Renard expecting no letup from Japan as Saudis eye World Cup spot
Coach Herve Renard said Saudi Arabia is in a "tough sprint" to reach the 2026 World Cup, but he is not expecting any favors from already qualified Japan on Tuesday.
The Saudis are in third place in Group C in the third round of Asian qualifying and trail second-place Australia by a point with three games remaining.
The top two teams advance directly to next year's World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico, while the third- and fourth-place sides go into another qualifying round.
Runaway group leaders Japan has already clinched its place and Renard is not expecting it to take its foot off the gas when its faces his Saudi side in Saitama.
"It's a tough sprint for the second position," the French coach said on Monday.
"Concerning Japan, we know they are disciplined. We know their philosophy so there is no doubt they will play this game at 100%."
Renard led the Saudis to a famous victory over eventual winners Argentina at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, and he returned for a second stint in October last year when Roberto Mancini was fired.
The Saudis picked up their first win in five qualifiers when they beat China 1-0 at home last week to move three points clear of Indonesia, Bahrain and China.
They still have to travel to play Bahrain in the group before hosting Australia in their final match.
First the Saudis have to face a rampant Japan, which has won six and drawn one of its seven games so far and punched its World Cup ticket with a 2-0 win over Bahrain last week.
"We know we are playing against a very strong team but there are only three games remaining so it's very important for us," said Renard.
"We need to be ready to have a tough game, but in football you have to believe in ourself and to believe in our qualification."
Japan coach Hajime Moriyasu said he would shuffle his pack to face the Saudis, with striker Ayase Ueda and midfielder Hidemasa Morita having already returned to their clubs.
Brighton's Kaoru Mitoma is a doubt after missing training on Monday.
Japan captain Wataru Endo said "who wants to win the game will be more important than tactics."
"They are in a tough spot and they need to get a result, they want the three points," said the Liverpool midfielder.
"We need to want it more than them. We're aiming to win the World Cup and we need to give everything in this game."

The Japanese confirmed their ticket for the finals in March and, as a result, head coach Moriyasu has named a squad featuring eight uncapped players for the trip to Perth. While Liverpool midfielder Wataru Endo and Real Sociedad's Takefusa Kubo have been included in the 27-player line, the Japanese are missing key players such as Kaoru Mitoma, Hidemasa Morita and Ayase Ueda. Australia goes into the game in second place in the group, three points ahead of Saudi Arabia with two games remaining, although Popovic will be without goalscoring midfielder Jackson Irvine, who is sidelined after foot surgery. "It's not their best squad, I wonder what that will look like because when we played them in Japan they had their starting 11 all playing in Europe," Popovic said. "We can see that they have a mixture of J-League players and European based players in their squad. We haven't beaten them often and I'm sure they'll be strong regardless of who they play."

Majestic Root's ODI best seals England's series win over the West Indies
England's Joe Root celebrates after hitting the winning run against West Indies in Cardiff cricket Joe Root struck his maiden one-day international score of over 150 as England beat the West Indies by three wickets in Cardiff on Sunday to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in a three-match series. England were faltering at 2-2, chasing 309 for victory, after both Jamie Smith and Ben Duckett were out for ducks at Sophia Gardens. But star batsman Root's 166 not out saw England finish on 312-7 as they won with seven balls to spare ahead of Tuesday's finale at the Oval, despite West Indies fast bowler Alzarri Joseph's fine return of 4-31 from his maximum 10 overs. Root received good support from England captain Harry Brook (47) -- a series winner in his first campaign as permanent white-ball skipper -- in a stand of 85. Will Jacks (49) then helped Root add 143 in 20 overs during a sixth-wicket partnership that took England to the brink of victory. This match also saw Root become England's leading ODI run-scorer, his tally of 7,082 runs in 168 innings surpassing retired World Cup-winning captain Eoin Morgan's mark of 6,957 in 207. The fly-half has finished every season in top-level domestic rugby since 2017 with a winner's medal and he picked up another as Toshiba beat Kubota Spears 18-13 in the Japan Rugby League One final. He had to do it the hard way after breaking his right hand in the closing stages of last week's semifinal win, with coach Todd Blackadder expecting his star man was "70-30" to miss the final. Mo'unga said he spent three days in an oxygen chamber in the build-up to the game and "knew all along that I was going to play. "I knew it wasn't impossible to play this weekend, and obviously a final, it's a no-brainer really," said the 31-year-old. "You want to give yourself the best chance to be part of something special." Mo'unga joined Toshiba on a three-year deal after helping New Zealand reach the 2023 World Cup final, where they lost to South Africa. He gave another playmaking masterclass in front of more than 50,000 fans at Tokyo's National Stadium. Mo'unga scored his team's first try with less than 10 minutes on the clock and set up their second with a crafty dummy early in the second half. He also scored eight points with his boot. Mo'unga won seven Super Rugby titles with the Crusaders in New Zealand and said he was "so grateful to be part of winning teams". "I try to tell some of the boys in our team not to take this moment for granted because a lot of people don't win, and a lot of people don't win back to back," he said. Mo'unga jinked through the opposition defense to open the scoring in the eighth minute. He also started the second half strongly, taking out a defender with a dummy before slipping the ball to Yuto Mori for Toshiba's second try. Mo'unga said the pain in his hand made "things just a little bit harder" but did not affect his game. "Once you get out there, you just play rugby and try not to think about it too much," he said. Toshiba's victory denied Kubota's Australian fly-half Bernard Foley and South African hooker Malcolm Marx a second title in Japan. Marx said he was not aware that Mo'unga was carrying an injury. "He's a great player, he showed that how he performed today even with a broken hand," said Marx. "It shows his resilience." Toshiba finished the regular season in first place, which earned them a bye into the play-off semifinals. Third-placed Kubota had to come through a quarterfinal and were looking to regain the title that they won in 2023. Toshiba coach Blackadder hailed Mo'unga's influence on his side, calling him the "ultimate team man". "At the start of the week, we weren't sure," he said of Mo'unga's injury.
