FBI head Patel suing MSNBC columnist over nightclub hopping claims
FBI Director Kash Patel is suing an MSNBC analyst over a claim suggesting Patel was spending more time in nightclubs than the FBI's headquarters.
In a lawsuit filed earlier this month in Texas, Patel's attorneys argued Frank Figliuzzi, a former FBI official and frequent commentator on the channel, 'crossed the legal line by fabricating a specific lie about Director Patel.'
Figliuzzi said during a May 2 broadcast of MSNBC's 'Morning Joe' that Patel was spending more time at nightclubs in Las Vegas than on the seventh floor of the Hoover Building, according to the suit.
'Defendant knew that this was a lie when he said it,' Patel's defamation suit reads.
The Daily Beast, which first reported Patel's suit, noted MSNBC anchor Jonathan Lemire, during the next 'Morning Joe' broadcast, told viewers Figliuzzi had made a 'misstatement' about Patel and noted the network had not verified the claim.
'Since becoming Director of the FBI, Director Patel has not spent a single minute inside of a nightclub,' Patel's suit reads, arguing Figliuzzi 'fabricated this story to discredit Director Patel' because of his 'clear animus' toward him.
Figliuzzi is an MSNBC columnist, senior national security and intelligence analyst for NBC News and MSNBC. An outspoken critic of President Trump and his allies in the intelligence community, he spent more than two decades at the FBI before joining the network.
MSNBC declined to comment on Patel's suit.

California Democratic Senator Alex Padilla says FBI agents escorted him to a Kristi Noem press conference in Los Angeles on Thursday, where he was swarmed by security, contradicting the Trump administration's version of events. The Homeland Security Secretary was addressing the policing of this week's anti-ICE protests in the California city, which saw President Donald Trump controversially send in the National Guard and Marines to keep order, when Padilla spoke up to ask a question and was roughly wrestled to the ground by Secret Service and FBI agents and eventually led away in handcuffs. Noem, the agents, and the White House have since insisted that the senator 'lurched' at the secretary. Still, Padilla insisted this was not the case, offering his own version of events on last night's episode of MSNBC's The Beat with Ari Melber. Interviewer Jacob Soboroff put it to Padilla that the agents responsible for the Noem event had said they had not recognized him and believed him to be an attacker and that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) had since dismissed the whole affair as staged political theater. 'Well, first of all, that's ridiculous. It's a lie, but par for the course for this administration, right?' the senator responded. He explained that he had been in the federal building in Westwood for a meeting about the administration's plan to use Guantanamo Bay as a facility to hold undocumented migrants when he learned that Noem would be speaking just down the hall and had decided to ask her for answers in person given that the DHS had been 'non-responsive' to his requests for information. Padilla continued: 'We're, the whole time, being escorted in this federal building by somebody from the National Guard, somebody from the FBI. I've gone through screening. This is a federal building. 'They escort me over to that room. And I'm sitting in the back of the room, behind the cameras, behind the reporters, listening, listening. And at one point, it was just too much to take.' The senator said he became incensed by Noem's repeated attacks on California Gov. Gavin Newsom and L.A. Mayor Karen Bass for, in her opinion, allowing the protests to get out of hand: 'It was too much. And so I spoke up. I introduced myself and said I had a question.' He said that claims by the secretary's security detail that they did not know who he was were nonsense because he was wearing a polo shirt that was branded with the words 'United States Senate.' Padilla continued: 'There was no threat. There was no lunging. I raised my voice to ask a question. And it took, what, maybe half a second before multiple agents were on me.' Soboroff agreed that the Democrat had clearly identified himself as he spoke, referencing video of the incident, and put it to him that he had been accused of 'barging' into the briefing. 'I didn't barge into the room,' he replied. 'As I mentioned, I was in a different conference room a couple doors down the hall. I let it be known, I'd like to go listen to the press conference. The folks that were escorting me in the building walked me over. 'I didn't even open the door. The door was opened for me. And I spent a few minutes in the back of the room just listening in until the rhetoric, the political rhetoric got to be too much to take. So I spoke up.' Padilla's fellow Democrats have expressed outrage over the episode, which Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said 'sickened my stomach' and Newsom called 'outrageous, dictatorial, and shameful.' California Congressman Eric Swalwell has meanwhile called for Noem to resign. But Republicans such as Marjorie Taylor Greene have insisted that Padilla was the aggressor and should be prosecuted.

