UK band robbed at gunpoint in US say it is still ‘greatest country in the world'
The van was broken into by masked thieves, who pulled out a gun, when they had stopped for coffee at a Starbucks in Vallejo, California, late last year, with the group's singer saying tracks they recorded for their latest album, which was released last week, predicted the robbery.
Indie rockers Sports Team, who released their Boys These Days LP last week, had personal items stolen but they did not lose any equipment.
Singer Alex Rice told PA: 'It was almost like a pretty wild coincidence.
'We had a track, the album was all written and recorded, submitted well before we did that tour, but we did have this track, Bang Bang Bang on it, which we ended up putting out fairly soon after, which I guess was about this weird juxtaposition you always find in the US.
'It's got lines in it like Mickey Mouse and AR 15 kind of thing, it's side by side, the kind of bars that we were drinking in the US, and people will show you where their friends were shot, the kind of gun holes on the walls.
'So I think we've always found that element of gun culture in the US kind of a slightly odd element, like, I understand it, and when we go there I think America is the greatest country in the world still, but I think it just seems such a blind spot.
'And I think some of the politicisation around it just doesn't do anyone any favours.'
The band initially tried to stop the burglars, after a Starbucks worker had noticed their van being broken into, in December 2024, before the gun was pointed at them.
Rice said the robbery quickly became 'politicised'.
He added: 'The interview requests come in, and we did a nice one with ABC, where it's like you talk about gun crime being awful, and you talk about charities involved and stuff.
'And then immediately you get a request from Fox News as well, who kind of want to politicise it, make it about (California governor) Gavin Newsom defunding the police kind of thing.
'It's how quickly kind of an event can be spun, (which) was quite interesting to us.
'So we were going to do the Fox interview and they were going to send the Fox mobile to this town we were staying in at the time, and they cancelled it as soon as we posted about an anti-gun charity.'
Rice said he and the band have yet to hear back from the police, having been asked to fill out an online form when they called 911.
He said: 'We haven't heard anything back since at all, I think there was probably a bit of scrutiny on the police department in Vallejo, which I know is a kind of particularly embattled police force.
'I'm sure these aren't people who are not wanting to solve gun crimes, but I think it probably speaks to problems with funding, and the kind of pressures the police force are in, in that part of the world.
'I mean, what would they deal with if they won't deal with an armed robbery, you know?'
The band, made up of Rice, Rob Knaggs, Henry Young, Oli Dewdney, Al Greenwood, and Ben Mack, released their debut album, Deep Down Happy, in 2020, which was nominated for the Mercury Prize and went to number two in the UK charts.
Their 2022 follow-up, Gulp!, was also well received and rose to number three in the charts.
The group, who performed at Glastonbury in 2022, released their third album, Boys These Days, on May 23.

The jackpot winner, who lives in Cambridgeshire, bought his ticket for just £25. And, he only started entering the Omaze draws last month. Anthony has been working as a deckhand on yachts for the past year. He added: "I was backpacking in Spain when Omaze got in touch to tell me I'd won something. "I didn't have any credit on my phone, so I didn't see any of the missed calls or emails at first, but when I eventually topped up and saw all the messages, I started to think I might have won something pretty decent. "When Omaze actually called me to say I'd won the £5 million house in the Cotswolds, I was stunned. Although it already offers a whopping £180,000 worth of furnishings. If the 25-year-old chooses to rent out the luxurious pad, estate agents recon he could rake in up to £18,000 per month. "This is my first time in the Cotswolds and I can see what all the fuss is about, it's beautiful around here," said Anthony. "The house is stunning, the walk-in fridge is bigger than my current kitchen… and that's just the fridge. "Everything has been done so nicely, I love it. I'm looking forward to diving into the pool and hosting all my friends and family in such an amazing house. "I've been working as a deckhand on yachts for the past year, so I'm more used to sleeping below deck in cramped bunk beds than places like this-I can stand up straight in this place for a start. "We'll be having a huge family Christmas here. Rita Ora releases new single Heat with music video shot on Miami beach
The 34-year-old, who is best known for songs such as Hot Right Now, How We Do (Party) and I Will Never Let You Down, released the track ahead of a performance at World Pride Music Festival in Washington DC. Speaking about the track, she said: 'Dropping Heat on the same day as my World Pride performance feels like the perfect way to kick off summer – it's such a special moment for me and for my fans who have supported me over the years. 'I'm obsessed with this track, and honestly, I just wanted to have fun with it. It's bold, cheeky, and totally drenched in golden, feel-good energy. 'For me, it's all about celebrating freedom, joy, being unapologetically yourself and owning who you are.' The single is accompanied with a music video inspired by photographer Martin Parr, directed by Justin Daashuur Hopkins, and looks at the everyday lives of Miami beach goers. Tinie Tempah says nightlife crisis means ‘losing that physical connection'
The 36-year-old rapper, from south London, is backing the Night Time Industries Association's (NTIA) The Last Night Out campaign, which pushes for people to get away from their screens and onto the dance floor. 'As a dad, I've seen how different things are for this generation,' said Tempah, who has not released a studio album since 2017's Youth, as he appears to have focused towards his children and taken a break from music. 'We're losing that physical connection, the joy and energy that you get from dancing, meeting new people from all backgrounds and being free. Tinie Tempah is backing The Last Night Out campaign (Chris J Ratcliffe/PA) 'I didn't want to just talk about it – I wanted to do something. Music brings people together – and nightlife is where that magic happens.' The campaign calls on the Government to step up and provide urgent financial support for night-time venues as well as cultural protection for 'iconic clubs'. The NTIA released data last year showing 37% of nightclubs had closed across the UK since March 2020. Tempah has returned to the studio and is developing a collaboration with gaming platforms Roblox and Fortnite to integrate music and virtual life, according to the NTIA. He is also creating a short film and a series of live events focused on 'driving energetic movement and nightlife', which will be unveiled at technology, creative and business conference SXSW London on Friday. He will be joined at the event at London nightclub XOYO by NTIA chief executive Michael Kill, north London musician and DJ Majestic and BBC Radio 1 DJ Charlie Tee for a 'one-off evening of music, culture and conversation about the future of the UK's night-time economy'. Mr Kill said: 'It's been amazing to see how Tinie Tempah has resonated with The Last Night Out's message. 'He really understands what's at stake – not just for club culture, but for society. 'Nightlife isn't just entertainment; it's a space for freedom, creativity, connection and movement. We're thrilled to have Tinie Tempah bring his voice, his energy and his music to the campaign.' Introduced to the NTIA by the Mayor of London's office, Tempah believes the shared experience of nightlife is an important part of the UK's future society. Tempah, known for hits including Written In The Stars and Pass Out, has presented the six-part art show Extraordinary Portraits as well as a property programme called Extraordinary Extensions. His recent music has included the 2021 track Love Me Like This with Swedish singer Maia Wright, and 2023 song How You Samba, a collaboration with Dutch DJ Kris Kross Amsterdam and Mexican singer and songwriter Sofia Reyes.
