The Informer: Opening of port brought rejoicing to Lake Charles

'Only once before in the history of Lake Charles — Armistice Day, Nov. 11, 1918 — was there such general and genuine rejoicing in the city,' reads the Dec. 3, 1926, American Press. 'And never before has any one achievement meant so much to the popular mind in Lake Charles as are the formal port and water opening ceremonies here today.'
Lake Charles had been a port of call since the early 1800s for sailing vessels navigating the shallow river to pick up cargoes of lumber.
The Intracoastal Canal connecting the Calcasieu and Sabine rivers was later completed in 1915. It was 20.5 miles long and 12 feet deep, with a 90-foot bottom width.
In 1922, voters in Calcasieu Parish approved a $2.75 million bond issue to deepen and widen the Calcasieu River from the Intracoastal Canal to Lake Charles. The intent was to provide a navigation route through the Intracoastal Canal to the Sabine River and to the Gulf of Mexico.
From their, the vision became larger.
On April 1, 1925, commissioners met with representatives of the three rail lines serving Lake Charles —Southern Pacific, Kansas City Southern and Missouri Pacific — to discuss facilities and the role the rail lines would play in the future of the Port of Lake Charles.
A special election was called for July 7, 1925, for $500,000 to build wharves, docks, warehouses, railway facilities and elevators for use in connection with the construction of the port.
On Dec. 3, 1926, the dream became a reality. The American Press said trains, yachts and tug boats brought delegations by the hundreds from distant cities just to partake in the opening festivities.
Long before the 9 a.m. ceremony began, Lake Charles began to hum with activity and music from 'the finest bands in the South,' including the Magnolia Refining company group from Beaumont, Texas, and the Centenary Cadets from Shreveport.
Gov. Oramel Simpson and representatives of Gen. Edgar Jadwin, who was then chief of Army Engineers in Washington, D.C., were among the celebrated guests.
'The day opened clear and crisp with not a cloud in sight to dampen any one's aspirations and enthusiasm, and on schedule time formal ceremonies began with the grand parade from the Kansas City Southern deport at 10:20 a.m.,' the newspaper reads. 'From that hour on during the remainder of the day, one big event has followed another with a swiftness and magnitude that have eclipsed any celebration ever before attempted in Lake Charles.'
Mayor Henry J. Geary presided at the opening of the formalities and introduced the Rev. R.H. Wynn, pastor of the Broad Street Methodist Church, who gave the invocation.
'After delivering the address of welcome in which he extended the keys of the city and of the port to the distinguished guests and to the visitors, Mayor Geary expressed greetings on the occasion, which he said is the outstanding epoch in the history of Lake Charles.'
Nearly 100 years later, the Port — more formally, the Lake Charles Harbor and Terminal District — accounts for a large percentage of local economic revenue and more than $34 million in annual Lake Charles tax revenue. It covers more than 200 square miles in Calcasieu Parish and operates 5,400-plus acres.

Mary Penelope Talbot Dugas, born in Manchester on Sept. 13, 1942, daughter of the late Alcess and Catherine Beatrice (Fontenot) Talbot, passed away Saturday May 31, 2025, at the age of 82. Mary, Penny, as many knew her, was proud of her childhood in Manchester, she loved country life. Mary, a graduate of Iowa High School, played basketball and was the Drum Major of the band. She delivered the newspaper for the American Press on her one eyed horse named Blackie. Mary loved dancing with the love of her life George, whom she met in 1st grade. She loved her Family, sports, Sunday afternoon volleyball games in the neighborhood, yard work, Gaither concerts, vacations with her family, and enjoyed afternoon coffee with her friends. She gave all her children the love of music and taught them all how to dance. Mary had a love for owls and had a very extensive collection that her family helped her collect. Mary is preceded in death by her parents; sister, Carolyn Buller, and brother, James A. Talbot. Mary is survived by her husband of 63 years, George Dugas; children, Derrick Dugas (Claudia), Craig Dugas (Pam), Michelle Dugas Peet (Terry), and Kyle Dugas (Tracy); siblings, Rod Talbot (Eunice Rae), Cecil Talbot (Brenda), Bennett Talbot (Kim), Tommy Talbot (Gay), and Bobby Talbot (Cindy); grandchildren, Samara Dugas Rigmaiden (Thomas), Shaina Dugas Duhon (Dustin), Sylvia Dugas Downing (Adam), Derrick Dugas II (Esther), Dominic Dugas (Abigail), Kelsey Peet Gomez (Edwin), Carly Peet, Tyler Peet, Dayton Dugas (Brooke), Danynn Dugas, and Dru Dugas, and 16 great-grandchildren, with another one on the way. A Memorial Mass will be held in St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Lacassine on Friday, June 6, 2025 at 11 a.m., the Rev. Levi Thompson, Celebrant. Visitation begins Friday, June 6, 2025 in Johnson & Brown Funeral Home of Iowa, from 9 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Burial of her cremains will be in Lacassine Cemetery at a later date. The Informer: Imperial Calcasieu Museum reflective of local history

