DCP Adavath, who arrived late due to traffic, immediately grabbed a lathi and charged into the crowd, risking his safety to regain control, according to his subordinates. After several attempts, he managed to close the gate from inside.
He and his team then moved towards Gates 18 and 19, lathi-charging the crowd. This intervention ensured that Gate 19 remained stampede-free. But by then, five people had already collapsed near Gate 17 and were rushed for medical care.
While the Bengaluru police have yet to officially reveal how many police officials were deployed at the stadium, sources said Adavath and his team had to control the crowd on their own for nearly an hour.
A significant delay in police reinforcements exacerbated the situation. By the time backup arrived, 11 people had lost their lives, and more than 50 were injured. DCP Adavath, who sustained a hand injury and showed signs of low blood pressure and arrhythmia, was admitted to Ramaiah Hospital and is currently under observation. Preliminary investigations revealed that the accused were working under the directions of Jugraj Singh, who is currently lodged in Central Jail at Sri Goindwal Sahib, and actively running the smuggling racket through his advocate's munshi identified as Rajan. The kingpin Jugraj Singh, who has been facing several criminal and drug-related cases, is reportedly in contact with Pakistani drug traffickers from within the jail, he said. The DGP said these weapons were smuggled from across the border and were likely meant to be supplied to criminal elements in Punjab. Further investigations are on to establish forward and backward linkages in this case, he added. Sharing operation details, Additional Director General of Police of the anti-narcotics task force Nilabh Kishore said that they had received credible inputs about the trio's involvement in retrieving weapons on the directions of their jailed handler Jugraj Singh. Acting swiftly on the inputs, police teams launched an intelligence-led operation and apprehended accused persons from opposite Khalsa College in Amritsar and recovered weapon consignments from their possession, he said. Nikhil Sosale also approached the High Court to challenge his arrest. He claimed that he was arrested without any materials and even before the police had conducted a preliminary enquiry. He has thus sought to declare his arrest as illegal. On Thursday, the Bengaluru police registered an FIR against the RCB franchise, DNA Entertainment Pvt. Ltd., an event management company, and the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) for culpable homicide, illegal assembly, and other serious charges. A day after the stampede , the Karnataka police suspended multiple IPS officers, including the Bengaluru city police Commissioner, B Dayananda. Apart from Dayananda, Additional Commissioner of Police Vikash Kumar Vikash, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Shekhar HT, Assistant Commissioner of Police Balakrishna and Cubbon Park Police Inspector Girish AK were also suspended with immediate effect.
