Enzo Maresca blames over-celebrating Champions League qualification for Chelsea's slow start in Conference League final - before Blues bounced back to beat Real Betis

Daily Mail4 days ago

Enzo Maresca has blamed Chelsea's post-match celebrations against Nottingham Forest for their slow start in the UEFA Conference League final against Real Betis.
The Blues completed a historic set of European trophies after beating their Spanish counterparts 4-1 on Wednesday night - having fought back from one-goal down.
Though Chelsea were electric in the second-half, their performance before the break was lacklustre and resulted in full-back Malo Gusto being substituted at half-time.
After the match, Maresca discussed Chelsea's slow start and attributed it to their celebrations after beating Forest and qualifying for the Champions League.
Speaking to TNT Sports, Maresca said: 'I think we approached the game in the wrong way. I expected it a bit because the happiness was too much after Nottingham.
'So we struggled a bit to start but in the second-half we were much better'.
"The fans, they deserved that" 👏

Pressed further on the issues his side faced, he explained: 'The happiness and a little bit of tiredness. We had 48 hours less than them.
'They played Friday for nothing. We played on Sunday for a big target. But in the second half we were much better'.
The Blues boss was then quizzed on the decision to take off Gusto - and replace him with club captain Reece James - at the interval.
Maresca said: 'Malo is one of my favourite players. The problem is, the first goal that we conceded was because he missed the pass.
'But they are young and they don't understand that if you make a mistake, you have to continue. For me, he is a top player'.
It was Betis who opened the scoring, in the ninth minute of the match, after a well-taken strike by Abdessamad Ezzalzouli flew beyond Filip Jorgensen.
Enzo Maresca 's Blues battled away for a response in the remainder of the first-half - however were left frustrated as they failed to find an answer.
Malo Gusto was singled out as one of Chelsea 's struggling stars and was replaced by club captain Reece James in a bid to claw themselves back into the game.
Though it took longer than they would've liked, they did exactly that in the 65th minute after Enzo Fernandez nodded home from a floated Cole Palmer cross.
The momentum swung in Chelsea's favour and just six minutes later they were ahead as Palmer once again crafted a goal out of nothing and gifted a six-yard header for Nicolas Jackson to finish.

Ukraine destroys Russian nuclear bombers in airbase attacks

Ukraine destroyed Russian strategic bombers in a mass drone attack on airfields across Russia, sources have claimed. The operation, carried out by Ukraine's security service, appears to have targeted at least two airfields thousands of miles from the frontline. 'Enemy strategic bombers are burning en masse in Russia — this is the result of a special operation by the SBU,' an SBU source told the Kyiv Independent. Footage from Olenya air base, in the Arctic, shows rows of Russian strategic and nuclear bombers burning. Russia moved its bombers there in order to get them out of range of Ukraine's drones. The attack raises questions about the range at which Ukraine can carry out sophisticated attacks, with some reports suggesting drones were launched from trucks inside Russia. It comes after a wave of bombings targeting Russian railway lines overnight, which derailed trains and killed at least seven people.

Sunderland promotion bonuses revealed as Jobe Bellingham and co share out huge £7.75m for reaching Premier League

A STUNNING £7.75million was split by Sunderland's promotion winners for reaching the Prem. Skipper Dan Neil and cult hero Luke O'Nien finished top of the table for appearances and will pick up more than £500,000 each. 2 2 The system is based on the number of games played in the campaign under Wearsiders' boss Regis Le Bris, who had his own personal jackpot. Each player received shares in the windfall. Starters were given four per game, subs received two and non-playing men on the bench got one. Neil and O'Nien, injured in the 2-1 Wembley play-off final win over Sheffield United, made 48 and 49 first-team starts respectively to qualify for the highest return. Most of the squad played a large chunk of games, so will earn between £400,000 and £500,000. That is a large boost to pay packets, with young Chris Rigg, 17, in line for around £400k - which is roughly the same as his basic salary. Even after tax, that should mean a terrific bonus for the players who took the Black Cats to glory. The total available in the initial bonus system for the playing staff was £8m if they finished top. Addicks only handed out £750,000 in bonuses among the players on a similar pro rata basis. SunSport revealed on Sunday that Roma are poised to make a shock move for Sunderland skipper Neil. The Italian giants are keen on the hard-running midfielder who is aware of their interest and a £15million deal could be thrashed out. Neil's move would rock Sunderland, though, who are preparing to lose teenager Bellingham. The 19-year-old is already talking to clubs in Germany.
