Former England coach says Australia humbling in Las Vegas did ‘a lot of damage'
His side's march to the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup had a surge of interest in the women's game and led indirectly to a number of star England players landing historic contracts in the fully-professional NRL.
Richards, who announced his departure from the England job in an emotional press conference in the wake of their last-four defeat to New Zealand, hopes the chastening experience in the US will act as a timely wake-up call for the domestic game.
'Social media-wise, it did a lot of damage,' said Richards of the Las Vegas clash, which was bolted onto an international programme that also saw the start of the men's NRL season and the Super League clash between Wigan and Warrington.
'I don't think it was a true reflection of where we are at. I'm not saying we're anywhere close to beating the Aussies, but I also don't believe there is a 90-point gap.
'Internally it didn't harm us, but it made us question whether we are resting a little bit, and if we need to dig in a little bit deeper. I think the women's game is still in a good place, but we don't hide from the fact that there is still a lot to be done.'
After leaving the international set-up, Richards returned to St Helens where he succeeded Matty Smith as women's joint head coach alongside Derek Hardman for the start of the current campaign.
He will lead Saints out at Wembley on Saturday as they bid for their fifth successive women's Challenge Cup win against Wigan, in a match Richards hopes will serve as a timely reminder of the strength of the English women's game.
While Saints have only emphasised their domestic dominance in recent seasons, Wigan, who are contesting the final for the first time, have surged to prominence after an ambitious overhaul led by club legend Denis Betts.
'The group didn't need any motivation – we always ask, are you becoming complacent? Are you happy with what you've done so far? Have you got the hunger to kick on? – and the girls have proved that,' said Richards.
'Throw Wigan into the mix and that just excites everyone. When you're at a club like St Helens it doesn't go unnoticed, it's the one you always look for on the fixture list, and the fact we've got them at Wembley is huge for us.
'I think it's also massive for the women's game. We have had the same teams at the top of Super League and we need to expand that. This is an opportunity and a responsibility for us to go out and put on a real showcase for the women's game.'

Women's Super League: Saints beat Barrow to go top
St Helens moved to the top of Women's Super League by dominating Barrow to edge above previous leaders Wigan Warriors on won 40-6 at sixth-placed Barrow for their third victory in the opening four games of the leading by just two points at half-time, St Helens scored six times in the second half without on Saturday, York Valkyrie beat Leigh Leopards 26-0 to move level on points with their fourth-placed opponents and third-placed Huddersfield can regain top spot if they win at Huddersfield on Sunday. York Valkyrie ease past Leigh without reply After a tense and nervy start between Leigh and York it was the away side that managed to get the first points on the board, 30 minutes into the first made the most of a scrum 35 metres from the goal-line and worked the ball out to the right where Izzy Bibby was able to take the ball across the line for a than ten minutes later, they added their second try as Eboni Partington made it over the line after Leigh were penalised for a high tackle just five metres got off to the perfect start in the second half as Sinead Peach powered through defenders and over the line, Williamson adding the conversion after missing her prior two Andrade utilised some smart footwork to touch down for four more points and Valkyrie added another try on the hour mark through Agnes Wood, with Williamson converting both.

Arsenal sent Foden transfer message as Man City accept defeat on Grealish exit
Former Premier League striker Tony Cascarino believes Arsenal should try and sign Manchester City star Phil Foden this summer, while Jack Grealish could depart on loan Arsenal have been urged to sign Phil Foden this summer, with Pep Guardiola revamping his Manchester City squad. City spent big in the January transfer window on the likes of Omar Marmoush, Nico Gonzalez and Abdukodir Khusanov, while Kevin De Bruyne has been released. Guardiola has also signed four new players already this summer, with Tijjani Reijnders, Rayan Cherki, Rayan Ait-Nouri all joining City. Jack Grealish is among those expected to leave City, having been left out of their squad for the Club World Cup. However, City are struggling to find buyers for the 29-year-old, who is earning £300,000-a-week at the Etihad and it has been reported that they are now willing to send him out on loan and pay a percentage of his salary. The likes of Newcastle and Napoli have both been mooted as potential destinations for Grealish, but one club that have been told not to sign him are Arsenal. Former Premier League striker Tony Cascarino believes the Gunners should make a move for Foden instead. When asked if Grealish would be a good signing for Arsenal, Casarino told talkSPORT: "No, I think Foden's way more likely. Obviously Arteta worked at Man City with Phil Foden and for whatever reason, I'm sure we'll find out down the line, Phil Foden just hasn't been the player we know him to be this season. "From where he was the Football Writers' Player of the Year the season before, his performances this year have just not justified that. But all that's happening at City and all the spending that's gone on, I wouldn't be surprised if Foden is allowed to go somewhere. "Whether City let him go Arsenal, I don't know, but they let Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko go there. If Arsenal could get him, I think Arteta would really consider that, yeah. Foden is only 26, so he's still got a lot of football in him. "For whatever reason he's had a disappointing year, and I'm sure Arteta would know what's happened and gone on behind the scenes at City, absolutely. And I know some Arsenal fans will say, 'But he's had a poor year', but Phil Foden's a very gifted footballer. A terrific player. "He doesn't want to go into the next season being in and out of a team when there's a World Cup in the summer. Otherwise he won't play, no chance. And what have City spent in the last two windows? They must be close to £300million." Foden scored 27 goals and provided 13 assists in the 2023-24 campaign, but managed just 16 goal contributions the following season. And Foden revealed last month that he had been struggling throughout the campaign with personal issues and injuries. "It's been a frustrating season for me," said Foden. "I've had a lot of things going on off the pitch mentally. It's one of them, sometimes there's things in life that are bigger than football. This season I've struggled a little bit. "Hopefully come next year I can get my head mentally right and get back where I left off the season before, because I know what I'm capable of doing and the quality I have."
