The new 727bhp BMW M5 is big, beautiful and bloody ballistic plus it's a PHEV for the first time ever

The Irish Sun24-04-2025

LAST week, I completed Bumblebee 1000's latest roadtrip in the ballistic new BMW M5.
This incredible machine is the most powerful M5 ever, and also the first plug-in hybrid M5.
Combined, its 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8, 145kw electric motor and 18.6kWh battery produce a supercar-rivalling 727bhp and 1,000Nm of torque.
It's astonishingly fast, able to blitz 0-100kph in just 3.5 seconds, and with the optional M Drivers Package it will keep charging all the way to 305kph.

But fitting the engine and hybrid system into a big five-door family saloon adds weight.
And the fact the new M5 tips the scales at 2,510kg has been a huge topic of discussion.

But the majority of those complaining about the weight have not driven it, because if you did, then you would understand how incredible a job the BMW boffins have done to mask that weight.
When cornering hard on uneven surfaces or under heavy braking, sure, you notice the weight, but you really have to be pushing the M5 to the max.

When driven sensibly it's a very comfortable long-distance cruiser, and if you keep the battery charged it's economical too.
BMW quote a 148.7mpg figure.
I didn't see results as good as that but on my way to Bumblebee, I filled the M5 with petrol in Newry and drove to Barberstown Castle near Dublin and the gauge just dipped below full.

BRING THE NOISE: It comes fitted with an M Exhaust but it could be louder to really let that big V8 sound its best as that's the only area the M5 is lacking
Credit: Paddy McGrath www.pmcgphotos.com

And it does have a very useful 70km electric-only range too.
But step on the gas and the M5 has the power to annihilate the Autobahn with ease.
It will explode into life, pinning you back in your seat as it relentlessly slams through all of its eight gears at an alarming rate, making wonderful noises out of the twin-exit dual exhausts.
But my one complaint is that it could be louder, even fitted with the M Exhaust — I'd love to hear more roar from that big V8.
Behind the steering wheel are two discrete M1 and M2 buttons that allow you to quickly switch between different set-ups for engine, chassis, steering and brakes, so choose M2 for manic and M1 for the full maniac mode.

You can also switch the M5's all-wheel-drive M xDrive system from 4WD to 2WD.
However this is best suited to track driving as you wouldn't be long burning through a set of rear tyres.
My test car came fitted with the optional M Carbon-Ceramic Brakes that are incredible, doing a phenomenal job of bringing the big Beemer to a stop.

It also came with M Performance Parts that add carbon door mirror, boot spoiler and exhaust tips — even the roof is carbon fibre.

BOOT SIZE: The M5's boot offers 466 litres of luggage space

LAP OF LUXURY: BMW's curved dual screens take centre stage, there's heated and cooled front seats and heated rear seats
Credit: Paddy McGrath www.pmcgphotos.com
Inside, the cabin is superb as you'd imagine from a flagship BMW.

The curved dual screens dominate the dash, with carbon trim everywhere.
The sports seats are superb, heated and air-cooled, the M badge lights up at night and there's heated seats in the back as well.
The M5 saloon starts at €137,055 and the Touring model is a few grand more, starting at €139,515 and that's a lot of money.

Its little brother the M3 is actually more expensive as it starts from €154,395, but the M5 is more powerful, and as it's a PHEV, it's much cheaper to tax.

Shock moment brazen Manchester Airport worker WEES on driver's Range Rover in long-stay carpark

