UN warns of ‘massive trauma' for Gaza's children amid renewed Israeli assault - War on Gaza

Al-Ahram Weekly21-03-2025

The UN warned Friday that all of Gaza's approximately one million children were facing "massive trauma" as Israel's assault on the war-ravaged territory resumed, and amid dire aid shortages.
Humanitarians described an alarming situation in Gaza, amid a growing civilian death toll since Israel resumed aerial bombardment and ground operations this week after a six-week ceasefire.
Sam Rose, the senior deputy field director in Gaza for the UN agency for Palestinian refugees UNRWA, highlighted the psychological shock for already traumatized children to once again find themselves beneath the bombs.
This is a "massive, massive trauma for the one million children" living in the Palestinian territory, he told reporters in Geneva, speaking from Gaza.
The breakdown of the ceasefire that took effect on January 19 comes as the population is already dramatically weakened from 15 months of brutal Israeli war that has killed more than 48,000 people.
"It's worse this time," Rose warned, "because people are already exhausted, they're already degraded, their immune systems, their mental health, (and) populations on the verge of famine."
"Children who had come back to school after 18 months out of school, now back in tents,... hearing the bombardment around them constantly."
"It's fear on top of fear, cruelty on top of cruelty, and tragedy on top of tragedy."
'Nightmare'
James Elder, a spokesman for the UN children's agency UNICEF, said traumatized children usually only start to process their trauma when they begin returning to normalcy.
"Psychologists would say our absolute nightmare is that they return home and then it starts again," he told reporters.
"That's the terrain that we've now entered," he said, warning that Gaza was the only "example in modern history in terms of an entire child population needing mental health support".
"That's no exaggeration."
Gaza's civil defence agency said 504 people had been killed since Tuesday, including more than 190 under the age of 18.
Khalil al-Daqran, Gaza's Health Ministry spokesperson, said on Thursday that at least 710 Palestinians have been killed and more than 900 injured in Gaza since Israel resumed its war, adding that 70 percent of the casualties were women and children.
It has also been a deadly period for humanitarians, with seven UNRWA staff killed just since the ceasefire broke down, bring the total number killed from that agency alone to 284 since the Gaza war began.
A Bulgarian worker with another UN agency was also killed this week, as was a local staff member of Doctors Without Borders, the medical charity said Friday.
'Massive shortages'
Humanitarians warned the situation on the ground has been made worse by Israel's decision earlier this month to cut off aid and electricity to Gaza over the deadlock in negotiations to prolong the ceasefire.
"We were able to bring in more supplies in during the six weeks of the ceasefire than ... in the previous six months," Rose said, warning though that that progress was "being reversed".
Currently, he said, there is only enough flour supply in Gaza for another six days.
Rose warned that if aid is not restored, "we will see a gradual slide back into what we saw in the worst days of the conflict in terms of looting ... and desperate conditions among the population".
Elder meanwhile described the vital aid items that aid agencies were unable to bring into Gaza.
"We've got 180,000 doses of vaccines a few kilometres away that are life-saving and are blocked," he said.
He also pointed to a "massive shortage" of incubators in Gaza even as pre-term births were surging.
"We have dozens of them, again sitting across the border," he said. "Blocked ventilators for babies."

UPDATED: Israel kills 90 Palestinians in 48 hours as Gaza death toll keeps rising - War on Gaza

Hospitals across Gaza received the bodies of 90 Palestinians and over 600 wounded in the past 48 hours, the Health Ministry said Saturday, as Israel's war on the besieged Strip pushes the death toll past 55,000 amid relentless attacks and systematic targeting of aid distribution zones. At least 27 Palestinians were killed and dozens wounded early Saturday as Israeli forces intensified shelling across the Gaza Strip, with the heaviest bombardments reported in central areas, according to the Palestinian news agency WAFA. Local sources told WAFA that Israeli troops opened live fire on civilians gathered near aid distribution points in central Gaza, killing 15 and injuring many others. Israel has repeatedly targeted aid centres operated by the US-Israeli-run Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF). Israel has killed at least 274, and injured 2,532 since the systematic targeting of people near aid distribution areas began. In Gaza City, medical officials reported five bodies brought to Al-Shifa Hospital, including two people killed in an airstrike on a tent near Al-Khaldi Mosque. Artillery was also struck the eastern al-Tuffah neighbourhood. In Khan Younis, three civilians were killed in a drone strike near the Islamic University, according to local reports cited by WAFA. The Palestinian Health ministry further indicated that since Israel broke the ceasfiren on 18 March, 2025, the occupation army has killed 5,014 Palestinians with 16,385 injured. Since 7 October 2023, Israel's genocidal war on Gaza has killed 55,297 Palestinians, the majority women and injured nearly 128,426 others, the ministry added. Over 11,000 remain missing, presumed buried under the rubble. Follow us on: Facebook Instagram Whatsapp Short link:

