What tariffs? The Australian fashion brand taking on the US
New York is the city where dreams are made, according to the Jay-Z and Alicia Keys standard, Empire State of Mind. Australian fashion label Leo Lin is dreaming bigger than most, launching a pop-up store and taking over the windows at the New York flagship of department store Bloomingdale's this week.
While other brands experience sleepless nights, with the introduction of import tariffs by President Donald Trump of 10 per cent on Australian goods, and up to 145 per cent on items produced in China, Leo Lin's plans for growth continue one floral print dress at a time.
'Tariffs are an obvious challenge,' says Laura Good, head of brand at Leo Lin. 'The speed at which the tariffs were introduced has only solidified our position that this is our top priority as a business.'
Bloomingdale's, which also stocks Australian labels Alemais, Camilla and L'Idee, successfully tested Leo Lin's popularity at its Miami location in October, a month before the US election. Tariffs were not going to pour cold water on the partnership and the brand's move into the New York store, with the US comprising 38 per cent of its wholesale business.
'Our US growth has been on an upward trajectory for over 12 months,' Good says. 'When the tariffs were announced, we were already 80 per cent of the way through a major US expansion project.'

'The business has been focused on the US as a major growth market since we commenced international wholesale almost three years ago.'
Leo Lin launched originally as Leo + Lin, in Melbourne in 2017. Its founder, Leo Lin, had moved to Melbourne from China for his education when he was aged 16, staying on to explore fashion design and assemble his studio.
Early obvious influences such as Dior and John Galliano have disappeared, along with the plus sign, with the Leo Lin business moving to Sydney and finding its niche with bright, ultra-feminine dresses for special occasions.

Anthony Albanese is preparing for one of the most important diplomatic discussions of his career when he holds talks with Trump on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Canada on Tuesday, local time. But he faces an uphill battle to cut through with his message as Trump stares down domestic unrest and renewed conflict in the Middle East. 'Obviously, there are issues that the US president is dealing with at the moment, but I expect that we will be able to have a constructive engagement,' he said. 'We'll have a discussion as two friends should.' Albanese said he would raise tariffs and emphasise the importance of the AUKUS security pact, under which Australia is due to acquire nuclear-powered submarines from the US. Both men have already spoken on three occasions but Tuesday's arrangement is the first time they will meet in person. Australia is facing 10 per cent tariffs on goods exported to the US and — like all US trading partners except the UK — 50 per cent tariffs on aluminium and steel sent to America. Supplies of critical minerals and access to the Australian market for US beef could be used as bargaining chips during the talks. Albanese did not want to make 'grand declarations' prior to the meeting, but he reiterated he would put forward Australia's interests. 'It is also in the interests of the United States for Australia to be treated appropriately,' he said. Tensions between two countries have ebbed and flowed in recent days after Australia, alongside several other countries, was criticised by the US for sanctioning two Israeli government ministers. Australia has also pushed back against US calls to increase defence spending to 3.5 per cent of GDP, while Washington has launched a review into the AUKUS agreement to ensure it aligns with Trump's 'America first' agenda. The prime minister arrived in Seattle after holding bilateral talks in Fiji and was expected to leave for the G7 on Sunday. He used an event involving US business and technology leaders to sing the praises of 'free and fair trade' ahead of the tariff talks, hailing a $20 billion commitment from Amazon to expand its Australia data centre operations. Albanese is also expected to hold talks with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and other world leaders during the summit. He landed in America on the same day a controversial military parade commemorating the US army's 250th birthday took place on the other side of the country, in Washington DC. The event coincided with Trump's 79th birthday and represents the first such military parade in more than three decades. Millions of Americans across the nation gathered to protest the US president as part of 'No Kings' rallies held in major cities, while hordes also attended the parade in support of armed forces. Protest organisers accused Mr Trump of staging a 'made-for-TV display of dominance for his birthday' with the military parade, which falls on Flag Day — the date when the US flag was adopted by congress. Tens of thousands marched to Seattle's towering Space Needle as they chanted, 'no Trump, no KKK, no fascist USA'. For Stephany Simonelli, who donned a fake crown with a cross and a sash that read 'no kings', it was her first time taking part in a march or rally. 'This just felt absolutely imperative for democracy,' she told AAP. 'I'm really afraid for our country. We, in America, really need to step up and take a stand.'

Speaking to media, Mr Albanese also said he and the US President had 'scheduled' a meeting on the sidelines of the G7 in Canada after Mr Trump confirmed he would attend the summit. Pressure has been mounting on Mr Albanese to secure a carve out from sweeping US tariffs and shore up Washington's support for AUKUS after the Trump administration launched a review of the $368bn defence pact. Industry and Innovation Minister Tim Ayres said on Sunday the deal was 'not designed' to send a message to Mr Trump but that 'it certainly does underscore the depth of the economic and strategic and technological relationship' with the US. 'It's not just about trading in goods and services,' Senator Ayres told Sky News. 'It's about collaboration around science and research and development and in industrial terms.' He singled out AUKUS as 'offering opportunities for Australian and United States firms … to invest in each other's economy', highlighting it as 'a real counterpoint to the position that the United States has adopted around tariff announcements'. 'They are not the act of a friend, as has been said repeatedly by me and my colleagues,' Senator Ayres said. 'They are not in Australia's interest, but they're not in the United States' interest either. 'Australian steel, for example, exported to the United States, feeds into American supply chains and supports competitive industry that provides good jobs for American workers. 'Why on Earth would anybody want to make Australian steel in the United States more expensive? 'That's what the tariff measures do.' He said Mr Albanese would be putting that 'position directly to the President of the United States' when they meet next week. 'But the Amazon announcement does underscore how vital the direct economic relationship really is,' Senator Ayres said. At his Seattle press conference announcing the deal, Mr Albanese said he would raise tariffs and AUKUS with Mr Trump. 'And I'm sure that when I have the opportunity to have discussions with President Trump, we will speak about the important economic relationship between our two countries, which is in the interests of both Australia and the United States.' Under the deal, Amazon has committed to pumping cash into developing data centres in Melbourne and Sydney over the next five years, focusing on storage, networking, analytics, and secure services supporting cloud and AI. The firm will build renewable energy sources to support its operations. Speaking alongside Mr Albanese, Amazon Web Services chief executive Matt Garman dismissed concerns Australia's grid lacked the power needed for AI. 'I think definitely the explosion of AI requires a lot of power, so that's one of the things we're thinking about,' Mr Garman told reporters. 'I think here in the United States, we see nuclear as part of that portfolio. 'Our investments in Australia are wind and solar, but I think depending on the local setup and economies and other things, it's a global question, but there's no question that we will continue to need more and more power going forward.'
