Final market study to determine JB-S'pore RTS Link fares: M'sian transport minister

The operator of the upcoming Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link is in the midst of conducting a final market study to determine the fares for the cross-border rail link, and a decision on the price of a ride will be made closer to the start of operations.
Malaysia's Transport Minister Anthony Loke and Singapore's Acting Transport Minister Jeffrey Siow said this to reporters on June 30 after the unveiling of the first of eight trains that will serve the light rail line when it opens at the end of 2026.
Mr Loke said RTS Operations (RTSO) - a joint venture between Singapore transport operator SMRT and Malaysian public transport firm Prasarana - will determine the fares of the 4km rail link.
"Of course, we hope that the right price mechanism is in place to ensure that we can encourage more people to use the RTS Link," he added.
"The whole idea of this project is to make the modal shift, to ensure that more people use public transport to cross the Causeway. So I think that is one of the important considerations," Mr Loke said.
Mr Siow said the RTS Link fare has to be determined commercially, and RTSO will need to take into account demand and supply, as well as the alternative transport options, such as cross-border public buses, and how much they cost.
He added: "We'll have to leave it to (RTSO) to figure it out, and I think they will do that probably closer to the service commencement."
Regarding what a fair price would be, Mr Loke later said that the fare must be less than what it costs for passengers to use their own means of transport.
"For example, if a worker lives farther away and rides a motorcycle across the Causeway to come to Singapore, he may have to pay for fuel and other costs... If the RTS fare is lower than his expenses, it will definitely encourage him to use the RTS," Mr Loke added.
"In the end, this is a huge expense, a huge investment for us," he said. "Both governments have invested a lot of money in this project, so we must meet that goal."
Asked whether the RTS Link's operating hours would be adjusted to suit the travel patterns of Malaysians who travel to Singapore for work, Mr Loke said that some leave their homes as early as 5am and this is something that RTSO will need to take into account.
RTSO has said that trains on the line will run from 6am to midnight daily.
Mr Loke also said that Malaysia and Singapore are pushing for an open payment system with multiple ways to pay for an RTS Link ride, adding that this is a trend for public transport operators worldwide.
Meanwhile, Mr Siow was asked whether the opening of the RTS Link will have an impact on other transport modes, including the reduction of cross-border public bus frequencies.
To this, he said the intent of the rail link is to create more mobility, and there are no immediate plans to adjust bus schedules.
The event on June 30 was the first time that Mr Siow in his capacity as Acting Minister had met Mr Loke and Johor Chief Minister Onn Hafiz Ghazi.
Mr Siow said the RTS Link is dear to his heart, as he was part of the joint conceptualisation at the early stages of the project.
"We needed the right opportunity and the leadership to see it through, and we have that today. And it is almost surreal to me to see the RTS Link emerge out of the agreement that we signed eight years ago," he said.
He added: "I, and many Singaporeans and Malaysians, look forward to the continued close cooperation between both sides and the successful delivery of the project."