OIC: Israel Plans to Seize Area C in West Bank

Mohamed Mandour The Organization of Islamic Cooperation's Media Observatory for Israeli Crimes against Palestinians reported that there were 460 martyrs and 1,939 wounded in just one week, from June 3 to June 9, 2025. From October 7, 2023, to June 9, 2025, the total number of martyrs reached 56,260, with 134,586 wounded. Many martyrs were killed while searching for aid, including over 111 Palestinians who lost their lives while looking for food. Additionally, 583 people were injured and nine are missing while seeking assistance. Most were killed by Israeli fire targeting various areas of Gaza, including tents for displaced persons and civilian homes. Data from the United Nations indicates that rates of acute malnutrition among children in Gaza have tripled since the last ceasefire. UNICEF issued an appeal for an end to the war, emphasizing that using starvation as a "weapon" constitutes a war crime. This statement follows increasing references to the term "genocide" by Western officials. Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prévost has stated that he personally believes the situation in Gaza amounts to genocide. In a recent airstrike, three paramedics and a journalist were killed while recovering bodies in the Tuffah neighborhood of Gaza. Israeli forces also bombed the Baptist Hospital, resulting in the deaths of four additional journalists, bringing the total number of journalists killed in the Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip to 228. The Observatory noted that occupation forces are intensifying pressure on the healthcare sector by doubling the number of wounded, exceeding the capacity of hospitals in the Gaza Strip to provide treatment due to restrictions and a lack of necessary equipment and resources. The Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor confirmed that occupation forces have deliberately bombed hospitals in Gaza, using pretexts and falsehoods. Occupation forces have also destroyed homes in the Qarara area of Khan Yunis and the Jabalia refugee camp as part of their displacement policy and arming Palestinian militias. Meanwhile, Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich has stated that the occupation government has a plan that includes imposing sovereignty over Area C, displacing the residents of Khan al-Ahmar, and disrupting the banking system. Additionally, occupation forces have notified the owners of 100 homes in the Jenin refugee camp of their impending demolition. Al-Aqsa Mosque faces almost daily raids, with extremist settlers attempting to bring bloodied meat into the mosque for sacrifice, only to be stopped by Al-Aqsa guards. The occupation authorities continue to prohibit Muslims from entering the Ibrahimi Mosque in Hebron, refusing to hand over the mosque and its facilities to Muslims on the first day of Eid al-Adha, as they have done on Fridays and during Laylat al-Qadr in Ramadan, as well as Eid al-Fitr. Settlers attacked the Armenian Monastery in Al-Quds, spitting on the monastery, crosses, and holy symbols. In the West Bank, the number of raids conducted by occupation forces in cities and towns reached 302, resulting in the arrest of 166 Palestinians. Tragically, they also killed a child in Ramallah and wounded two others in Nablus. During the same week, they raided the Al-Tahadi School in the village of Khirbet Ibziq, while settlers were present near the Nour al-Huda School on the outskirts of Beitunia in Ramallah. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Business Fear & Greed Index Plummets to Lowest Level Ever Recorded amid Global Trade War Arts & Culture Zahi Hawass: Claims of Columns Beneath the Pyramid of Khafre Are Lies News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks News Shell Unveils Cost-Cutting, LNG Growth Plan Videos & Features Video: Trending Lifestyle TikToker Valeria Márquez Shot Dead during Live Stream Technology 50-Year Soviet Spacecraft 'Kosmos 482' Crashes into Indian Ocean News 3 Killed in Shooting Attack in Thailand

Gaza civil defence says Israel killed 15 Palestinians near aid centre - War on Gaza

The Gaza civil defence agency said that 15 people were killed Tuesday when Israeli forces fired at people trying to enter a food distribution centre, while Israel's military acknowledged firing "warning shots". There have been a series of deadly incidents since the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) first opened aid distribution points in the Palestinian territory on May 27, with Israel facing mounting international protests over humanitarian conditions. Gaza civil defence agency spokesman Mahmud Bassal told AFP that 12 people were killed when Israeli quadcopters opened fire on people waiting to enter a GHF distribution centre in central Gaza, "at 6 or 7 am" Tuesday. Bassal also said that between 2:30 am and 5 am on Tuesday, three people were killed by Israeli fire and shelling north of Wadi Gaza as they waited to enter the same distribution centre. "Several thousand civilians and hungry individuals had gathered in the hope of reaching the American aid centre near the Wadi Gaza bridge and the Netzarim corridor", Bassal told AFP. The Netzarim corridor is a strip of land militarised by Israel that bisects Gaza from the Israeli border to the Mediterranean and cuts off the north from the rest of the territory. Al-Awda hospital in central Gaza's Nuseirat camp said it had received three bodies and 100 wounded from the incident near the Wadi Gaza bridge. In light of restrictions imposed on media in the Gaza Strip and the difficulties of access on the ground, AFP is not able to independently verify the death tolls announced by the civil defence agency.
