‘It was the best of times, it was the worst of times….' What the Dickens does it mean?

Indian Express01-05-2025

On April 30, 1859, All the Year Round, a London-based literary journal edited by Charles Dickens, published the opening installment of a new serialised story, A Tale of Two Cities. Its first sentence – paradoxical and poetic – would go on to become one of the most iconic opening lines in the world. The line, which was first published 166 years ago, might as well have been written yesterday with the way it continues to capture the zeitgeist.
In a handful of lines, Dickens captures the irrefutable truth that progress and regression, and peace and violence often walk hand in hand. The novel, which juxtaposes the two European cultural capitals: London and Paris, contrasts 'a time of chaos, conflicts, and despair' with 'happiness and hope'. For some, a revolution of any sort, political or technological, can be a 'spring of hope,' for others, it could be the 'winter of despair.' Dickens insists that these realities can, and do, coexist.
Why was it both the best and worst of times?
Though A Tale of Two Cities is set during the French Revolution (1787-1799), Dickens was writing as much about his own Victorian England as 18th-century France. He writes of the late 18th century, when political oppression in France gave way to revolutionary violence. In Dickens' own Victorian England—riddled with inequality, industrial unrest, and fears of upheaval—he found echoes of the same tensions that had been the precursor to the French Revolution.
The Industrial Revolution in England (1760–1840) had brought about sweeping changes—technological advances paired with immense social and economic suffering. In both movements, the wealthy elite lived in comfort, while laborers toiled in inhumane conditions, working long hours for minimal pay in crowded, unsanitary environments. In both centuries, Dickens saw a society defined by the paradox he lays down in the opening lines of the novel—prosperity shadowed by poverty, innovation accompanied by inequality.
'It was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness… It was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity…,' Dickens wrote, capturing the turbulence of the era and his own ambivalence about progress, revolution, and humanity itself.
Dickens vividly describes how the French Revolution transformed from righteous rebellion into a Reign of Terror. While the overthrow of the aristocracy is portrayed with sympathy, the bloodlust of the revolutionary mobs—embodied in characters like Madame Defarge—exposes the darker side of humanity. Dickens' opening lines capture the complexity of an age where guillotines shadowed the lofty ideals of liberty, equality, and fraternity.
Why does the opening continue to resonate?
In 2025, we live in a world of extremes: rapid technological advancement beside global inequality; astonishing wealth beside homelessness; political polarisation amid calls for unity; a pacifist society in an age of war. In many ways, it is again the best and worst of times. We, too, live in an age that feels both enlightened and misled, compassionate yet cruel.
Those timeless words – 'it was the best of times, it was the worst of times' – could well be a mirror held up to every age, including our own.

"Chris Martin, Dakota Johnson wanted to experience...": Sonali Bendre recalls her Babulnath Temple visit with Coldplay singer, Hollywood actress

New Delhi [India], June 7 (ANI): British band Coldplay's lead vocalist, Chris Martin, came to India earlier this year and surprised his desi fans not only with his soulful concerts but also with his spiritual side. Before his gigs at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on January 18 and 19, Chris, along with Hollywood actress Dakota Johnson, paid a sacred visit to the iconic Babulnath Temple. They were joined by Bollywood star Sonali Bendre and 'Swades' fame actress Gayatri Oberoi. Several images and videos went viral in which Chris, Dakota, Sonali and Gayatri were seen offering prayers. Dakota and Chris, who have now reportedly parted ways, embraced Indian culture with full devotion. Sonali and Gayatri also accompanied Dakota to the iconic Siddhivinayak Temple in Mumbai back in January. Dressed in traditional attire, the trio appeared to be in high spirits, engaging in a lively conversation as they made their way through the temple grounds. Recalling meeting Chris and Dakota, Sonali in an Interview with ANI, shared, ' She's (Dakota) such a lovely person. It was my yoga teacher who told me that, you know what, somebody is coming in and they want to be taken to a few temples. Will you do this? I'm like, okay, who is it? And that's how I get to know. So I think Chris and her (Dakota) wanted to have a temple experience. And I think that's an experience everybody should have at some point. It was lovely. With her (and Chris), the night before everybody got to know we had visited Babulnath Temple. And then the next day, we visited Siddhivinayak Temple.' Meanwhile, Chris and Dakota recently made headlines with their alleged break-up. A source informed US-based magazine PEOPLE about their split. 'It feels final this time,' one source said of the split. Reps for the stars did not respond to PEOPLE's requests for comment. In March 2024, an insider told PEOPLE that Johnson and Martin had actually been engaged for 'years' after first sparking engagement rumours in 2020, though they were 'in no rush to get married' at the time. When breakup rumors surfaced in August 2024, a rep for the actress shut down the reports and said the pair were 'happily together.' Around the same time, a source said, 'Sure, they've had issues and taken breaks in the past, but things are great now. They both love their careers. They are balancing things the best they can.' Prior to that, a source said in June 2024 that Johnson and Martin, who mostly kept their relationship private, had their 'ups and downs, but now they're definitely back on.' Chris and Dakota have not addressed their separation rumours yet. (ANI)

Many viewers have deemed the act inappropriate and disrespectful to Hindu traditions. The vlogger, identified as Maheen Shajahan shared the video on his Instagram handle where he was seen entering the temple with his friends and greeting them by placing a sindoor on their foreheads. 'Muslim boy in Kerala Temple; In Kerala, faith isn't a barrier – it's a bridge. As a Muslim visiting a Hindu temple with my foreign friends, I felt nothing but warmth, welcome, and peace. Here, in this lush corner of India, religious harmony isn't just an idea – it's lived every day. We respect. We celebrate. We share. Different paths, one love," he captioned the video. However, the clip quickly drew backlash online, with many netizens accusing him of misusing a sacred Hindu practice. 'Sindoor', the Hindi word for vermillion that married Hindu women apply to their foreheads, holds age-old significance in Hinduism. Traditionally worn by Indian women to signify their married status, 'sindoor' is first applied by a woman's husband during the 'pheras' (ritual related to marriage) on their wedding day. Amid the backlash, Shajahan clarified that none of the women in his video objected to his actions. 'I was very aware that married people put this (sindoor) but I wasn't aware that this was such an important thing and no other person can put it. If I would have known, I wouldn't have done that cause I'm a traveller and I try to respect all religions even though I don't believe in religion," he clarified in a statement given to Brut India. He also said that some were misusing his clip to fuel communal tensions, and apologised to those whose sentiments were hurt. top videos View All The video uploaded by Brut India went viral and many took to the comments to share their views on it. One user commented, 'Why is there so much intolerance in India?" Another user said, 'It's acceptable in movies but it's not for the reels." Shajahan left a comment on the video as well. 'Peace peace peace. I never tried to offend any religion. As a Malayali, I had the freedom to enter all the religious centers in Kerala without problems. I never had to face any backlash. We lived in peace. Unfortunately time changed and nowadays politics dividing people," he wrote. About the Author Shobhit Gupta First Published:
