Nortjé: Bulls in full Test mode for crucial URC semi-final against Sharks

Bulls captain Ruan Nortjé has acknowledged the mental and physical challenge posed by facing the Sharks in the upcoming United Rugby Championship (URC) semi-final at Loftus Versfeld.
Despite the Sharks' dramatic victory over Munster in the quarter-finals, Nortjé wants his side to remain focused on the task ahead, highlighting the importance of resilience and executing their gameplan on Saturday (6.15pm kick-off).
'When we reach the play-offs, we try to always get ourselves in the headspace of Test-match level preparation,' said Nortjé ahead of the clash.
'We had the same mentality against Edinburgh, and it will be more of the same this weekend. The fact that it is a South African derby just adds more fuel, excitement, and tension. So, we have to ensure that we are mentally prepared and get our game plan ready for what awaits.'
Nortjé added that they cannot afford to switch off for even one minute or concede a yellow card. He highlighted lapses in concentration against Edinburgh, which allowed the Scottish club to mount a strong attack in the first half when the Bulls were down to 14 men.
The Bulls trailed 21–8 at one stage, but their fightback underscored their championship credentials. However, he warned that they must be wary of the Sharks' scrum, which could provide a potent attacking platform.
'The Sharks were definitely brilliant scrum-wise last weekend. I think that's a massive part of what brought them through that game, so I must give them credit — the whole front row. It's definitely going to be a massive battle at the set-piece.
"We can only prepare as well as we can and ensure we are ready when Saturday comes. We must be composed and make swift changes on the field — be ready for anything, and expect anything.'
'We are blessed to play in another semi-final. We know there are a lot of other teams that would also want to be in this position, and that are capable of being in the semi-final.'
Apart from the forwards, he pointed to the Sharks' half-backs, Jaden and Jordan Hendrikse, as major threats, along with inside centre André Esterhuizen as their primary strike-runner.
He knows the Durbanites thrive on unpredictability and moments of individual brilliance, making it essential for the Bulls to stay composed and disciplined.
Nortjé stressed the need to trust their systems, rely on their set-piece strength, and not allow the Sharks' high tempo and creativity to disrupt their game plan. Maintaining focus and emotional control will be key to securing a place in the final.

But my main focus is to use whatever opportunity I get to play and keep doing what I do and keep improving every day. 'So, whatever happens in the background is just part of the rumours that have been created. But for me, in football, there comes a time where you want to achieve greater things – maybe play for the so-called big teams or make big moves.' So, with that being said, where should he go next? For many, the logical answer would be Mamelodi Sundowns. At Chloorkop, Basadien would land in a very stable situation, where every player knows what is expected of them and clear goals are set. While Sundowns supporters are passionate about their club, they're not as vocal and opinionated as those from other clubs. If he struggles to settle in, they would be patient enough to give him time to get used to his new surroundings. The same can't be said about fans of the Soweto clubs. While Pirates are more settled as a football operation, Chiefs are not. The club have just finished outside of the top half for a second successive season and are in desperate need of open-heart surgery. Kaizer Chiefs would be completely the wrong move for a player who is starting to make a name for himself on the international stage. And we all know how quickly Chiefs supporters can turn on players who don't hit the ground running. Basadien must think carefully now. He's not a youngster anymore, and this next move could define the rest of his career. A switch to Sundowns makes sense if he wants silverware and structure, but he'll have to fight for his place every week. Pirates might offer him that balance – game time and prestige – while Chiefs, honestly, look like a gamble right now. Whatever he chooses, the ball's at his feet. And in South African football, that's a rare kind of power. Picture: Steve Haag Sports/Gallo Images Bulls boss Jake White has urged his players to put their Springbok selection out of their minds when they play in their United Rugby Championship (URC) semi-final against the Sharks at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday (kick-off 6.15pm). A total 54 players were named in Rassie Erasmus' first Bok squad of the season which kicks off on 28 June against the Barbarians, followed by the Castle Lager Incoming Series. It's an unchanged group from the year's second alignment camp in Cape Town. Included are 10 Bulls players, all named in the squad to play in the URC semi-final. Only the Sharks have more players in the squad (11). White warns against 'trials' mentality 'It's like trials tomorrow,' White said. 'One of the messages I've given the players: 'I please don't want you to play like it's trials. I want you to play like it's a team.' 'Because often what happens in these situations is whenever you announce a team before a big game… There's 54 guys, they all want to be Springboks. They all want to be in the first round. 'They know they will compete against the guys they are playing against tomorrow. It doesn't matter what I say, they know this is an opportunity in front of selectors – in front of the public – for them to stake a claim.' Still, the coach said his job was to make his charges understand the play-off fixture was not about individuals. 'I said to them in the changeroom today, they've been picked on what they did the last 18 weeks. It's got nothing to do with how they have to do tomorrow. 'They are not going to do anything tomorrow that is going to make them put their hand up. They've put their hand up to be picked in the 54-man squad by what they've done for the last couple of months. I just want them to continue doing that.' Bulls out for third time lucky, Sharks want to stake claim The Sharks reach the semi-final stages of the URC for the first time, while this is the third time for the Bulls. The Pretoria outfit have never won the trophy and will have the mentality of righting wrongs of the past, while the Sharks intend to stake their claim. The Sharks have beaten the Bulls twice in the URC this season (20–17 in Durban in December and 29–19 at Loftus in February). That means two of the Bulls' four defeats in the campaign came against the Sharks, who also won the SA shield for the first time. It's been a breakout season for the Sharks but White and his charges will want to become the second SA team to win the URC after the Stormers.

KZN Treasury banking on Comrades Marathon to give local tourism a boost
DURBAN - KwaZulu-Natal's Treasury Department has described Comrades Marathon as a major boost for the province's economy. Thousands have booked accommodation in Pietermaritzburg and Durban ahead of the marathon. The race will start in Pietermaritzburg and end at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban. Finance MEC Francious Rodgers said the province always gets excited to host this event. 'It's obviously one of those really big events that we are proud of. It has a history in the province of KwaZulu-Natal, and it's not a South African event, it's an international event.' He said the hospitality industry will do business this weekend. 'And if you try and to get accommodation in Durban and Pietermaritzburg over the weekend, it's fully covered, booked, and that's exactly what we want.'
