Last-second winner puts Pacers ahead in NBA Finals

BBC News15 hours ago

Tyrese Haliburton scored in the final second as the Indiana Pacers snatched victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder in game one of the NBA Finals. His 21-foot shot put the Pacers in front for the first time in the match, with 0.3 seconds remaining as they secured a 111-110 win.The Thunder, with home court advantage for the first two games, had led by 15 points during the fourth quarter, and in the closing seconds the ball was in the hands of NBA most valuable player Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.However, he missed a two-point attempt with 12 seconds remaining and the Pacers grabbed the rebound, passed the ball to Haliburton and he drove down the court before hitting the winning points. It's the fourth time in the 2025 play-offs that the 25-year-old has recorded a big-time score - three times to win a match and once to force overtime.Indiana won despite turning the ball over 25 times, with 20 of those coming in the first half."It's not the recipe to win," Haliburton said. "We can't turn the ball over that much. (But) come May and June, it doesn't matter how you get them, just get them."Team-mate Myles Turner said of Haliburton: "Some players will say they have it, but there are other players that show it. He wants to be the one to hit that shot. He doesn't shy away from that moment."Gilgeous-Alexander was the game's leading scorer with 38 points, while Pascal Siakam top scored for the Pacers with 19 points, followed by Obi Toppin with 17."We played like we were trying to keep the lead instead of trying to extend it or be aggressive," said the Thunder's Jalen Williams.Game two of the best-of-seven series is also in Oklahoma and will start at 19:00 local time on Sunday, 8 June (01:00 BST on Monday).

Super Bowl winner dead after being hospitalized in May from a stroke

Former Dallas Cowboys offensive lineman Tom Rafferty, who won Super Bowl XII with the team, passed away in Windsor, Colorado on Thursday at the age of 70. Rafferty had been hospitalized since early May after suffering a stroke. His daughter, Rachel, confirmed his passing. Across a 14-year NFL career, Rafferty took part in 221 games in the regular season and the playoffs. A native of Syracuse, New York, Rafferty played college football under Joe Paterno at Penn State. He was selected 119th overall in the fourth round of the 1976 by the Cowboys - the only team he ever played for in his career. Rafferty was a steady presence on the Cowboys' offensive line - bridging a gap between two Hall-of-Fame quarterbacks: Roger Staubach and Troy Aikman. The center started two Super Bowls for the Cowboys: Super Bowl XII, when they defeated the Denver Broncos, and Super Bowl XIII, when they lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers. In the 1983 season, Rafferty laid some crucial blocks to help Dallas running back Tony Dorsett set an NFL record with a 99-yard touchdown run. After retiring from football, Rafferty worked in sports equipment sales as a second job. According to the Dallas Morning News, Rafferty managed to teach himself to walk again in middle age after a neurological disorder left him without any feeling below the waist. Rafferty, a member of the Greater Syracuse Hall of Fame, is survived by his wife, daughter, son, and two grandchildren.

Papa John's makes popular limited-time pizza a permanent menu option

Papa John's is making a popular limited-time menu item named after basketball legend Shaquille O'Neal a permanent offering. The fittingly extra-large pizza, dubbed the Shaq-a-Roni, is cut into eight foldable, shareable slices. The restaurant launched it in 2020. The 7-foot-1 NBA Hall-of-Famer O'Neal owns nine Papa John's restaurants as a franchisee. He also serves as a brand ambassador for the restaurant and is on the company's board of directors. 'Now, fans can enjoy this bold, cheesy masterpiece anytime they crave it,' the restaurant said in a statement. O'Neal said: 'The Shaq-a-Roni isn't just a pizza — it's a slam dunk. I'm pumped that it's now here to stay. It's big, it's delicious, and it brings people together — just like pizza should.' To celebrate the occasion, O'Neal is sending pizzas to organizations that support youth entrepreneurship and leadership in communities nearest and dearest to him, which include Orlando, Miami, Los Angeles, Baton Rouge, Las Vegas and Atlanta. 'At Papa John's, we're elevating the classics that have set us apart to deliver even more value to our customers,' said Papa John's Chief Marketing Officer Jenna Bromberg. 'Since it was first introduced five years ago, the Shaq-a-Roni has offered the craveable flavors pizza fans can find only at Papa John's. Now, it's here to deliver XL-sized value every day!' The pizza is now available year-round at $15.99 across Papa John's locations.
