Philippine President expresses gratitude as UAE releases 115 prisoners during Ramadan, Eid
Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Saturday expressed his gratitude to President Sheikh Mohamed for releasing 115 Filipino inmates during the holy month of Ramadan and Eid Al Fitr.
Marcos thanked the UAE for the timely pardon, noting 'it brings hope to the convicts' families and signifies the UAE's commitment to humanitarian values.'
In a statement, Marcos said: 'The UAE Ambassador in Manila has personally informed us that for this season's Ramadan and Eid Al Fitr, no less than 115 convicted Filipinos have been set free. We recall how the UAE pardoned 143 Filipinos for last year's Eid Al Adha and 220 on the occasion of the UAE National Day.
'This gesture is a reflection of our countries' special partnership, as embodied in the nearly one million Filipinos who have made the UAE their home,' he added, noting: 'The royal pardon also underscores the importance of compassion and second chances in the spirit of Ramadan.'
Marcos said the UAE Embassy in Manila directly communicated with the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) – Office of the Middle East and African Affairs (OMEAA) on March 28, informing the DFA of the royal pardon and requesting assistance in relaying the names of those pardoned.
Meanwhile, the Philippine missions in the UAE also expressed their gratitude to the UAE government, underscoring: 'This act of generosity and compassion exemplifies the true spirit of mercy during the sacred occasion of Ramadan and the values of unity and goodwill.'
'(We) remain fully committed to ensuring the welfare of Filipino nationals in the UAE. (We also) stand ready to extend the necessary assistance to facilitate the safe and expeditious return of those granted clemency,' they added.
