Controversial mural sparks wave of complaints as business faces fine
A confronting mural showing a bound and gagged woman has sparked outrage, with a Melbourne council receiving over 1,000 complaints in just two days.
Los Angeles-based street artist Lauren YS was commissioned to paint the mural on a building near Cecil Street in the hip inner city suburb of Fitzroy.
But City of Yarra mayor Stephen Jolly said the mural had broken planning laws and the business behind the mural would be fined as result.
'They don't have a planning permit, they'll be approached about that, they'll be dealt with in the normal way,' Mayor Jolly told ABC Radio Melbourne Breakfast.
He said the council had received more than 1,000 emails in the last 48 hours from local residents as well as interested parties from around the country.
Collective Shout, an NGO against domestic violence and sexual exploitation of women, led a campaign against the mural, but many locals backed the artwork.
'I don't know if sexualised images in front of children's faces is a good way of stirring controversy,' one man told ABC Radio Melbourne Breakfast.
However, another man said: 'I think it's representing a culture that a lot of people don't know about, shibari (Japanese rope bondage) is a beautiful artform that brings intimacy in people.'
Lauran YS said in a statement the work was 'about empowerment and queer selfhood'.
The artist said the location was chosen to avoid foot traffic and claimed there was a much higher trafficked street close by 'with synthetic boobs in the window'.
The mural was shared by the artist on Instagram, stating the piece was a 'parting gift for Melbourne/for the dolls'.
In a statement shared on social media, Collective Shout said the artwork 'eroticised violence against women'.
Movement director Melinda Reist said: 'This is porn-themed, adult sexual fetishes imposed on a non-consenting audience.
'It depicts the public humiliation of women at a time when we're expressing concern from rising rates of violence against women.'
Yarra Residents' Collective spokesman Adam Promnitz agreed: 'While that artwork may be great in a private space, in the street it is the wrong time and wrong place.
'Families and members of the public should not be subject to X-rated artwork without consent.'
The mural has subsequently been defaced by another graffiti artist.

After accepting the suspended sentence, it has been claimed that James has moved on from the lawyers who represented him and hired a new legal team. The lawyers have not been named and it marks his third legal team since the May 5 assault in Spain. A legal source told the publication: 'The individual who was convicted has appointed a new barrister and solicitor.' James has been ordered to attend a rehabilitation course aimed at addressing gender violence, and his new lawyers may work with him on the terms of this course. MailOnline contacted James' representatives for comment at the time. Court papers obtained by The Sun showed James - who raked in £5,000-a-week last year - was only required to pay Nicoline a shockingly low £250 in damages. James has reportedly insisted he's 'feeling good' as he took to the stage at Olivia's La Cala restaurant in Costa del Sol, Spain - close to where he attacked his ex Nicoline. According to The Mirror, James arrived looking glum-faced but was soon working the room with punters prior to his set where he was overheard telling them he was 'feeling good and looking forward to getting on stage'. The TV personality also shared a video on his social media, looking in very high spirits while dancing and singing with the crowd. He was welcomed on stage by the owner of the venue, former TOWIE star Elliot Wright, who spoke of their 'many trials and tribulations', the publication claimed. James' ex-girlfriend Nicoline was left with cuts and bruises to her neck, arms, hand and leg after the fall, according to a court filing. Prosecutors were reportedly pushing to charge James with wounding, which carries a jail sentence of up to nine months. However, the ex-reality star eventually agreed to the lesser offence of mistreatment as part of a plea deal. James was handed a six-month suspended sentence and a restraining order that prevents him from contacting Nicoline for a two-year period. Superjesus singer Sarah McLeod says the Australian music industry is still very much a 'blokes game'
Rocker Sarah McLeod has revealed that, when it comes to sexism in the Australian music industry, little has changed in decades. As frontwoman for The Superjesus, McLeod has enjoyed a 30 year career that has spawned four studio albums and three ARIA Awards. Speaking to he Daily Telegraph, McLeod, 52, who is also chair of advocacy group Women In Music, said that there had been little done to redress gender imbalances within the industry. 'Things have changed marginally but since I took on this role and I'm looking at the statistics, I see total imbalance everywhere,' she said. She said that statistics have shown that when it comes to festivals, female representation clocks in at around 'five percent or ten percent.' 'I used to think we didn't get chosen for festivals, or another female-fronted band didn't get picked, because we weren't good enough,' she told the publication. 'But over the years I've realised that it is still very much a blokes' game, and we play it the best we can.' It was a similar sentiment that McLeod expressed when talking to The Music in 2023. 'It still is very much a male-dominated world, and I don't think it's changed as much as it should have, but at least we're aware of it now,' she said. 'The discussions are open, but it's still very much a male-dominated world.' She added that in the early days of The Superjesus she felt like just one of the guys, until choosing to embrace her femininity on stage. 'I used to think we didn't get chosen for festivals, or another female-fronted band didn't get picked, because we weren't good enough, But over the years, I've realised that it is still very much a blokes' game, and we play it the best we can,' she added. I've got something else I could be, something better".' Sarah caused a stir, back in 2014, after she hit out at a touring festival, from which The Superjesus were dropped, for being too male-centric. In a post to Facebook at the time, McLeod claimed that The Superjesus and the Baby Animals, fronted by Suze DeMarchi had been culled from a Day On The Green tour to make way for iconic UK rocker Billy Idol. 'Guys, I'm sorry to say this and we do not know why this has happened but The Superjesus and the Baby Animals have been booted off A Day On The Green in favour of adding Billy Idol,' she wrote. 'So it's now Billy, Cheap Trick, The Angels and The Choirboys. They will refund your tickets if you are no longer interested in attending this sausage fest.'
