3.2 magnitude earthquake strikes Thousand Palms near Indio
A preliminary 3.2 magnitude earthquake struck northeast of the Thousand Palms area near Indio Thursday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The quake was reported around 6:38 a.m. with a depth of about 4.50 miles.
Based on the
USGS Community Internet Intensity Map,
the quake had a level 3 or weak intensity. Shockwaves could be felt in nearby areas like Indio, Joshua Tree, Desert Hot Springs and Palm Springs.
A few dozen people reported feeling the quake, according to the USGS "Did You Feel It?" response tool.
No damage or injuries have been reported.

Denver rattled by rare earthquake
DENVER – Shaking was reported in Denver, Colorado, following a magnitude 2.9 earthquake Friday morning. The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake happened north of Denver, about 3 miles southwest of Dacono, Colorado. Light shaking was felt along Interstate 25 throughout Denver and surrounding towns. The quake was relatively shallow at 5.09 miles beneath the surface. According to the USGS, earthquakes in Denver are rare. There hasn't been a magnitude 3 or larger earthquake in the Denver metro area since 1981, when a magnitude 4.3 earthquake occurred in Northglenn, the USGS said. The USGS said Friday's earthquake was most likely felt because it was shallow, in a well-populated area and happened around the time people were awake and getting ready for the day. CIWW enacts ban on lawn watering as nitrate levels climb
DES MOINES, Iowa — Central Iowa Water Works (CIWW) announced on Thursday that a ban on lawn watering for residential and commercial customers will go into effect immediately. The CIWW said the ban is being put in place to prevent a violation in nitrate standards, as water treatment facilities have been working at full capacity for over 50 days to remove a nearly record high level of nitrates in the Raccoon and Des Moines rivers. According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the Raccoon River last measured nitrate levels at 15.4 mg/L and the Des Moines River measured levels at 17.3 mg/L. The federal drinking water standard is 10 mg/L. Deal's Orchard is a favorite Jefferson destination 'We are pulling all levers at our treatment facilities and nitrate removal processes to prevent a violation,' Tami Madsen, executive director of CIWW, said. 'Now we need full cooperation from the public. This is no longer a voluntary request.' The first-ever ban comes after CIWW asked for a voluntary 25% and then 50% reduction in lawn watering on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively. Officials said that any CIWW and DMWW customer, both residential and commercial, found to be watering lawns will be notified of the violation and may have water service disconnected if watering continues. The ban will remain in effect until further notice. CIWW said that treated drinking water still meets all state and federal regulations at this time.
