Whipsnade Zoo 'overjoyed' as lion cubs increase pride to 10
A zoo has welcomed the arrival of four newborn lion cubs, which has boosted the size of its pride to 10.The litter of rare northern African lions was the second batch to be born recently at Whipsnade Zoo in Bedfordshire, after three arrived in November.Section manager Sarah McGregor said keepers were "overjoyed to have a second litter" and described the cubs as "precious additions to the breeding programme".The zoo said African lion populations were declining in the wild as a result of farming, housing, hunting and resource extraction.
When the new cubs are 10 weeks old their sexes will be confirmed at health checks and their names will be announced.The lion enclosure at the Bedfordshire zoo stood empty for a while after keepers had to put its two remaining lions to sleep in 2022 due to "age-related conditions".In summer 2023 lionesses Waka and Winta arrived along with male lion Malik, who are now all three years old.On 25 November Winta gave birth to three cubs; two male and one female. Waka's litter of four arrived on 23 January, with keepers watching the birth remotely via a hidden "cubcam".
Ms McGregor said: "Lions are highly sociable animals and enjoy living in large groups. "The youngsters will grow up side-by-side with their half-siblings, and I'm sure they'll love having an abundance of playmates."She said Waka and Winta would share parental duties, as lions in the wild would."While Waka and her cubs may be keeping warm and cosy indoors for a little bit longer, visitors will be able to catch a glimpse of their trio of half-siblings racing around the paddock this Easter," she added.

Two arrests and birds seized in Bradford in cockfighting probe
Two men have been arrested and several cockerels seized from six properties in Bradford in connection with an investigation into animal man was arrested on Wednesday on suspicion of causing an animal fight to take place and taking part in an animal fight, while another man was arrested on suspicion of being present at an animal fight, according to West Yorkshire RSPCA confirmed its officers had joined police as warrants were carried out at six addresses in Bradford and two addresses in Burton-upon-Trent and Warrington as part of the investigation.A "number" of cockerels were removed during those operations and placed into the care of the RSPCA, a spokesperson said. Trevoh Chalobah hoping his England career lasts longer than brother Nathaniel's
The Chelsea defender has received his maiden call-up for Thomas Tuchel's squad for forthcoming games against Andorra and Senegal following a successful season. He will be hoping to get on the pitch in the World Cup qualifier against the minnows in Barcelona on Saturday or the City Ground friendly against the African side three days later. His sibling Nathaniel, who currently plays for Sheffield Wednesday, won his one and only England cap in a Nations League win over Spain in 2018, appearing for six minutes and 54 seconds as a late substitute. And Trevoh is hoping that this is just the start for him. The 25-year-old said: 'When I found out I phoned my dad, spoke to my family, let them know, and they were over the moon for me also. And my older brother as well, Nathaniel. He was happy for me also. 'Obviously, him being here also, and to see his younger brother do the same, it was a very proud moment for him. And hopefully I can be here even more. 'It's been a journey for my parents. Obviously, they've seen the highs and lows, and they've been there every single step of the way. It's a good moment for them to share.' He added: 'Individually for me, it's been a very good season. This has been one of my goals, and it's good to share with the Chelsea players. 'It just shows the quality that Chelsea produce and the players, it's good to be here with them also and share that moment. 'They've obviously eased me in here and helped me. As I said, it just shows the quality and the players Chelsea are producing this over the years, it's been amazing. 'I'm here, being called up to England, and it's going to keep carrying on hopefully.' While most of the England squad will be heading on holiday after the Senegal match, Chalobah and his Chelsea team-mates will be going to the US for the revamped Club World Cup.
