Fadhlina hits out at politicising students' squabble in Terengganu
PUTRAJAYA: Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek has condemned the actions of some quarters who politicised the recent fight involving two students at a school in Terengganu.
She also denied allegations linking the mother of one of the students involved as being related to her.
"The slander linking one of the mothers of the students involved with me is irresponsible and malicious. I have never known the individual," she said in a statement here on Monday (June 16).
Fadhlina said the Education Ministry through the Terengganu Education Department had taken action on this case in accordance with the Bullying and Misconduct Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) currently in force.
As a follow-up step, she also instructed the ministry's Integrity Unit to conduct further investigations into the incident.
"I am closely following the development of this issue and want it to be resolved immediately. The ministry does not compromise with bullying and other misconduct. Strict action must be taken against anyone who is guilty," she said.
Fadhlina also stressed the ministry's commitment to ensuring that all educational institutions remain a safe environment for the well-being of students, teachers and all school staff. - Bernama

Gerik Bus Tragedy: RM1.7 Million Raised Through KPT Prihatin Fund
TANJONG MALIM, June 16 (Bernama) – The Ministry of Higher Education (KPT) has raised RM1.7 million through the Prihatin Fund to support the victims and families affected by the Gerik bus tragedy, which resulted in the deaths of 15 students from Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI). Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir said the funds collected were contributions from 40 public and private higher learning institutions which included polytechnics and community colleges, as well as contributions from various other sources such as state government agencies, financial institutions and corporate bodies. He said the special fund, managed by UPSI, will be distributed to recipients in stages and that so far, RM371,000 from the total RM1.7 million has already been disbursed to affected students and their families. "The RM1.7 million will be given to the families of the victims, and I leave it to the secretariat led by the UPSI Vice-Chancellor (Prof Datuk Dr Md Amin Md Taff) to manage the fund. "The higher learning institutions have mobilised their students, staff, and others to contribute," he told reporters after the Tahlil Perdana ceremony for the bus tragedy victims at Dewan Tuanku Canselor UPSI here tonight. Also present were Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad, Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar, Deputy Higher Education Minister Datuk Mustapha Sakmud, and Perak Education, Higher Education, Youth, and Sports Committee chairman Khairudin Abu Hanipah. Zambry also donate a month's salary of his ministership to the fund, demonstrating solidarity with the compassion shown by Malaysians. Meanwhile, Md Amin said the KPT Prihatin Fund, is expected to close this Friday. "Once we conclude the donation drive, the remaining funds will be given directly to the families. Thank you to everyone for your support. We aim to finalise this process within the week," he said.

Two Retirees Lose Over RM1 Mln To Online Investment Scams
-- Photograph for illustrative purposes GEORGE TOWN, June 16 (Bernama) -- Two retirees lost over RM1 million after falling victim to online investment scams recently, according to Penang police. Penang police chief Datuk Hamzah Ahmad said in a statement that in the first case, the Seberang Perai Tengah District Police Headquarters received a report from a 55-year-old man on June 12, alleging that he had been scammed by an online investment company for RM827,120. 'In early April, the victim came across an investment advertisement on Facebook promising high returns and subsequently got in touch with a woman…via WhatsApp. 'The victim was promised a seven per cent return on each investment made,' he said, adding that the man was told to download the company's app to register as a member and invest through the platform. Hamzah said the victim made 22 fund transfers into six different company accounts between April 19 and May 26. 'He realised he had been scammed after being unable to withdraw profits totalling RM23,241,952 as shown on the investment app and subsequently lodged a police report,' he said. In a separate case, he stated that a 56-year-old retired factory technician lost RM321,250 after falling victim to another online investment scam, adding that the victim lodged a police report on June 12 at the Seberang Perai Utara District Police Headquarters. Hamzah stated that around December of last year, the victim came across an investment advertisement on Instagram that promised high returns. He then contacted a female suspect via WhatsApp, who promised a 30 per cent return within three months. He said that on March 21, the victim made the first fund transfer of RM20,000 through the company's app, and within less than three months, he received RM14,150 in profits. 'He made 11 additional fund transfers between March 27 and June 3 into four different company accounts linked to the scheme, but realised he had been scammed after he could not withdraw RM280,000 in purported profits and was instead asked by the suspect to pay an RM120,000 withdrawal fee,' he added.