Malaysia PM Anwar begins week-long trade trip to Italy, France and Brazil

KUALA LUMPUR – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will embark on a week-long tour covering three major economic hubs – Italy, France and Brazil – to bolster economic, trade and strategic ties, according to the Prime Minister's Office (PMO). The Prime Minister's senior press secretary Tunku Nashrul Abaidah said the official visits, from July 1 to 7, will include high-level meetings with counterparts in Rome, Paris and Rio de Janeiro, with the three markets collectively recording bilateral trade worth RM50.91bil last year. Anwar and his delegation, which includes senior officials and a business delegation, will travel via a chartered Malaysia Airlines flight. 'The government hopes a series of high-level meetings in Rome, Paris and Rio de Janeiro will strengthen friendships, boost trade and open up new opportunities for Malaysians and the Asean community,' he said during the PMO's daily briefing. In the Italian capital, the Prime Minister will hold a one-on-one meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni at the Chigi Palace. The meeting will provide an opportunity for both leaders to take stock of the current state of Malaysia-Italy relations and explore avenues to further strengthen cooperation, particularly in the fields of economy, defence technology and energy. The two leaders will also exchange views on regional and international issues of mutual concern, including the Asean-Italy Development Partnership, Asean-European Union Dialogue Relations and the situation in the Middle East. As Asean Chair for 2025, the Prime Minister will also highlight Malaysia's priorities and the regional grouping's efforts in addressing regional and global challenges. Anwar will also officiate the Malaysia-Italy Economic Partnership Roundtable, bringing together industry leaders from both Malaysia and Italy to explore opportunities for trade and investment collaboration. He is also scheduled to meet leaders of the local Muslim community and engage with the Malaysian diaspora in Italy. In Paris, Anwar is scheduled to meet French President Emmanuel Macron to discuss various issues, including trade, technology and education, said Tunku Nashrul. 'In addition to a business roundtable meeting with major French industry players, the Prime Minister is also scheduled to deliver a public lecture at Sorbonne University on July 4,' he said. In Rio de Janeiro, Anwar will attend the BRICS Summit on the invitation of Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. 'Malaysia's participation as a BRICS partner country and Asean chairman in 2025 will focus on international laws, the governance of artificial intelligence, and climate, among others,' Tunku Nashrul said. Malaysia officially attained BRICS partner country status on Jan 1. Tunku Nashrul said the Prime Minister will be accompanied by several Cabinet ministers and a business delegation comprising corporate giants and innovative Malaysian enterprises. 'Some of these companies are already operating and have business interests in Italy, France or Brazil. Others are exploring new investment opportunities to expand their global networks,' he said. On how the business delegation was chosen, Tunku Nashrul said the selection was managed by the Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry (Miti), following approval from the Prime Minister. 'This is an established practice through the involvement of the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (Mida) and the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade), which act as facilitators for Malaysian and foreign companies to pursue investments or joint ventures, particularly through business roundtable meetings with industry leaders in the countries visited,' he said. Among the companies that will be part of the delegation are Khazanah, Tenaga Nasional Bhd, Maybank, CIMB, AirAsia, Sunway and Weststar. Tunku Nashrul said the decision to use a chartered flight instead of a government aircraft was made to ensure greater efficiency and cost-effectiveness. 'Given the tightly packed itinerary across three countries, the chartered flight enables the delegation to minimise long transit times and make the most of their time on the ground. It is also more economical than operating a full government aircraft for the duration of the trip. 'Travelling on the same flight will ensure punctual attendance of both government and business delegates at all scheduled meetings and engagement sessions,' he said.

Chip-design firm SkyeChip is close to a Malaysian IPO, CEO says

[KUALA LUMPUR] Malaysian semiconductor designer SkyeChip is 'close' to an initial public offering after posting consecutive years of revenue and profit growth, said chief executive officer Fong Swee Kiang. The company, founded in 2019, has seen '30 per cent revenue growth every year, and a 30 per cent net profit margin,' Fong said in an interview on the sidelines of a Kuala Lumpur investment conference. 'We are on track' for profitability, he said. The company is targeting a price that would value it at more than RM1 billion (S$303 million), Bloomberg News reported in March. Fong, a former Silicon Valley executive who co-founded SkyeChip to tap into the explosion in artificial intelligence, said the focus of the Gobi Partners-backed firm is to create specialised chips to complement those of companies such as Nvidia. An IPO was 'always the plan from Day One,' Fong said, without providing further details of the company's planned share sale. SkyeChip's customers are all based in the US, he said. The CEO does not think potential US tariffs on Malaysian products will affect his business much as long as the duties are comparatively low with those of other countries. Earlier this year, Arm Holdings agreed to provide chip designs and technology to Malaysia to boost the sophistication of the nation's semiconductor industry. BLOOMBERG

Standard Chartered Bank faces US$2.7 billion lawsuit over alleged role in 1MDB fraud

[KUALA LUMPUR] Liquidators seeking to recoup misappropriated funds from Malaysia's sovereign wealth fund 1MDB have filed legal proceedings against Standard Chartered Bank in Singapore over the bank's alleged role in enabling fraud that led to over US$2.7 billion in financial losses. The move is the latest in a wide-ranging effort to recover money belonging to 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), from which US investigators say about US$4.5 billion was stolen in a complex, globe-spanning scheme. Liquidators from financial services firm Kroll, which filed the lawsuit in the High Court of Singapore, said they were seeking to hold Standard Chartered accountable for its role in allegedly enabling fraud to be committed against 1MDB. Three companies in liquidation linked to 1MDB say Standard Chartered permitted over 100 intrabank transfers between 2009 and 2013 that helped conceal the flow of stolen funds. They also allege the bank chose to overlook obvious red flags in relation to the transfer of funds, resulting in the losses, the liquidators said. 'According to this lawsuit, the transfers demonstrate serious breaches and control failings which ultimately enabled the theft of public funds by people operating at the highest levels of the Malaysian government during that period,' the liquidators said.