A HOLIDAYMAKER was 'disgusted' when his Tesla's security camera caught an airport's 'meet and greet' parking attendant deliberately urinating up against a customer's brand new Range Rover. The traveller had just landed in Turkey for a week-long break when he received a motion alert. 4 The worker in a hi-vis vest can be seen checking for any onlookers moments before 4 He walked from side to side to cover the car He was stunned when he logged in to find a male employee at Manchester's Terminal 1 relieving himself up against another vehicle. The parking attendant unzips his trousers on May 25 at 12.30am before walking up to the £70,000 white Range Rover - taking a leak against the side bodywork. The 30-second clip even captures him moving in a side-to-side motion for maximum coverage. The man said: 'Shortly after arriving in Turkey, I received a motion alert from my vehicle's security system. Read more 'Curious, I checked the footage - initially thinking it was just a staff member moving the cars - but as the video continued, I was absolutely stunned by what I saw. 'It appeared that the worker, rather than simply relieving himself discreetly, urinated all over a customer's car. 'I was completely disgusted. It's one thing if nature calls unexpectedly- but to do that on someone's vehicle? It's vile and completely unacceptable. 'What makes it worse is imagining families returning from their holidays, unknowingly touching contaminated door handles and loading their kids into those cars. Most read in Motors 'It's revolting to think about.' The staff member is in uniform, wearing a high-vis jacket with his hood up. The shocked holidaymaker, who paid £70 for the week-long parking, added: 'Needless to say, my car will be getting a full valet when I return. I chose the meet and greet service for peace of mind, expecting my vehicle to be safe and returned in the same condition I left it. 'Instead, I've lost all trust in this service. 'I genuinely feel awful for the owner of the car targeted. It was a brand-new 25-plate 'That kind of disrespect is beyond comprehension. 'I won't be using this service again. 'Next time, I'll just book a taxi—at least then I'll know my car is safe and clean at home.' The incident last week was at Terminal 1, with the car park service run by the airport. An airport spokesman said: 'The behaviour shown in this video is completely unacceptable and does not represent the conduct we expect from any of our colleagues. 'While it is an isolated incident and not reflective of our wider team, we want to apologise to anyone offended by the incident. 'We have a zero tolerance approach to this kind of behaviour and, with that in mind, it will be dealt with in line with our disciplinary procedures." Complaints included reports of cars being stolen, damaged, dumped in fields, and even driven thousands of miles on joy rides. One firm had crashed a couple's brand new £157k BMW, and another traveller said they returned from an eight-week trip to find 3,000 miles had been added to their mileage clock. Some companies were moving vehicles to fields or abandoning them on residential streets while owners were on holiday. 4 The vile act was captured on camera at the airport 4 The incident went down at Manchester Airport Credit: Getty

BMW 1 Series used cars: I've driven 47 used hatchback cars – this BMW is by far a standout

OK, so 47 is an estimate, but I have driven a lot of hatchbacks, and the BMW Series 1 is a standout. The quintessential hatchback is, of course, the Golf, which in all its incarnations has delivered – but the BMW pips it, and I'll explain why. Advertisement 4 I'd always associated BMWs with committed middle managers driving company cars. A few minutes behind the wheel of the BMW Series 1 M Sport changed all that. I'm not going to say that the VW Golf has had its day (or make a joke that the current version of the car is as unfashionable as the sport, as that would be cruel). But the BMW Series 1 does everything you need a hatch to do – but better than the others. What is a hatchback? A hatchback is a car with a large rear door that opens to create a large boot space. Advertisement READ MORE BUYING USED CARS Hatchback cars are flexible. You can typically carry 4 or more passengers in comfort. When you need extra carrying space, you can lower the back seats. (Make sure the passengers aren't in there first.) The VW Golf pretty much defined what a hatchback is and what it does, and – despite what we've written above – we still love it. Reviewers know it still does the business, but the Golf spawned a whole lot of imitators – some of which are now ready to challenge for the hatchback king's crown. Advertisement Most read in Buy Benefits of a hatchback Small, manoeuvrable, great handling Excellent visibility from the large rear window Sporty looks (especially souped-up variants, including GTI, M Sport, FR, etc.) Versatile, with space for 4 passengers and luggage Fold-down seats provide extra carrying capacity Perfect for families, city drivers or country dwellers BMW 1 Series: An overview When you're buying a hatchback, it's 50% heart and 50% head. It's got to look great and have the speed and performance you want. It's also got to be fuel efficient, reliable and – in these cash-strapped times – affordable. Let's work through the list. The BMW 1 Series looks, to me, fantastic. Looks are personal, so feel free to disagree. Advertisement The M Sport version goes above and beyond with 18' alloys, a rear spoiler and splitters, as well as a full leather interior and a beast of an engine. (Ticks box) It's hard to argue with performance. The majority of modern (post-2019) Series 1s are front-wheel drive with either a 3- or 4-cylinder engine. Front-wheel drive makes more space for luggage at the back without impacting the driving experience, which is impeccable. (Ticks box) In-car entertainment and tech is top-notch, as you'd expect on a premium BMW.