The Imperial Calcasieu Museum is itself reflective of local history. The bricks were salvaged from the old Missouri Pacific Railroad station. The white columns are from the once-proud Majestic Hotel — a Lake Charles landmark that was demolished in the late 1960s — and the beams and balustrades are from old homes of the area. The 4,000-square-foot building, constructed at a cost of $100,000, sits on about an acre of land at the corner of Sallier and Ethel streets. 'The queen of the grounds is the historic Sallier Oak with its wide-spreading branches,' according to a May 31, 1981, edition of the American Press celebrating the 18th anniversary of the museum. Thought to be planted by Charles Sallier when he came to Lake Charles in 1783, 'records show that the land where the oak and the museum are situated was presented in 1860 by Catherine LeBleu Sallier.' The tree is registered as a member of the Live Oak Society of the Louisiana Garden Club Federation. A historical marker was placed near the tree by the Daughters of the American Revolution. In March of 1963, the Junior League of Lake Charles established the Imperial Calcasieu Historical Museum, later to become the Imperial Calcasieu Museum. 'The museum was first located in City Hall, then some months later, in December of that same year, the museum was moved to the historic little brick building at 1019 Lakeshore Drive through the cooperation of the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury,' the newspaper reports. The latter location now serves as the Junior League headquarters. The third — and current — location of the museum is at 204 W. Sallier St. Both the land and the Louisiana Colonial brick building were gifts from Mr. and Mrs. Frank Gibson and Dr. and Mrs. Garnett Barham. Imperial Calcasieu originally compromised what is now Allen, Beauregard, Calcasieu, Cameron and Jeff Davis parishes. 'Relics to be found in the museum date back as far as the time of the Indians — remains of Indian pottery found in the lake and arrowheads found in the area,' the 1981 edition reported. 'Cannon balls believed to be from one of Jean Lafitte's ships are also among artifacts. These were discovered when Contraband Bayou was dredged some years ago, a museum spokesman said,' the newspaper reported. Other items include historic photographs of early Lake Charles; the steering wheel of the Borealis Rex, a paddle boat that used to ply local waters; old shaving mugs once in used in the community; and replicas of all 10 flags that have flown over Louisiana. Also in the collection is the uniform worn by the late Gen. Claire Chennault of Flying Tigers fame and the wedding gown of his wife, Anna Chennault. The museum also boasts a permanent art collection including works of John James Audubon, Boyd Cruise, Angela Gregory and Lynda Benglis. The museum is open 12 months of the year and offers a minimum of 36 weeks of cultural-visual arts programming. The museum is open 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Tuesdays and Saturdays and 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Wednesday through Friday. Admission is free.

(Ashlyn Little / American Press) Southwest Louisiana has seen its fair share of blue tarps on homes in recent years. With hurricane season beginning on June 1, now is the time to be prepared in case an emergency situation strikes. The Southwest Louisiana Veterans Association has partnered with Houston-based non-profit Every Shelter to distribute FEMA-approved emergency roof patch kits as part of a pilot program for local veterans. Every Shelter volunteer John O'Donnell, who is helping coordinate the pilot program, said the organization creates shelters for refugees in places where people need it. 'They were doing it so innovatively, they were creating these shelter solutions from recycled vinyl and recycled styrofoam and the environmental side of me kind of perked up a little bit and I became really interested,' O'Donnell said. Once O'Donnell contacted Every Shelter, he learned about the patch kit. That's when he started working with them to get the word out. The patch kit is 100 percent made in the U.S. The kit includes one tarp, nails and step-by-step installation instructions. 'The tarp is super easy to put up. If you can swing a hammer you can put this tarp up. The kit comes with the nails — it comes with everything you need, including the instructions and a video about where and how to place it. It makes it really accessible for those that need it,' O'Donnell said. Small, smart intervention can prevent bigger damage and keep people safe after a storm, he said. 'For example, with my own roof, we didn't lose the whole roof, we just had enough of a hole in it that enough water got in the walls where we had to gut the whole home. This can bridge that gap between the hole in the roof and getting a new roof,' O'Donnell said. The tarp will last longer than a blue tarp because of the UV specifications that it has and because it is made out of recycled billboard, according to O'Donnell. David Soileau and Warren Vandever co-own Integrity Homes, a veteran-owned contracting company that started in 2020 after Hurricanes Laura and Delta. 'Myself and Warren served our country and we both just want to serve. We're kind of done with the national service, but we still want to serve the community at least. When John brought the opportunity for us to be involved, it let us have a bigger way to serve the community and be ready for the next event,' Souileau said. 'We really wanted to partner up with what John's (O'Donnell) got going on. We have a big heart for the community, especially here in Southwest Louisiana, and want to make sure people get taken care of — mitigation is key, you need a dry place to stay and by having these tarps available can make a huge impact in keeping you safe,' Souileau said.
