Loyola Chicago wins 72-62 over Kent State in NIT quarterfinals

CHICAGO (AP) — Miles Rubin had 18 points in Loyola Chicago's 72-62 win against Kent State on Wednesday night in the NIT quarterfinals.
Loyola Chicago will play Chattanooga in the semifinals at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis on Tuesday.
Rubin added nine rebounds for the Ramblers (25-11). Jayden Dawson scored 13 points while going 5 of 14 (3 for 11 from 3-point range). Sheldon Edwards shot 3 for 8 from beyond the arc and 3 of 3 from the free-throw line to finish with 12 points.
Jalen Sullinger finished with 12 points for the Golden Flashes (24-12). Jamal Sumlin added 11 points for Kent State. Delrecco Gillespie had 10 points and 12 rebounds.
Loyola Chicago took the lead with 1:32 remaining in the first half and did not give it up. Rubin led his team in scoring with 10 points in the first half to help put them ahead 37-33 at the break. Loyola Chicago used a 7-0 run in the second half to build a 46-35 lead.

49ers embrace urgency after disappointing 2024 season
Associated Press SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — The vibes were off from the start of last season for the San Francisco 49ers. Contract disputes provided a cloud over the team throughout the spring and summer, the Super Bowl hangover and a third straight short offseason sapped some energy and a lack of roster turnover led to some staleness around the Niners. Those factors and a bevy of injuries turned a Super Bowl contender into a 6-11 also-ran, leading coach Kyle Shanahan to deliver a blunt message at the end of the season about what needed to change in 2025. 'I felt guys weren't ready to come back,' Shanahan said about the 2024 season. 'I understood that. But I told them how I won't really understand it this year. Not that that was right or wrong, but I couldn't comprehend it. We're off five weeks earlier. We all know how disappointed we are and a lot of us have played a lot of football here. But we're going to have a team that doesn't know what we've done in the past or how you guys have earned a lot of stuff, we need to show them.' As the 49ers begin their final week of the offseason program on Monday, the change has been palpable. The team was able to resolve its major contract questions early in the offseason by reaching extensions with quarterback Brock Purdy, linebacker Fred Warner and tight end George Kittle without any drama or acrimony. The attendance for the voluntary offseason program was high with most of the key players on hand to help teach the rookies and other newcomers the standard for how the 49ers operate. Star left tackle Trent Williams was one of the few notable players not on hand for the first week of on-field practices but was back in town last week. Shanahan stressed the importance of showing up in April and the players listened, leading to the successful spring. Shanahan said he didn't have to make any requests after the season-ending meeting and the players said there was no need for a group discussion about making sure everyone was bought in for this season. 'I didn't think we had to do all that,' Warner said. 'Kyle made a point of that at the end of last season when he said how important it was to be back for this phase because of how last season went, and we knew what we were getting ourselves into with a whole new group, a lot of young players. We all made the decision on our own to be back here." The urgency that may have been lacking at times in 2024 is back this offseason as the Niners want to avoid any sort of repeat of last year's disappointment. San Francisco had lost in the NFC title games following the 2021 and 2022 seasons and then fell just short in the Super Bowl in the 2023 season, losing the title game in overtime to the Kansas City Chiefs. Those deep runs led to reduced time off with some players choosing rest over rushing back to be on hand for the entire offseason program. That was not the case this spring as the team plans to incorporate several new starters on both sides of the ball following a roster purge in March. 'When your season ends and you're not making the playoffs, your desire to be back in the building and to get that taste out of your mouth, I think is expedited,' Kittle said. 'Guys want to be back for it. When you're playing in the middle of February, you kind of need an extra month. That's why a lot of guys don't show up to phase two or stuff like that. But there is an importance of phase one, the team building stuff. Kyle wanted us to be back. A.J. Greer is making his Stanley Cup Final debut for the Florida Panthers in Game 3
Associated Press FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — A.J. Greer is back in for the Florida Panthers in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final on Monday night after missing the first two in the series against the Edmonton Oilers because of injury. Coach Paul Maurice confirmed Greer would return on Florida's fourth line. Jesper Boqvist comes out of the lineup to make room for Greer, who will be making his first career appearance in the final. 'It's definitely a dream come true, but I'm not really trying to focus on that,' Greer said after the team's morning skate. 'It's another game for me and I'm just trying to enjoy it, but I'm not trying to associate anything bigger than just my next shift, really.' Greer, 28, gutted through injury for part of this playoff run before exiting in the Eastern Conference final against Carolina when it was clear he wasn't healthy enough to stay in. Maurice lauded Greer for his lack of selfishness and an abundance of self-awareness to understand when the pain threshold was reached and do what's best for the team. 'Good on him for recognizing that,' Maurice said. 'We were fortunate that we were able to heal A.J. to a place that he's really confident in what he's doing. ... He's been such a positive part of what we do.' Greer almost wasn't here at all. A little over four years ago, he was languishing in the minors and almost giving up on his NHL dream. 'I was pretty much 24 hours away from just calling it, going to Europe and trying to just get a paycheck, trying to squeeze out every dollar that I can out of this sport and then live my life,' Greer said. 'Fortunately, things kind of bounced my way.' Greer was essentially a throw-in as part of a trade to the New Jersey Devils that got the New York Islanders Kyle Palmieri and Travis Zajac, who helped them reach the East final. Greer — who was a second-round pick of Colorado in 2015 and played 37 games for the Avalanche from 2016-18 — developed some confidence with the American Hockey League's Utica Comets and cracked the Devils' roster a few times. Agent Philippe Lecavalier challenged Greer over whether he wanted to be an AHL player or adapt his style to be a role player in the NHL. 'You could say I wanted to try to prove him wrong,' Greer said. 'I kind of just went day by day, got better mentally, physically and matured with my game. I understood if I wanted to ever play in the NHL again, the way I have to play and the things I have to do — and I got a chance, so I'm very grateful for that. It all led up to here.' At 6-foot-3 and 209 pounds, Greer has been a physical force for Florida as the Panthers try to repeat as champions. He is one of the newcomers, along with their leading scorer in the final, Nate Schmidt, and teammates are happy to have Greer back. 'He's a pain to play against,' Evan Rodrigues said. 'He's a guy that can change the momentum of a game. He's heavy on the forecheck. For the most part, I don't think you want to get hit by him. He's a really good presence for us. And he chips in offensively. He lays the body. Just overall a pain the neck to play against.' That came with time and trial and error as Greer learned how to have an impact with limited ice time. This spring brought his first taste of the Stanley Cup playoffs, and he has made the most of his nearly eight minutes a game. 'My game's grown, especially this year,' Greer said.
