Malaysian rail operator halves fare on commuter train routes to make up for delays
KTM Komuter passengers in the Klang Valley will enjoy a 50 per cent discount on all ticket categories, including concession fares on June 3 and 4, following significant delays owing to the ongoing signalling system upgrade.
Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd (KTMB) apologised for the inconvenience on June 1.
It said the disruption has affected electric train and Komuter services since work began on the stretch between Kepong and Salak Selatan stations on May 31.
'To alleviate the inconvenience, we are offering a 50 per cent fare discount for all KTM Komuter Klang Valley routes on June 3 and 4,' it said.
The ongoing upgrade has caused several electric train services to be delayed by more than 120 minutes.
Among the affected routes are KL Sentral-Butterworth, KL Sentral-Padang Besar, Segamat-Padang Besar, and Segamat-Butterworth.
KTM Komuter services have also been affected, specifically on the Pulau Sebang-Batu Caves-Pulau Sebang and Tanjung Malim-KL Sentral-Tanjung Malim routes.
KTMB said affected electric train passengers, including those stranded at KL Sentral station, were provided with drinking water and light refreshments.
'Delay notifications were also sent via text message.
'Station staff were deployed at key locations to assist and manage passenger flow during the disruptions,' it added.
The signalling upgrade, expected to be completed by June 2, is part of the Klang Valley Double Track Phase 1 project aimed at improving the safety, efficiency and capacity of rail operations.

US imposes visa bans on India travel agents for facilitating illegal migration

PHOTO: REUTERS WASHINGTON – The US State Department said on May 19 that it was imposing visa restrictions on owners and other staff of India-based travel agencies that it says knowingly facilitate illegal migration to the United States. An unspecified number of unnamed people linked to travel agencies in India were being hit with visa bans under the Immigration and Nationality Act based on information gathered by the US mission to India, department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce said in a statement. Washington often issues visa bans without publishing the names of those targeted. 'We will continue to take steps to impose visa restrictions against owners, executives and senior officials of travel agencies to cut off alien smuggling networks,' Ms Bruce said, without detailing how the travel agents had facilitated illegal migration. The move comes amid President Donald Trump's broad crackdown on migration to the United States and efforts to deport undocumented immigrants in the country. The US Embassy in New Delhi has repeatedly posted on its social media sites a warning to Indian nationals visiting the United States not to remain in the country beyond their authorised period of stay, saying they will face deportation and a permanent ban from entering the country for doing so.
