Tearful Andrew Garfield honours family members believed to have died in Holocaust, Entertainment News

Andrew Garfield broke down in tears as he honoured his family members believed to have perished in the Holocaust.
The 41-year-old actor delved into his family history for an episode of genealogy series Who Do You Think You Are? and he traced his roots back to Poland, revealing his Jewish great-grandfather Ludwig Garfinkel managed to flee to London in 1910, but three of Ludwig's sisters stayed behind and are believed to have been murdered at Nazi death camp Treblinka.
Andrew visited the site of Treblinka and wept as he placed three stones on a memorial dedicated to all those from the family's hometown of Kielce who were killed at the camp.
He explained: "This is a memorial stone for the Jews from Kielce that met their ultimate fate here in Treblinka, which my great-grandfather's three sisters, we imagine, had to have been murdered.
"Szajndia, Dworja, Basia. Their lives were deemed so valueless and the Nazis attempted to erase even the memory of them, even their names, even any record of them.
"And they had succeeded in certain ways. They were just normal girls, they were just normal women who just wanted a life, they wanted to live, to thrive, but this journey that we've been on has recovered my memory of them and my family's memory of them and I'm grateful for that.
"I wish I had known you better, I wish you peace."
The episode also followed Andrew's great-great-grandmother Chaja, who escaped the Holocaust by moving to Brazil in 1936 to join her daughter Ruchla.
It was revealed that Ruchla's husband was the cousin of Władysław Szpilman, the Jewish musician whose story was told in Oscar-winning movie The Pianist starring Adrian Brody.
It comes after Andrew recently admitted he now feels an urgent need to live life as "fully" as possible.
He told Variety: "I've been initiated recently into a new visceral understanding of how f****** short this visit is on this planet, in this body. And I feel this crazy new urgency."
Andrew's entire outlook on life has shifted in recent years, with the actor explaining that he now wants to do things that "speak to [his] soul".
He added: "I only want to do the things that speak to my soul. Culturally, right now, there's so much numbness and lack of awareness of how life matters and that we all have a soul."

FACT CHECK: Did Donald Trump Post on Truth Social That Elon Musk 'Totally' Did a Nazi Salute?

There have been several claims floating on social media amid the escalating feud between Elon Musk and Donald Trump. On Friday, a claim surfaced online alleging that President Trump wrote on Truth Social that the tech mogul and ex-White House adviser "totally" did a Nazi salute. The claim went viral in no time. However, the claim is not true and just like many of the rumors have been circulating online, confusing users. Musk and Trump have been engaged in an online feud over the past few days which intensified on Thursday, with both going out of control. Since then several claims have surfaced and much like the others are false. The Weird Claim The claim first appeared on Thursday. According to the claim, Trump posted on social media that Musk "totally" did a Nazi salute. The alleged post read, "That totally was a Nazi salute that Elon did by the way. You know it. I know it. Everyone knows it." The message shown in the image referred to an incident during Trump's second Inauguration Day in January, when Musk raised his arm in a way that many felt resembled the stiff-armed salute linked to Nazism. Musk later accused the "legacy media" of wrongly portraying his gesture. The image was shared on multiple social media platforms, including a June 6, 2025 post on X from the @TylerDurden account. The fake post was uploaded without any accompanying caption or explanation. Several social media users have since been trying to verify the authenticity of the post. However, the claim is completely false, with the intention of either cracking a joke or spreading misinformation amid the ongoing feud. No Authenticity of Image An extensive review of Donald Trump's Truth Social account also showed no evidence of a post matching the claim between May 31 and June 6, 2025. Also, a Google search using the "site:" operator to look for the term "Nazi" within returned no results, suggesting that no such post had been recently indexed by Google. Trump's Truth, a site that keeps a record of Trump's posts on Truth Social, also showed no entries containing the phrase "Nazi salute." The claim, thus, is completely false.

