Lando Norris banishes qualifying blues to claim Monaco Grand Prix pole
The British driver set a new record around the streets of Monte Carlo to beat local hero Charles Leclerc to pole by 0.109 seconds.
Norris, who has bemoaned his qualifying slip-ups throughout the season, put it together at the death to clinch his first pole since the season-opener in Melbourne.
Oscar Piastri, who leads McLaren team-mate Norris by 13 points at the top of the championship standings, will start Sunday's race from third ahead of Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton.
Max Verstappen, who clinched his second win of the season at Imola last weekend to close to within 22 points of Piastri, qualified fifth.
Leclerc, who sparked jubilation in the principality 12 months ago when he ended years of near misses to clinch his first home victory, topped all three practice sessions and looked well set to clinch a fourth Monaco pole in five years.
The Monegasque improved on his final run in qualifying but was undone by Norris' blistering final lap.

'It has been a long time coming, I feel good,' Norris said. 'I don't think you realise how good this feels after a few qualifying struggles over last few months.
'This is probably the hardest place to do it. I am very pleased.'
Monaco is widely considered to be the most crucial qualifying session of the year, due it being nigh-on impossible to overtake around the narrow streets of the principality.
The FIA have introduced a mandatory two pit-stop rule for this season in a bid to create more strategy options for the race.
Hamilton crashed in the closing stages of final practice, losing control of his Ferrari at Massenet and spinning into the barriers.
Ferrari were forced into extensive work on Hamilton's car, including changing the nose, front wing and gearbox.
The seven-time world champion had to pull together a fast lap to make it out of Q1 but was then placed under investigation for impeding Verstappen.
Ferrari appeared to inform their driver that the Dutchman was on a slow lap, with Hamilton saying: 'You said he was slowing down, f**k sake man!'
Hamilton was just over four tenths off Norris' pole time.
Mercedes endured a miserable qualifying, with George Russell – fourth in the drivers' standings – and Kimi Antonelli lining up 14th and 15th.

Antonelli crashed out at the end of Q1 in his first F1 Monaco qualifying. The 18-year-old blew his left front tyre when hitting the barriers on the entry to the Nouvelle Chicane.
Russell was on the radio at the start of Q2 to report that he had lost power, with his car coming to halt in the middle of the tunnel – bringing out an inevitable red flag.
The marshals pushed his stricken machinery out of the tunnel and into an escape road as Russell guided the car and banged his steering wheel in frustration.

Sir Chris Hoy shares new update on 'terrifying' cancer 'death sentence'
The cycling legend was told last year he had between two and four years to live. Sir Chris Hoy says he wants to show that "life goes on" following his cancer diagnosis, despite admitting it felt like receiving a "death sentence". The 49-year-old was told he had stage four prostate cancer in 2023, going public with the news in February 2024 when he announced he was undergoing treatment. The six-time Olympic gold medallist had visited a doctor with shoulder pain, but a scan later revealed a tumour. He revealed last October that it had spread to his bones, and had been told he had two to four years to live. However, in a new update on his condition, he shared his experience of racing at the Mustang Challenge Le Mans Invitational on Friday, June 13, alongside British racing driver and presenter Chris Harris, the Mirror report s. Speaking to TNT Sport, Hoy said: "I was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer almost two years ago now, and it shocked me, it rocked my world. "It changed everything in one sentence, you're told that's not curable, but it's treatable. So suddenly, you have this death sentence, and it's terrifying, but I'm here to show that life goes on for many people in that situation." He was part of the Academy Motorsport team, with him and Harris securing a 20th place finish with a total time of 37:34:746, with a best lap time of 4:30:864. Hoy famously took part in Le Mans Proper in 2016, finishing 17th out of 60 drivers and 12th in class. Speaking about the race, he added: "It's always been the endurance event. If you get the chance as an amateur driver, this is the cherry on top of the icing on top of the cake, this is the big one. "I still pinch myself that I got to do it, when you watch on TV or come to watch it live, I still can't quite believe I was out there, elbows out with the big boys. It's different to anywhere else I've been to. "Not many people ever get to race on this track or drive on this track. It was an incredible experience, unlike anything else I've ever done in any sport, let alone in motorsport." It comes as he is due to take part in the Tour de 4 in September, a mass-participation bike ride which he organised with the aim of raising £1 million for UK cancer charities while changing the public's perception of a stage four diagnosis. Speaking about the event, he said: "The bike ride is to try and get as many people together as possible, not just people suffering with cancer but anybody, to show we can keep on living, make the most of every day and live in the present, because that's all any of us have." Meaning his Spice Girl wife Victoria will be known as Lady Beckham - and she 'couldn't be prouder.' Victoria took to social media on Saturday to share a sweet photo hugging her husband, and planting a kiss on his cheek. The fashion designer penned a lengthy caption, which read: 'You've always been my knight in shining armour, but now it's official. Sir @davidbeckham!!! What an honour, I couldn't be prouder of you. 'Your dedication to the things that matter most — your country, your work, your passion, and most of all, your family — has never wavered. 'The way you've touched so many lives over the years with kindness and humility speaks volumes about the man you are and continues to inspire us everyday.
