36 Actors Who Nailed A Role So Hard, No One Else Will Ever Be Able To Top It

Buzz Feed18-04-2025

The thing is, we are blessed to have so many actors who are amazing at their jobs, and we are lucky to witness them light up any screen we see them on.
Some actors are so good, in fact, that they define their role with so much precision, it's nearly IMPOSSIBLE to imagine that anyone else on earth could have portrayed that character.
1. " Julie Andrews as Mary Poppins. I work with kids and sometimes show them the movie. Their faces light up exactly the same way mine did when I first watched it as a little girl in the '90s. That perfect blend of stern and magical just can't be replicated. Emily Blunt did her best, but Julie Andrews just IS Mary Poppins."
2. "Titus Burgess in Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. Truly a comedic genius. Nobody else would have been able to play that role. Probably why the character is named Titus."
3. "Rowan Atkinson as Mr. Bean. He nailed the role so hard that most people don't know his name they just call him Mr. Bean."
4. "Ian McKellan as Gandalf. A hundred years could pass and nobody would possibly do it better."
5. " Reese Witherspoon as Elle Woods."
6. "Michelle Yeoh in Everything Everywhere All at Once. It's such a bananas movie and she manages to find the emotional depth of a character who spends a lot of the film being unlikable and totally wins you over. All while being so badass. I don't think anyone else could have pulled it off."
7. "Mathew Lillard as Shaggy. Like, zoinks, man, he really nailed it."
8. "Annie Murphy as Alexis Rose and Catherine O'Hara as Moira Rose. Pure genius."
9. "Joe Pesci and Melissa Tomei in My Cousin Vinny. They just have such perfect chemistry and are both walking caricatures while simultaneously having a lot of depth and specificity. Tomei absolutely deserved the Oscar, no one else could play that part."
10. "Janelle James in Abbott Elementary. Every single time she's onscreen I'm laughing, and I think it's a character someone else could easily get wrong."
11. "Rachel McAdams as Regina George."
12. "Christopher Lloyd in Back to the Future. Just a completely off-the-wall performance where the audience somehow never questions his absurdity. Perfectly matches the energy of the films, is absolutely hysterical, and also sells the desperation of getting Marty home while also remaining a clown throughout."
13. "Emma Stone as Bella Baxter in Poor Things. I was floored! Cannot imagine anyone else in that role as a result."
14. "Chris Tucker's rendition of Ruby Rhod in The Fifth Element will never be outdone."
15. "Sarah Michelle Gellar in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The show lives and dies with SMG. No one else could've played Buffy like that."
16. "Robin Williams as Genie. Watched Aladdin again last night with my kids and honestly got teary-eyed. Other voice actors have tried, but his improvisation and that manic energy mixed with genuine heart was lightning in a bottle. Will Smith's version just made me miss Robin even more."
17. "Tatiana Maslany in Orphan Black. I do not think anyone else could have acted so convincingly."
18. "Definitely Denzel Washington in Training Day. It's one of the most captivating yet menacing performances I've ever seen."
19. "Meryl Streep as Miranda Priestly."

"In the book, she was supposed to be more petite like the real Anna Wintour, and maybe I imagined her a little younger when I read the novel. When the movie was cast, I was bummed that it was her because it was such a departure from my mental image, but she just nailed it. I know Anna Wintour exists, but to me, that female archetype is the way Meryl Streep acted it."

20. "Morgan Freeman as Red in The Shawshank Redemption. He really deserved the Oscar for that role, but that was the year of Forrest Gump."
21. "Tom Hiddleston as Loki. He stole every Avenger's thunder, even in his minuscule appearances."
22. "Absolutely no one else could have been Dana Scully in X-Files but Gillian Anderson."
23. "Just try to imagine anybody but Viola Davis playing Annelise Keating in How to Get Away with Murder. Sure, the show is kind of silly, but she made the role iconic."
24. "Jack Black in School of Rock. He manages to be a complete loser and pathetic while also being likable enough to root for. His energy with the kids is infectious and he never seems creepy in those interactions. On top of that, he's a gifted musician with a completely unique energy."
25. "Kathy Bates in Misery. I was sure the actor herself was insane. I just can't imagine acting that convincingly."
26. "Jennifer Lopez when she played Selena. Nobody else could master that part."
27. "Daniel Radcliffe as Harry Potter. I will always see him as Harry Potter, no matter what. He's a great actor, don't get me wrong, and I've seen some fine acting from him since in various films. Ditto for Emma Watson as Hermione. Rupert, too, but he's not really been in anything else of note for me."

