Offshore betting ads top complaints to ASCI in 2024–25

The Hindu5 days ago

Advertisements promoting offshore betting and gambling platforms constituted the largest share of complaints received by the Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) in 2024–25, the self-regulatory body said in its Annual Complaints Report.
Of the 7,078 advertisements reviewed by ASCI, 43.52% — or over 3,000 — were related to offshore betting and gambling. These platforms, routinely banned by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, have witnessed rapid proliferation online, prompting concerns among stakeholders in the real money gaming (RMG) sector.
'ASCI has been escalating advertisements that are prohibited by law to appropriate regulators for appropriate action,' the report noted. The number of such advertisements increased from 2,707 in 2023–24 to 3,347 in the past year. These include promotions related to betting and gambling, prohibited drugs making magic health claims, alcohol, and tobacco.
The volume of gambling-related advertisements has more than doubled, ASCI said, 'from 1,311 the previous year to 3,081 cases this year.' Several of these were flagged in collaboration with RMG industry associations, which established a 'special monitoring unit' in January 2025 to aid detection.
ASCI also reported continued cooperation with sector-specific regulators. A similar monitoring arrangement with MahaRERA, Maharashtra's real estate regulatory authority, resulted in the identification of 1,755 non-compliant advertisements in the real estate sector.
The second-largest category of flagged advertisements was submitted to the Ministry of AYUSH under the Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act, 1954. ASCI reported 233 ads promoting products as miracle cures in violation of the Act.
'Twenty-one ads directly promoting alcoholic beverages on social media were reported to the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting,' the report added.
Influencer marketing also remained a significant area of concern. ASCI said it investigated 1,015 ads by influencers over the year. 'Out of 100 influencer posts reviewed, only 29% had proper disclosures, while 2% cases were dismissed due to evidence of no material connection,' the body said. 'Alarmingly, 69% violated disclosure norms, with 56.8% lacking disclosure labels entirely and 43.2% having disclosures improperly placed within hashtags.'
While 59 influencers agreed to corrections voluntarily, five complied after jury recommendations. Another five influencers (7%) were escalated to the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting for continued non-compliance.
The fashion and lifestyle (27.5%), telecom products (21.7%), and personal care (13%) sectors accounted for 62% of all influencer-related violations, ASCI said.

Head Constable Steals Rs 51 Lakh Cash, Jewellery From Delhi Police, Arrested

New Delhi: A case of theft has come to light in the malkhana of the Delhi Police's Special Cell located at Lodhi Road. The Delhi Police Special Cell has arrested Head Constable Khurshid, who was posted in the Special Cell until a few days ago, on charges of theft. According to officials, Khurshid escaped from the Special Cell's malkhana on Friday night with around Rs 51 lakh in cash and a large quantity of jewellery. However, the malkhana in-charge became aware of the incident shortly after. Subsequent investigation, using CCTV footage, identified Head Constable Khurshid. Acting promptly, a team of the Special Cell arrested him on Saturday. According to the Special Cell, Khurshid was previously posted in the malkhana but was transferred to East Delhi a few days ago. In a separate incident, on Sunday, the Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) of the Delhi Police Crime Branch arrested a Nigerian national in connection with the possession and intended distribution of 282 grams of cocaine. Following specific intelligence inputs, the arrest was made during a targeted operation in the Old Mahabir Nagar area of Tilak Nagar, Delhi. Deputy Commissioner of Police, ANTF (Crime Branch), Apoorva Gupta, stated that the accused, David Leanne, was caught carrying a bag containing a yellow-coloured powdery substance. A field test conducted on-site by the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team confirmed the substance to be cocaine, classified as a commercial quantity under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. A case has been registered under FIR at the Crime Branch Police Station, and further investigation is underway. This operation was the result of dedicated surveillance and intelligence-gathering efforts led by ASI, who received credible information about a foreign national involved in cocaine distribution across the Delhi-NCR region. The ANTF team swiftly responded and laid a trap in the Tilak Nagar area, where Leanne was apprehended. Virat Kohli's One8 Commune faces legal action

Bengaluru, Jun 2 (UNI) The Cubbon Park Police have registered a suo motu case against One8 Commune, a pub and restaurant co-owned by cricketer Virat Kohli, for alleged violations of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA). The establishment has been booked under Sections 4 and 21 of the Act for failing to maintain a designated smoking area within its premises. This is not the first time the establishment has come under regulatory scrutiny. In July 2024, the same pub was found operating beyond the permissible hours during a routine night patrol. Police Sub-Inspector Ashok Thakur reported that the pub was still serving customers at 1:20 a.m., exceeding the city's 1 a.m. deadline for such establishments. Consequently, an FIR was filed against the pub's manager under Section 103 of the Karnataka Police Act. Additionally, in December 2024, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) issued a notice to One8 Commune over alleged fire safety violations. The civic body acted upon a complaint by a social activist, stating that the pub was operating without implementing mandated fire safety measures or obtaining a fire department clearance certificate. The BBMP had previously issued a notice on November 29, but the pub management failed to respond, prompting a seven-day deadline for compliance, failing which legal action would be initiated. One8 Commune's Bengaluru branch, located on the sixth floor of Ratnam's Complex on Kasturba Road near the Chinnaswamy Cricket Stadium, was inaugurated in December 2023. The establishment is part of a chain with outlets in major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, and Kolkata. As of now, the management of One8 Commune has not issued any public statement regarding these violations. Investigations are ongoing, and further actions will depend on the outcomes of these probes.
