BLUFFTON, S.C. (WSAV) — Queenie Gadson Jenkins — knows at the matriarch of Bluffton — was added to the town's Wall of Honor Tuesday at the town council meeting.
According to a press release, the Wall of Honor committee members selected Queenie Gadson Jenkins for the honor because her life represents 'a person of Bluffton who made a difference in the daily life of others and helped create Bluffton's unique sense of place.'
She assisted in the birth of countless children as a midwife, cared for many Bluffton families as a caregiver, raised seven children and served unforgettable hot meals as a beloved cook for Michael C. Riley School.
Born in 1905 to Susie Murray and Ben Gadson, Queenie was a cherished Gullah matriarch who touched many lives in her many roles.
Her memory is honored through storytelling and cultural tributes. Her oral history was recorded by Bluffton author Fran Heyward Marscher in her 2005 book, 'Remembering the Way It Was: At Hilton Head Island, Bluffton and Daufuskie.'
Queenie died July 25, 1990, at Hilton Head Hospital and is buried in Jaxville Cemetery located on Pinckney Colony Road in Bluffton.

What's Cooking: Lemon Garlic Butter Chicken

What's Cooking: Lemon Garlic Butter Chicken (with Creamy Parmesan Pasta) Recipe by: Chef Lisa A. Heidelberg Time: 20-25 minutes Serves: 4 1 lb boneless, skinless chicken breast, cut into bite-sized pieces Zest and juice of 1 lemon ½ tsp Italian seasoning 1 tsp house seasoning ½ tsp kosher salt ½ tsp paprika 3T unsalted butter, divided 3 minced garlic cloves 8 oz linguine or fettuccine 2T butter 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese ½ cup heavy cream ½ tsp house blend Chopped parsley, for garnishing Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and cook the pasta until al dente. Once done, drain and set aside. In a mixing bowl, toss the chicken pieces with lemon zest, lemon juice, Italian seasoning, paprika, salt and pepper until well-coated. Heat 1 tablespoon of butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the seasoned chicken and sauté for about 5–6 minutes, or until the pieces are golden and cooked through. Transfer the chicken to a plate and set aside. In the same skillet, reduce heat to medium and melt the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter. Add the minced garlic and cook for 1–2 minutes until it's aromatic but not browned. Stir in the heavy cream and bring the mixture to a gentle simmer. Season with garlic powder, salt and pepper, and let the sauce bubble for a few minutes until it begins to thicken. Add the Parmesan cheese to the sauce and stir continuously until it melts into a creamy blend. Add the cooked linguine into the skillet and gently toss it in the sauce until every strand is coated. Return the cooked chicken to the pan and stir to combine everything. Finish with parsley. Enjoy! Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Union Mission's 10th annual ‘Raising Hope' gala raises awareness for homeless services

HUTCHINSON ISLAND, Ga. (WSAV) — A local nonprofit that has been changing lives across Savannah has a big night ahead on Tuesday. Union Mission is hosting its 10th annual Raising Hope gala as it works to end homelessness. WSAV spoke with Union Mission on their plans to end homelessness in the region and how they intend to celebrate a decade of hosting the Raising Hope gala. More than 800 guests will gather at the convention center on Hutchinson Island Tuesday night to celebrate a decade of transformation and support. The sold-out event is not just a gala – it's a celebration of lives changed and a powerful look ahead. Union Mission's Raising Hope event has become one of the most impactful fundraisers in the Savannah area. This year is its biggest yet. In 2024 alone, Union Mission helped transition more than 770 individuals from homelessness to stable housing, providing over 185,000 nights of shelter and 260,000 meals. Tonight's gala is focused on funding even more success through the organization's emergency housing and supportive services. This year's goal? To raise at least $150,000 – money that directly fuels Union Mission's frontline work. 'It's not just talking about it is doing it. This event enables us to be able to do what we need to do over the next year,' said Michael Traynor, the President & CEO of Union Mission. 'We're just excited to be able to tell our story and get the support that we need to continue to do the programs that we have and be able to move forward.' Looking ahead… Union Mission is transforming a former Family Dollar on West Oglethorpe into a new homeless resource center. This new place will be offering daily services, mental health support, and workforce development – all under one roof. Union Mission served over 1,300 individuals last year. What they share with WSAV today is not just about celebrating what they've done – it's about building what comes next. To get involved, volunteer, or donate to Union Mission, click here.