29. "Uma Thurman in Kill Bill. Just chef's kiss. The attitude, the sword, the yellow suit — legend behavior."

30. "Colin Firth in Pride and Prejudice. That version, in general, is the definitive adaptation of the book IMO. Firth absolutely nailed Darcy in a way nobody else has."

31. "James Earl Jones as the voice of Darth Vader."

32. "Judi Dench as M in the Bond movies. We change Bonds at the drop of a hat, but half the point of Skyfall was purely to justify Dench not being M in the future."

33. "Tim Curry as Dr. Frank-N-Furter in The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Tim Curry as anyone really, but yeah."

34. "Linda Hamilton as Sara Conner. There's been so many Sara Connors and they all fall flat."

35. "Steve Carell as Micheal Scott in The Office. No character has ever made me feel the range of emotions that character has. I still can't watch the Scott's Tots episode without absolute secondhand embarrassment. It was sad to see him go — the show wasn't the same."

36. "I really can't see anyone playing Professor Umbridge as well as Imelda Staunton. She gave life to what has become the textbook example of a hateable character."

Ryan Gosling's ‘Star Wars: Starfighter': Everything to know as Mia Goth takes on the Mikey Madison role

This is as close as we're going to get a Barbie-MaXXXine crossover. Mia Goth is joining the new Ryan Gosling-powered Star Wars installment, Starfighter, taking over the role originally offered Anora Oscar winner Mikey Madison. The casting coup is the latest scrap of news about the anticipated project, which will be helmed by Shawn Levy and which had its coming-out party at Star Wars Celebration in April 2025. More from GoldDerby Danya Taymor could make Tony Awards history with a win for 'John Proctor Is the Villain' How 'Severance' creates Lumon's 'manufactured perfection' through VFX 'Say Nothing' star Anthony Boyle on playing IRA activist Brendan Hughes: We 'get to the humanity as opposed to the mythology' The are scant details about the plot, other than it is a one-off installment that involves Ryan Gosling's character and his young companion being pursued by villainous forces. Levy says that Starfighter will cover new territory in franchise storytelling and won't feature any of the major characters from prior releases. 'This is a standalone. It's not a prequel, not sequel. It's a new adventure. It's set in a period of time that we haven't seen explored yet,' the filmmaker said. 'The reality is that this script is just so good. It has such a great story with great and original characters,' said Gosling. 'It's filled with so much heart and adventure, and there just really is not a more perfect filmmaker for this particular story than Shawn.' Starfighter the movie is not related to the 2001 video game of the same name from LucasArts that was set on the planet of Naboo during the time period of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. Starfighter takes place about five years after the events of the last Star Wars feature, 2019's Rise of Skywalker. "That rumor is true," Levy said as he brought out his star to the stage to massive cheers. "The rumors are true." According to Variety, Mikey Madison was initially offered the female lead one of the baddies hunting down Gosling and his young sidekick. Madion reportedly turned down the role due to a pay dispute. IBEW Touts 'Landmark' New Tentative Agreement With CBS

