BKFC 76 results: Jessica Eye wins first fight back from retirement, beats UFC veteran Mariya Agapova
Jessica Eye is going home with a couple of cuts and some new bruises but a win on her record as the one-time UFC title challenger returned from retirement and beat Mariya Agapova at BKFC 76. The story of the fight was volume and accuracy with Eye outlanding Agapova by a wide margin as she consistently pressed forward to close the distance and then unloaded with a barrage of punches. When it was over, Eye had clearly done enough to earn the victory with the judges scoring the contest 49-45, 50-44 and 49-45 in her favor as she moves to 1-0 in the BKFC ring. Advertisement 'These bruises heal but the evil lives on,' Eye shouted to the Texas crowd. 'That's what you guys came here for. Are you not entertained?' The flyweights traded body shots to open the fight with Agapova then looked to use her reach at distance while Eye was methodically stalking her across the ring. While she did end up with a cut over her eye from an early exchange, Eye showed a lot of confidence while coming after Agapova while trying to set up a heavy right hand. Eye continuously looked to get inside while pressing Agapova against the ropes and then unleashing a barrage of punches. A couple of wild exchanges saw both fighters land some solid shots but Eye was landing with better power. The end of the third round saw Eye finally unleash her biggest succession of punches as she went hard to the body and then back up top to the head just before the bell sounded. Advertisement The crowd was getting a little restless as Eye was constantly pressing forward, pushing Agapova into the ropes and then trying to throw punches on the inside. That inevitably led to the referee breaking them apart and resetting in the center of the ring. Eye did manage to clip Agapova with a stiff right hand just before the fourth round ended that definitely got her attention. With two minutes remaining, Eye kept moving forward aggressively when she popped Agapova, who stumbled backwards before hitting the canvas. While Agapova complained that she got shoved rather than knocked down, the referee administered the required count before allowing the action to continue. Eye went back to the body again with another blistering combination just before the fight came to an end. Overall, Eye threw over 300 strikes during the fight and she connected with more than 200 shots, which was far more than Agapova across the five round fight. Advertisement Following nearly three years out of action, the 38-year-old veteran returned with a win on Saturday and it appears Eye plans to keep going with a new career started as a member of the BKFC roster. When the Atlanta Dream drafted Te-Hina Paopao from South Carolina, they wanted a veteran point guard. The 22-year-old was one of the older players in this year's draft class. However, she has given the Dream what they wanted, fitting in well alongside Rhyne Howard, one of the league's best shooters. Against Sabrina Ionescu and the New York Liberty, Howard and her teammates needed more out of the rookie. Luckily for them, Paopao delivered in a big way in the first half. Advertisement Paopao fueled her team to a three point lead at halftime, tying her career-high with 16 points in the first half alone. She only missed one shot in the first two quarters, going 6-for-7 from the field and 4-for-5 from 3-point range. Paopao and Howard finished the third quarter as the only two Dream players in double figures. The game at the Liberty is a big one for Atlanta. The Dream have been a dominant team this season, but get to see how they stack up against one of the WNBA's elite teams. Offensively, Paopao's contributions had the Dream going blow-for-blow with Ionescu and Co.. However, the Liberty point guard far outscored any Atlanta player in the game. Despite that, though, the Dream held a lead into the fourth quarter. Advertisement A lot of Atlanta's season comes down to just how far Howard can take them. Allisha Gray and Brittney Griner are there to support her, but the Dream rely on their star. However, if Paopao's career half is a sign of what is to come, the future is bright. On a team that desperately needs scoring off the bench, the rookie's explosive half is a godsend. The Dream drafted Paopao ahead of two of her South Carolina teammates in the second round of the draft. Makayla Thompson and Bree Hall are both better scorers than the point guard. However, Paopao's value comes in her versatility. Regardless of if they win or lose, pushing New York to the limit is a good sign for Atlanta. The Dream still have a ways to go as contenders, including figuring out their rotations. If their rookie continues to shoot the lights out, though, head coach Karl Smesko will have no choice but to give her more minutes. The Indiana Fever star leads all players with 515,993 votes and is also giving some of her teammates a boost as well. Look no further than Sophie Cunningham, the woman who Fever fans have recently dubbed 'The Enforcer.' She currently has the 23rd-most votes, ranking above multi-time All-Stars and plenty of players who are simply having a superior season. Cunningham is averaging 6.4 points and 4.3 rebounds in 22.6 minutes per contest while shooting 38.2 percent from the field and 40.9 percent from 3-point range. The veteran is a valuable role player who works hard on defense, but she is obviously not All-Star material at this present time. Her massive spike in popularity can best be attributed to the physical aggression she unleashed on Connecticut Sun guard Jacy Sheldon, who had multiple heated exchanges with Clark in Tuesday night's game. With Indiana leading by double-digits late in the fourth quarter, Cunningham halted a Sheldon drive by wrapping around her neck area and bringing her down to the floor. A struggle ensued after the whistle, and No. 8 earned instant folk-hero status. Advertisement Sun head coach Rachid Meziane denounced the foul as 'stupid,' but it is clear many people, especially Caitlin Clark and Fever fans, appreciated the retaliation. Though, when such things like All-Star voting are impacted by viral moments and non-performance related factors, backlash is inevitable. 'The people voting for Sophie Cunningham to be an all-star need a serious evaluation,' @citimsc8 argued on X. 'Sophie Cunningham placing higher than Skylar Diggins, Jackie Young, and Rhyne Howard?' @ChristanWNBA posted, bewildered by the latest results. 'Clearly we aren't watching the same games.' Are things getting out of hand? The former Missouri star's potential All-Star candidacy is a polarizing topic, to say the least, but she is hardly the only player who is benefiting from the aforementioned Caitlin Clark Effect. Lexie Hull is enjoying a breakout campaign, shooting 56.3 percent from 3-point land (2.7 attempts per game), but she does not have the present or past credentials to justify a top-10 slot in the All-Star voting. Advertisement Kate Martin, Clark's Iowa teammate, is in the top-35 despite playing only 16.0 minutes per contest with the Golden State Valkyries. Indiana forward Damiris Dantas is logging less than 12 minutes a night and is raking in more votes than future Hall of Famers Tina Charles and Brittney Griner. The Fever are clearly the nucleus of the WNBA, regardless of their .500 record. Clark is a gold mine, as all those around her can attest, but Cunningham's ferocity is obviously giving her an abundance of standalone appeal as far as the public is concerned. The fan vote is worth only 50 percent, but if the former second-round draft pick continues to resonate with Indianapolis, she could possibly find herself in Gainbridge Fieldhouse for the 2025 All-Star Game.