Actor Haley Joel Osment ordered to attend Alcoholics Anonymous after ski resort arrest

LOS ANGELES - A judge has ordered American actor Haley Joel Osment to attend Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) meetings and therapy sessions for the next six months as part of a deal to dispose of charges of public intoxication and cocaine possession after he insulted the police. The 37-year-old, who rose to fame as the child star of horror film The Sixth Sense (1999), was arrested in April at a ski resort in Mono County, California. Police footage of the arrest showed Osment refusing to answer questions from officers. He also asserted that he was being tortured and kidnapped by a Nazi and used an anti-Semitic slur while addressing an officer. Later, he apologised for his words and said he had experienced a blackout. At a court appearance on June 2, a judge granted Osment's request for a one-year diversion from prosecution, saying he would dismiss the charges if over the next six months the actor obeys all laws, attends three AA meetings a week and meets with his therapist twice a week. Diversion is an alternative procedure in criminal cases in many states that allows certain defendants to avoid prosecution and a criminal record by agreeing to complete a rehabilitation programme and a period of probation. David Anderson, the Mono County district attorney, said in a statement that his office disagreed with the judge's decision, adding: 'Based on Mr Osment's prior Driving Under the Influence (DUI) conviction, as well as his slurs toward the arresting officer, my office did not believe diversion was appropriate.' Osment is scheduled to reappear in court in January, when the court will review his compliance with the orders. If he does not complete the diversion programme, criminal proceedings will be restarted. Osment, who will play a serial killer in the upcoming second season of the hit Netflix series Wednesday (2022 to present) that premieres on Aug 6, was charged with disorderly conduct and cocaine possession – both misdemeanours – after local officers confronted him in a parking area at the Mammoth Mountain Ski Area in eastern California, according to the Mono County District Attorney's Office. Police bodycam videos show Osment, who appears intoxicated, going limp when the officers tried to arrest him. 'You'll wish you treated me nicer,' he is heard saying in the video. In a statement after the arrest, Osment said that he was horrified by his own behaviour. 'Had I known I used this disgraceful language in the throes of a blackout, I would have spoken up sooner,' he said, according to The New York Post. Osment, who lost his home in the devastating wildfires that swept through Los Angeles in January, added that his recent troubles were no excuse for using 'disgusting' language. 'From the bottom of my heart, I apologise to absolutely everyone that this hurts,' he said. 'What came out of my mouth was nonsensical garbage - I've let the Jewish community down and it devastates me.' Osment was previously arrested in 2006 and pleaded no contest to one count of driving under the influence of alcohol and one count of possession of marijuana, according to People. He was sentenced to 60 hours of probation and to attend AA meetings. NYTIMES Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you.

Disney's ‘Lilo & Stitch' crushes Memorial Day debut in North America

[LOS ANGELES] Theatres across North America are enjoying an exceptional Memorial Day holiday weekend, with two new much-anticipated blockbusters bringing in an estimated box office totaling well over US$250 million, analysts said on Sunday. Disney's family-friendly Lilo & Stitch earned an estimated US$183 million, a record for the four-day Memorial Day weekend, according to Variety. The film has already taken in an additional US$158 million internationally, industry tracker Exhibitor Relations reported. 'This is a sensational opening,' placing the film among the top three Disney live-action remakes, said David A. Gross of Franchise Entertainment Research. Maia Kealoha (as Lilo), Hannah Waddingham, Courtney B. Vance and Zach Galifianakis star, while Chris Sanders again provides the voice of the chaos-creating blue alien Stitch. In third, dropping two spots from its opening last weekend, was Warner Bros and New Line's horror film Final Destination: Bloodlines, at US$24.5 million. Kaitlyn Santa Juana stars as a young woman who has to deal with the grisly aftereffects of her grandmother having long ago cheated Death. Fourth place went to Disney and Marvel's superhero film Thunderbolts*, at US$11.6 million. Florence Pugh and Sebastian Stan lead a motley bunch of misfits and antiheroes. The film has taken in more than US$350 million worldwide. And in fifth was Ryan Coogler's vampire thriller Sinners, raking in US$11.2 million. The film has now earned US$259 million domestically to become one of the highest-grossing R-rated films ever, according to Variety.
