Last Updated:
Shubman Gill was appointed as India's Test captain on May 24, and on Friday (June 20) he will play his first red-ball match as the captain of the Indian men's cricket team.
Shubman Gill will make his Test captaincy debut on Friday (June 20). The 25-year-old right-handed batter from Punjab was appointed as India's 37th Test captain on May 24, and on June 20, he will play his first Test as India captain against England at Headingley in Leeds. Ahead of Gill's memorable Test, the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) took to X on Thursday (June 19) to share a post for him, which is now going viral on the internet.
In the viral tweet, PCA shared an old picture of Gill and wrote, 'From the soils of Punjab to the summit of Indian cricket—Shubman Gill, the son of the Punjab Cricket Association, now leads the nation as Test Captain. The journey was never luck—it was destiny. You are the chosen one. And tomorrow, a new legacy begins. All of Punjab stands behind you. Now show the world why you wear that crown."

Gill, who has played 32 Tests for India so far, was preferred for the top job over the likes of KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, and Jasprit Bumrah. Gill will succeed Rohit Sharma as India Test captain, and the right-handed batter would like to lead by example.
Gill, who is seen as the next big thing in cricket by many fans, experts, and greats of the game, has captained India in five T20Is so far and won four matches. He was appointed as vice-captain of India's T20I and ODI teams last year in July.
In the five-match Test series between India and England, Gill will bat at No. 4. While speaking to reporters during India's pre-match press conference on Thursday, Gill said both he and head coach Gautam Gambhir felt the No. 4 slot was ideal for him once Kohli retired.
'After Virat Bhai retired, me and GG (Gautam Gambhir) Bhai had a discussion about it, and we were both clear that he wanted me to bat at No. 4, and I was also clear that I also wanted to bat at that number," he said.
Gill also emphasised on giving longer ropes to deserving players.
'It's about (having) clear communication; what do you want from them? Trying to assign roles and how they would want to go about their things. Having the confidence to be able to back them with their natural game (as to) how they want to play this game," he said.
'Definitely there would be some players that you tend to give long ropes just because of their pure potential that you see. But having said that, it's all about giving them clear communication and having honest conversations with them, and that's how I feel the bond of a leader and a player is (at) the best," he added.

Neeraj Chopra Paris Diamond League 2025 Live Updates: Neeraj vs Weber showdown again, javelin throw to start at 1.12 am IST
Neeraj Chopra Paris Diamond League 2025 Match Result Live Updates: India's javelin star Neeraj Chopra will be back in action as he competes in the Paris leg of the Diamond League and will be hoping to get the better of Germany's Julian Weber, who had trumped him the last time they met at the Doha event in May. In Doha, Neeraj had finally breached the 90m mark but Weber had upstaged the Indian's 90.23m throw with 91.06m with his last throw and claimed the top spot on the podium. Neeraj will look to one up him this time around in a stacked field which also consists of Anderson Peters of Grenada. At the Janusz Kusocinski Memorial a week later, in chilly conditions not ideal for throwing, Neeraj struggled for most of the event but Weber was operating in a zone that no one else in the field was. While the Indian star did manage to come up with 84.14m with his last throw (and extended his run of finishing in the top two to 22 events since June 2021), Weber threw thrice beyond 85m while no one else managed to even once. Last year, Neeraj had missed the Paris Diamond League in order to prepare for the Olympics where he snapped up silver with a throw of 89.45m. He last competed in the Paris DL in 2017 as a junior world champion and finished fifth with a throw of 84.67m. India's Neeraj Chopra in action during the Men's Javelin Throw in Doha (Reuters) Neeraj Chopra at Paris Diamond League: Javelin star set for another battle with Julian Weber In his Instagram post at the end of the 2024 season, Neeraj Chopra – reflecting on a year that wasn't up to his high standards but still saw him keep his place on the Olympic podium and continue his streak of top-two finishes – wrote about his learnings and setbacks. 'While I couldn't meet my own expectations, I feel this was a season in which I learned a lot. I am now determined to return, fully fit and ready to go.' One of the replies to that post came from Julian Weber, who had finished a disappointing 6th at Paris 2024. The German wrote: 'Such a great season bro, next year 90m will be easy for us.' And followed that with a muscle flex emoji.

Shubman Gill Slams Ton, Makes History In 1st Game As India Captain. Joins Virat Kohli, Sunil Gavaskar
Shubman Gill 's 1st day in office as India Test captain began on a historic note as the 25-year-old slammed his sixth Test ton in style against England on Day 1 of the first test at Headingley. After Rohit Sharma 's retirement, Gill was chosen for the captain's position. If there were any apprehensions (with a poor overseas record as batter), Gill put that all to rest slamming only his second Test ton outside India. At 25 years and 285 days, Gill is the fourth youngest behind Herbie Taylor, Alastair Cook and Steven Smith to score a ton in his first match as captain. He is the 23rd player to slam a century in his debut innings as captain. Among Indians he is the fourth after Vijay Hazare, Sunil Gavaskar, Virat Kohli to achieve the feat. Hundred in debut innings as India's Test captain 164* Vijay Hazare vs Eng Delhi 1951 116 Sunil Gavaskar vs NZ Auckland 1976 115 Virat Kohli vs Aus Adelaide 2014 102* Shubman Gill vs Eng Headingley 2025 Meanwhile, former cricketer Yograj Singh believes India's newly crowned Test captain Shubman Gill needs to lead from the front and has to take the team forward along with him, just like Kapil Dev did in the 1983 World Cup, in his first assignment against England, which begins on Friday at Headingley. According to Yograj, Gill must set his individual scoring target high and take the team with him. He also dropped the series prediction and believes India has the potential to conquer England and stand victorious on the opposition's territory for the first time since 2007. "A few days ago, I was talking to Yuvraj Singh about Abhishek (Sharma) and Shubman Gill. Yuvraj said he would have to lead from the front. As Shubman Gill goes out to bat, he has to stay at the crease for the maximum time. When a captain leads from the front, and scores run. It is important for Shubman to set a target of 100, 200 or 300. He has to lead from the front. He also has to take everyone forward together, just like Kapil Dev did in the 1983 World Cup. I believe India will win the series," Yograj told ANI. India is poised to witness a new era in the Test format without its batting mainstays, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, who retired from the format last month. India has infused young blood and a new skill set to fill the gap left by the departure of the two seasoned pros. Apart from the batting bigwigs, India will miss off-spinner Ravichandran Aswhin and the plethora of variations he brought. Ashwin had his last dance in Australia and announced his retirement midway through the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