The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, the largest union representing CBS employees, has reached a new tentative agreement with the network that it calls a 'landmark' deal with 'one of the most significant wage packages in the nearly 90-year history of the relationship.' 'This tentative agreement reflects a new era of partnership and progress that recognizes the important contributions of IBEW-represented technicians while embracing the challenges and opportunities of the future,' IBEW International President Kenneth W. Cooper said in a statement Tuesday. We believe this agreement not only speaks to CBS's commitment to national and local broadcasting, it also reinforces the value of skilled union labor and reflects a shared vision for adapting to the fast-evolving media landscape,' Cooper's statement continued. Specific details of the deal have not been disclosed, given that members still need to vote to ratify it. In addition to wage increases, the IBEW says the agreement establishes a framework for conversations between the union and CBS on artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies, particularly impacting broadcast. Added George Cheeks, Co-CEO, Paramount Global and President & CEO of CBS: 'The skilled technicians and valued employees represented by IBEW have been a bedrock of CBS's success since the early days of television, and that continues as we chart our future together. I want to thank IBEW leaders Kenneth Cooper and Robert Prunn for setting the tone in a collaborative, forward-looking negotiation that worked through issues together and delivered value for all our stakeholders.' Joanne Gilbert, ‘The Great Man' and ‘High Cost of Loving' Actress, Dies at 92

Joanne Gilbert, the actress and singer who performed in the hottest nightclubs of her era and appeared alongside José Ferrer in the films The Great Man and The High Cost of Loving, died April 16 in Los Angeles. She was 92. Her father was Ray Gilbert, who won an Oscar for writing the lyrics to 'Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah' from Disney's Song of the South (1946). More from The Hollywood Reporter Renée Victor, Voice of Abuelita in 'Coco,' Dies at 86 Devin Harjes, 'Boardwalk Empire,' 'Daredevil' and 'Gotham' Actor, Dies at 41 Alan Alda, Mike Farrell Among Those Paying Tribute to Loretta Swit: "A Supremely Talented Actor" After signing a seven-year contract with Paramount in 1952, Gilbert was 'introduced' to filmgoers in the splashy George Marshall-directed Western musical Red Garters (1954), starring Rosemary Clooney, Guy Mitchell, Jack Carson and Gene Barry. In the Universal drama The Great Man (1956), Gilbert portrayed the secretary of Ferrer's Joe Harris, a character loosely based on TV-radio host Arthur Godfrey. And in the MGM comedy The High Cost of Loving (1958), she was a friend of the couple played by Ferrer and, making her movie debut, Gena Rowlands. Ferrer directed both films as well. Born in Chicago on July 17, 1932, Joanne Beverly Gilbert and her family came to Hollywood in 1939. Her dad worked for producer Earl Carroll before he joined the Disney songwriting staff, and he went on to write lyrics for such notable songs as 'Casey at the Bat' and the Andy Williams classic 'And Roses and Roses.' After pursuing a career as a fashion model in New York City, Joanne Gilbert attracted attention as a singer at a famed Hollywood hotstop — her dad helped her with her act — leading to her deal at Paramount. 'The Mocambo had one week that wasn't filled, so they decided to let me make my nightclub debut with them,' she said in 1953. 'I was rehearsing with the orchestra when Mr. Morrison, the owner of the nightclub, said he didn't like my costume. 'I was wearing black sequin slacks and a white blouse because it was easy to dance in. But a few hours before I was to go on, they took the scissors and whacked my trousers until they became very short shorts. … it was something different and caused quite a bit of comment.' After making her film debut in Houdini (1953), she sang 'This is Greater Than I Thought' in Red Garters, where her Sheila Winthrop gets involved with a Mexican bandit played by Barry. Three years later, she reunited with Clooney as a guest on the singer's syndicated variety show. Her résumé included the features Good Morning, Miss Dove (1955) and Ride Out for Revenge (1957) and guest spots on The Ford Television Theatre, Bronco, Perry Mason, Follow the Sun, The Outer Limits and Ben Casey. She also headlined at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York and on stages in Las Vegas. Gilbert was married to TV writer and future Barney Miller creator Danny Arnold from June 1955 until their divorce in August 1956 and to producer and TV-production company executive Edward L. Rissien from 1958 until their 1964 divorce. Her father was married to Silk Stockings and Pajama Game star Janis Paige from 1962 until his 1976 death.
