash arrested

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The driver of the chartered bus that crashed in Gerik on Monday killing 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students, has been arrested. Perak police chief Noor Hisam Nordin said the 39-year-old man was detained at about 6pm after being discharged from Taiping Hospital, where he was treated for injuries sustained in the crash. The suspect will be brought to the Gerik district police headquarters (IPD) to assist in the investigation under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which pertains to causing death by reckless or dangerous driving. 'We have received instructions from the Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC). (He) will be charged in the Gerik (magistrates') court tomorrow,' Nor Hisam said in a Bernama report. The bus was chartered by UPSI students who had celebrated Hari Raya Aidiladha in Jerteh, Terengganu, over the weekend, and were travelling back to their campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak. It overturned at Km53 of the East-West Highway near Tasik Banding, Gerik, killing 15 students. The crash also left 33 others injured, including the bus driver, his assistant and four people in an MPV involved in the collision. On Tuesday, Sinar Harian reported that Bukit Aman traffic investigation and enforcement department director Yusri Hassan Basri had revealed that the bus driver had 18 outstanding summonses. He said 13 summonses were for speeding, three for not wearing a seatbelt, one for not having a third brake light, and another for involvement in a previous accident. Transport minister Loke Siew Fook reportedly said that based on dashcam footage from another road user, it was clear that the bus was 'speeding and overtaking' before it lost control and overturned.

(Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : A powerful explosion early this morning damaged three houses in Bukit Mertajam, Penang, with police suspecting the incident was linked to a debt dispute. Seberang Perai Tengah police chief Helmi Aris said initial investigations indicated that firecrackers were thrown into one of the houses, causing a significant explosion that damaged the targeted home and two adjacent properties. The ceilings and front yards of all three homes were damaged by the 1.05am blast. Two vehicles parked outside the affected homes were also damaged by the impact, said Helmi in a statement. 'The incident is suspected to be related to a debt. The suspects are believed to be two unidentified men who fled in a car,' he said. Helmi called on members of the public who witnessed the incident or have any information to contact the Seberang Perai Tengah police or senior investigating officer Assan Alimudin at 012-4418081. The case is being probed for committing mischief by fire under Section 435 of the Penal Code, which provides for a maximum sentence of 14 years in prison and a fine, upon conviction. The case is also being investigated under Section 6 of the Explosives Act 1957 for causing an explosion likely to endanger life or property, punishable by up to seven years' imprisonment, a fine of RM10,000, or both, upon conviction.
