TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — There are just a few days left for people to submit comments regarding Union Health's possible acquisition of Terre Haute Regional Hospital.

Strongbow ad promotes booze to help manage work stress, watchdog finds
The Advertising Regulatory Board (ARB) has ruled against a television commercial for Strongbow Gold Apple cider, citing violations of the Alcohol Industry Communication Code of Conduct. A consumer complaint claimed that the advert promoted alcohol as a way to manage workplace stress, a claim the ARB upheld after its review. The advert opens with a stressed office worker, overwhelmed by a large pile of paperwork, while being berated by a colleague. The scene transitions to upbeat, fast-paced music accompanied by placards resembling firewalls that fill the worker's computer screen, displaying the words 'WARNING' and 'NEVER STOP PLAYING.' The focus then returns to the man, still seated at his desk, which is now cleared of the previously piled-up files. He smiles while holding a paper aeroplane, which transforms into a bottle of Strongbow Gold Apple cider. He leans back in his chair, feet propped up on the desk. All visible computer monitor screens display the time as 17:00. The words 'Never stop playing' then come on-screen again, along with a disclaimer that the drinks are not for sale to anyone under the age of 18. In its findings, the ARB acknowledged the advertiser's argument that the folding of the paper aeroplane and the subsequent transformation into a cider bottle were intended as a lighthearted, metaphorical representation of 'leaving work behind' and embracing post-work leisure. However, the ARB argued that the advert would reasonably be interpreted by viewers as portraying alcohol consumption as a solution to workplace stress. The ARB took issue with the pivotal moment in the advert: the stressed worker visibly transitioning to a state of happiness after the introduction of the cider. This, the ARB argued, directly ties emotional relief and relaxation to the product, in line with clause 1.4.1 of the Alcohol Industry Communication Code that explicitly prohibits any suggestion in advertising that alcohol consumption can reduce stress, improve relaxation, or solve personal or professional challenges. The advertisers for the Strongbow Gold Apple cider were ordered to withdraw the advertisement and prohibited from using it again in its current form.

Catholic Charities holding summer fundraisers
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Catholic Charities is a local organization that helps food insecure individuals get the help they need. This summer, they are hosting a number of fundraising events to help with that cause, that they say they need now more than ever. A recent study by Feeding America shows that people in West Central Indiana are struggling. Jennifer Tames is the Assistant Agency Director for Catholic Charities. She said the results of the study show Vigo County has a problem. 'Vigo County ranks the fourth highest in the percentage of food insecure individuals across the state of Indiana and the third highest in the percentage of children who are food insecure', Tames said. To help this issue, Catholic Charities is holding two upcoming fundraisers. The first, the Quick Quack Trail Run. 'It's not a road race where people are looking to get their best time. It's a race that is going to be taking place at Griffin Bike Park on June 21st', Tames said. 'We're using the bike trails there that include things like a water bridge over a pond, moguls, hills, and just all sorts of fun parts of running a trail.' Another event this summer is the Rubber Duck Regatta. Jessica Murphy, Development Manager for Catholic Charities, said residents can adopt a duck for a chance at a cash prize. 'On the 4th of July, you'll have an opportunity to win $10,000 through the Rubber Duck Regatta', Murphy said. 'Misco, our good friends, release upwards of 15,000 rubber ducks at Fairbanks Park. The winning duck is chosen at random.' Both events will raise money for Catholic Charities to help food insecure individuals in the local community. 'We know that our community members step up every time we ask and we appreciate that because we can't provide the services of Catholic Charities without the community coming together to provide the funds for that', Tames said. Berkshire Biomedical Awarded NIH Research Grant to Support Clinical Study Program to Evaluate Patient Retention and Other Benefits of the COPA™ System for Take-Home Methadone Medication Management
Funds from the Two-Phase Fast-Track SBIR Grant, Combined, Would Total Approximately $2.9 Million DALLAS, June 2, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Berkshire Biomedical Corporation ("Berkshire" or "the Company"), focused on developing its proprietary drug dispensing technology to enhance patient wellness, today announced that it has been awarded the first phase of a two-phase Fast-Track Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant (1 R44DA061908-01A1) from the National Institutes of Health's (NIH) National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA). Valued at approximately $2.9 million over 30 months, the two-phase grant will support execution of a clinical study to evaluate patient retention and other benefits of the Company's COPA™ System for Take-Home Methadone Medication Management as part of Medication for Opioid User Disorder (MOUD) treatment. Phase I funds of approximately $326,400 will support the execution of a single-site study. Receipt of the approximate $2.55 million Phase II award will support the execution of an open-label, randomized, parallel multi-site study, which will be contingent on an assessment of the Phase I report, as well as the review and approval of any other documentation necessary for continuation and availability of NIH funds. COPA is a novel, oral liquid dispensing system specifically designed to deliver accurate and precise doses of controlled and non-controlled prescription medications to only an Authenticated Intended User (AIU™), upon confirmation of dual biometric identifications (fingerprint and dentition) prior to each dose, with the goal of enhancing patient wellness and providing remote monitoring. "The Fast-Track SBIR grant process is highly competitive, with only 18% of applicants having been chosen under this program in 2023, alone," stated John Timberlake, Chief Executive Officer of Berkshire. This is Berkshire's second Fast-Track SBIR Grant from NIH. The Company received an initial two-phased award totaling $2.2 million (1R44DA057185) in 2022 which extended through 2024, to complete the development of the COPA system. Mr. Timberlake continued, "The requirement to travel to an Opioid Treatment Program (OTP) clinic, daily, has been shown to reduce treatment retention and deter some patients from even starting treatment. A mixed methods study found that take-home dose flexibility among stable patients was associated with receiving more take homes, higher rates of treatment retention, and lower rates of opioid-positive drug tests. Higher retention rates in opioid use disorder medication among patients with OUD were, therefore, associated with better outcomes. There have been a considerable number of retrospective studies evaluating opioid use disorder treatment retention; however, there are very few prospective comparison studies."