Mr. Padilla was told repeatedly to back away and did not comply with officers' repeated commands.' The Department of Homeland Security explained that the Secret Service believed the Democrat senator was 'an attacker' and claimed that the security officers 'acted appropriately.' The Department of Homeland Security added that Noem met with Padilla and had a 15-minute meeting with him after the incident. An FBI spokesperson told Fox News, 'During a press conference today held at the FBI's Los Angeles Field Office, Senator Alex Padilla was detained by members of the U.S. Secret Service assigned to Secretary Noem's detail when he became disruptive while formal remarks were being delivered.' Responding to Padilla's claims on Thursday, Noem described the Democrat senator's comments as 'absolutely ridiculous.' 'This man burst into a room, started advancing toward the podium, interrupting an opening statement, elevating his voice, [and] shouting questions,' Noem stated. 'People tried to stop him from interrupting the press conference. He refused and continued to lunge towards the podium. That is when he was removed from the room. MAGA Freaks Out as Man Arrested for Allegedly Handing Out ‘Bionic' Face Shields to Protesters
Chaos has been happening in isolated areas of Los Angeles, where federal forces and the LAPD are clashing with angry protesters and rioters. The Trump administration claims it is maintaining public order against lawlessness. California's governor, Gavin Newsom, meanwhile, says that the White House is engaged in an authoritarian power grab. As the drama in the city continues, a recent arrest would seem to be yet another opportunity for both sides to bicker with one another about who is right. A man named Alejandro Theodoro Orellana was arrested by the FBI on Thursday morning and is now expected to face a charge of conspiracy to commit civil disorders. U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli, who was appointed by Trump's Attorney General Pam Bondi in April, announced Orellana's arrest on social media, writing, 'Alejandro Theodoro Orellana was arrested this morning by @FBILosAngeles on an allegation of Conspiracy to Commit Civil Disorders (18 USC 371) for distributing face shields to suspected rioters on Tuesday.' He added: 'We are moving quickly to identify and arrest those involved in organizing and/or supporting civil disorder in Los Angeles.' In case you missed that, it would appear that Orellana has been arrested because he helped distribute gas masks to protesters. Pictures of the supposed masks that have circulated on social media seem to show that they are a 'bionic' face shield designed to protect against tear gas. Orellana's arrest is now being used by authorities to bolster a claim made by President Trump, which is that the protests in LA are being funded and organized by outside groups. 'These are radical left lunatics that you're dealing with. They're tough. They're smart. They're probably paid many of them. As you know, they're professionals,' Trump said during a press conference on Wednesday. Relatedly, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt highlighted Orellana's arrest on social media on Thursday. 'Once again, President Trump was right,' Leavitt wrote on X. 'The President rightfully raised the important question of who is organizing and funding these dangerous riots in Los Angeles. This morning, the FBI arrested Alejandro Theodoro Orellana for conspiracy to commit civil disorders after handing out face shields to anti-ICE rioters.' This whole thing is bizarre for many reasons, but perhaps the most bizarre is that, despite the fact that cars have been set on fire and federal buildings have been attacked, one of the only people whose arrest has been actively platformed by the Trump administration is a guy whose sole alleged crime (as far as we know) is helping to hand out protective face coverings so that people's eyes don't get burned by tear gas. Also, handing out gas masks is not a crime, so what are officials even really talking about? It's not totally clear. It's easy to feel like they just arrested this guy for nothing. Many other things about the incident remain unclear. The Daily Mail reports that Orellana was not the person who actually handed out the masks, and was only driving the vehicle that delivered them. Another, so far unidentified woman, is said to have actually handed out the masks. When reached for comment by Gizmodo, a public information officer for the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Central District of California did little to clarify the situation. They said, 'Mr. Orellana was arrested today. We expect his initial appearance will be scheduled for tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. PDT in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles.' The officer added that the office anticipates that Orellana will be charged with conspiracy to commit civil disorders and aiding and abetting civil disorders. There have been over 350 arrests in recent days, and the LA district attorney is expected to begin bringing cases soon, so Orellana is unlikely to be the last protester to grace the headlines. Still, right-wingers have been having a field day with his arrest and have used the incident to spin a larger conspiratorial narrative. The usual cast of MAGA voices have jumped into the fray to imply that Orellana is associated with some sort of vast conspiracy to 'fund' and coordinate the protests in LA. 'This militant and his network are part of the conspiracy to raise cash to buy riot gear,' MAGA influencer Any Ngo posted on Thursday. 'Who is funding and supplying the insurgents in Los Angeles and in other cities? The FBI has arrested the insurgency leader observed handing out $60 'bionic shield' face masks to rioters,' another frequent conspiracy poster with over 600,000 followers wrote. The Daily Signal, a conservative news site that was originally created by the Heritage Foundation, recently ran a news article entitled: 'Who Organized the LA Anti-ICE Protests That Escalated Into Riots?' It's incredibly unclear who is doing what in LA, so—hypothetically—it's not totally out of the realm of possibility that someone is giving supplies to some of the activists. But, last I checked, that's not a crime—nor is not wanting to get hit in the face with tear gas.
