220 requests to replace Paris 2024 Olympic medals

BBC News28-02-2025

A total of 220 requests have been made to replace medals won at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The medals were designed by French luxury jeweller Chaumet and are set with a piece of iron taken from the Eiffel Tower during its renovation in the 20th Century. However, British diver Yasmin Harper, who won Team GB's first medal of the Games, was among the athletes to notice her medal was showing signs of "tarnishing".Paris 2024 organisers said any damaged medals will be replaced and the French Mint told AFP it has received 220 such requests - equivalent to four percent of the total awarded."The French Mint [Monnaie de Paris] has replaced some of them and is continuing its replacement operation at the request of the athletes," it said in a statement.Harper, who won women's 3m synchronised springboard bronze with partner Scarlett Mew Jensen, said later in the Games she had noticed "small bits of tarnishing".That came after American skateboarder Nyjah Huston criticised the quality of his medal, posting a video of the bronze he won in the men's street skateboarding that appeared discoloured and chipped.A Paris 2024 spokesperson said at the time it was working closely with the Monnaie de Paris to understand the cause of the damage and promised "damaged medals will be systematically replaced and engraved in an identical way to the originals".

Chris Eubank Sr issues honest plea to son as Conor Benn rematch looms

The British boxing icon shocked the world after he attended his son's fight with Benn - but has now offered his verdict amid talks of a potential sequel Chris Eubank Sr believes his son 'got away with it' and insists he is able to make money 'out of other things' amid talks of a potential Conor Benn sequel. Eubank Jr finally went head-to-head with Benn back in April after years of trading barbs online. In an epic back-and-forth dust-up at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London, Eubank Jr would eventually go on to get his hand raised on points. The event was not without drama though. ‌ At the official weigh-ins, Eubank Jr failed to make weight after coming in in first at 160.2lb before weighing 160.05lb at his second attempt and was therefore forced to pay Benn £375,000. That said, on the day of the fight, he avoided another hefty fine after coming in under the 170lb limit. ‌ Ahead of the contest, Eubank Sr had slammed the fight and believed his son was 'killing himself' in order to make the 160lb limit. The 58-year-old shocked the world on fight night after turning up to support his son. A little over a month on from the first encounter, Sr has shared his thoughts following reports that the pair will renew their rivalry again later this year. Speaking on his official YouTube channel, Sr addressed his son, saying: "So, the rematch is... Jr you have everything. You're rich. Those promoters... they hate you because they can never get close to anything that you do. The analogy I will use is that they are looking at you like you are a rocket, you have taken off. All the fuel burners and tanks have fallen back to Earth and you are now in space. They do not have the oxygen to be in the world you live in. They will do anything to live at that atmosphere. "Jr, you are rich, and you can make money out of other things. You said it, 'my dad is open and honest. He is not sneaky.' I am being open and honest. I am not being sneaky now. I am telling you of the state you were in. You got away with it. You have taken all the goods. "You have chastised them You have told them 'you do not talk when I am in this press conference. You do not talk. This is about me and my opponent.' Because, yes, you can always see that they are riding on your back or the backs of the fighters. Trying to make themselves something on the strengths of your work. The fact that you have put a stop to that, it hurts them in a way that you could never imagine. You have done it, son. Do not play a game with them, son. They do not have any scruples." Article continues below Benn remains desperate to secure a rematch with his long-time rival, with September 27 eyed as the potential date for a second fight, according to boxing promoter Eddie Hearn. "I know September 27, back at Spurs, is a date that he [Saudi financier Turki Alalshikh] has put forward and proposed. We're ready, really. We signed the contract for two fights," Hearn told Sky Sports. "Conor's just desperate to run it back. He feels like he's going to improve a lot going into that fight. [It was] his first fight in 14, 15 months, at 160lbs. Look, they provided us with just a night we'll never forget in so many ways. And both fighters deserve so much credit. We'd love to run it back."
