Vatican Releases First Photo of Pope Francis Since He Was Hospitalized
The Vatican on Sunday released the first photo of Pope Francis since he was hospitalized 31 days ago, showing him facing the altar in the small chapel that is part of his private suite at a hospital in Rome.
Francis celebrated Mass with other priests for the first time since he was admitted to the Policlinico A. Gemelli hospital, the Vatican said. He continued his physiotherapy — both motor and respiratory — on Sunday, and he seemed to be 'benefiting from it,' the Vatican said.
The pontiff is shown in the photo wearing a purple stole, reflective of this being the season of Lent.
Earlier in the day, balloons in the Vatican colors of yellow and white were held aloft by dozens of children who had gathered in the square outside the hospital and chanted 'Papa Francesco' and cheered 'Viva la Pace' — hurray for peace.
Many held up signs, hoping that the pope might peek out of the windows of his 10th-floor hospital suite to see their art. They offered encouragement, wishing that the pope get well soon. One boy with a boisterous group of blue-and-yellow capped 'castorini,' or beavers, as children too young to be Cub Scouts are known in Italy, held a sign that said 'Ciao Papa Cesco, I love you a lot.' Plant of Coca-Cola maker suspended for potential contamination in Brazil
By Lisandra Paraguassu BRASILIA (Reuters) -A plant owned by Brazilian soft drink firm Solar, which produces for Coca-Cola, had a fault in its cooling system detected, leading production and bottling to be suspended as a precautionary measure, Brazil's government said on Wednesday. Production was halted after authorities established a liquid used in the cooling process had come in contact with products being manufactured, Brazil's agriculture ministry said, in reference to an on-site inspection of the plant in Ceara state. The liquid in question contains food-grade alcohol that does not pose a high health risk and does not contain toxic substances, the ministry added in a statement. All of the products that may have been compromised remain in the company's inventory, Agriculture Minister Carlos Favaro told a press conference in Brasilia, adding that there was no risk that the affected products could have reached supermarkets. According to the ministry, the production suspension will be maintained until Solar enforces the necessary corrections and proves the elimination of all risks in the production process, which may occur as early as today. Samples from about 9 million liters of soft drinks await laboratory analysis, which should be concluded in five days, the ministry said. Solar and Coca-Cola did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Canadian wildfire smoke spreads across a third of US
By Patrick Wingrove and Rich McKay (Reuters) -Smoke from wildfires burning in three Canadian provinces covered about a third of the U.S. on Wednesday, forecasters said, but had little effect on air quality except in New England and parts of New York state and the Midwest. The haze, which brought hazardous levels of particulate pollution to Minnesota a day earlier, stretched from the Dakotas through the Ohio Valley, into the Northeast and as far south as Georgia, according to the National Weather Service's Weather Prediction Center in College Park, Maryland. It was especially thick in New York and New England. "Much of the smoke is aloft in the upper atmosphere, so in a lot of areas there aren't air quality issues," said the National Weather Service's Marc Chenard. "But there are air quality issues as far south as New York and Connecticut where it's thicker and in the lower atmosphere." Scores of wildfires have spread across Canada since the start of May. More than 212 active fires were burning in the country as of Tuesday afternoon, half of which were out of control, according to the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre. So far, 2 million hectares (4.9 million acres) have burned. Most of the fires were in the west-central provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta. Yang Liu, a professor of environmental health at Emory University in Atlanta, said infants, the elderly and other frail people were most susceptible to the smoke, but emphasized that everyone is at risk. "It will affect everyone at some level, all walks of life," Liu said. "It's bad." He said the smoke is comprised of small particles, some of them toxic, that are smaller than 1/40th of the width of a human hair and can get into the lungs and even dissolve into the bloodstream. One of the worst spots for air quality in the U.S. Northeast on Wednesday morning was Williamstown, Massachusetts, near the state's borders with Vermont and New York. It registered a "very unhealthy" reading of 228, according to IQAir, a website that monitors air quality around the world. An air quality rating of below 50 is considered to be "good," and readings between 100 and 300 are deemed "unhealthy" to "very unhealthy," while higher than that is considered "hazardous," according to the website. The ratings in other parts of the U.S. Northeast were much lower, with New York City's standing at 56 on Wednesday morning and Washington's registering at 55. Air quality levels in some parts of the Midwest had also improved on Wednesday morning. Ely, near Minnesota's border with Manitoba, registered a "moderate" reading of 65, down from 336 on Tuesday. Minneapolis, which had ranked as third-worst city in the world for air quality on Tuesday, with a 168 reading, was registering at 96.

In May 2024, Neuralink registered a clinical study in the U.S. government trials database, aiming to enroll three participants. The company is also expanding its trial footprint internationally, having received approval from Health Canada in November 2024 to recruit six patients for a study testing the device's safety and efficacy in enabling cursor movement through brain activity. Neuralink is currently conducting an early feasibility study called the Precise Robotically Implanted Brain-Computer Interface, with three participants implanted.
