Belgian soldiers involved in Kinloss military exercise injured in shooting incident

Three Belgian soldiers who have been part of a military training exercise based at Kinloss were injured in a shooting incident.
The three soldiers are believed to be in a stable condition, with one awaiting surgery in Scotland before returning to Belgium.
A further 10 soldiers also sustained hearing damage as a result of the incident, according to the Belgian defence minister.
The location of the incident has not been confirmed, but last week, The Press and Journal reported that the Belgian Army is taking part in a large-scale operation in Moray.
The exercise, named Red Condor, involved around 600 soldiers. The operation also meant a fleet of large vehicles and helicopters could be seen in the north-east.
It has been widely reported that a spokesman for Belgium's defence ministry said: 'The incident took place during a planned training exercise. An investigation has been launched to determine the exact circumstances.'
'The families of the injured personnel have been informed.'
The Belgian prime minister Bart De Wever posted on X that he had been informed that three members of the Third Parachute Battalion had been injured.
He wished them a speedy recovery and offered his condolences to their loved ones.
Kinloss Barracks in Moray are hosting helicopters from the Belgian Armed Forces and are expected to stay at the base until May 20.
During this period, it is expected that they will be involved in night flying.
The base said that this could cause a 'slight disruption' to locals.

French Open ban announced as fans threatened with removal from Roland Garros

Fans will be banned from drinking alcohol in the stands at the French Open (Image: Johnny Fidelin/Icon Sport via Getty Images) French Open chiefs will ban supporters from drinking alcohol in the stands as they look to clampdown on bad behaviour. The second major of the year kicks off in Paris on Sunday, with Carlos Alcaraz the defending men's champion. Tennis bosses have been battling against a deteriorating level of fan behaviour during matches. At last year's tournament at Roland Garros, one supporter allegedly spat chewing gum at Belgian star David Goffin during his win over Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard. Tournament chiefs responded by introducing a mid-event alcohol ban in the stands. There is little sign that fan behaviour could improve, with a number of incidents during the Italian Open over the last fortnight. Women's world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka told a fan to 'shut the f*** up' after they yelled out at her during her quarter-final defeat to Zheng Qinwen. In the previous round, world No. 22 Clara Tauson confronted a crowd member who heckled her after she served a double fault against Mirra Andreeva, asking, 'Who are you?' before imploring the umpire to intervene. Meanwhile, men's star Jakub Menšík was involved in a similar confrontation during his match against Fábián Marozsán. That has convinced French Open chiefs to bring in firm rules for supporters. She warned that any fan whose behaviour falls below standards will be removed from the stands. "It will be fully renewed this year. You can obviously consume in the aisles. But once you're on a court, that's it. And if we notice any incidents, we don't hesitate to evacuate spectators," she told Ouest-France. "I also think that the post-Covid period has given people the desire to express themselves differently and more fully, to let go. And not just at sporting events." Tournament Director Amélie Mauresmo has brought in the ban (Image: Antonio Borga/Eurasia) Alcaraz wrapped up his preparation for this year's tournament by winning the Italian Open, beating Jannick Sinner in Sunday's final. He is now totally focused on winning at Roland Garros for a second successive year. 'I'm just really happy to get my first Rome [title], hopefully it's not going to be the last one,' he said. 'The first thing I want to say is that I'm just really happy to see Jannik back at this amazing level. "I'm sure it wasn't easy for him coming back after three months and making the final of a Masters 1000 in his first tournament [back]. It's something insane, so I have to congratulate him. I'm proud of myself, with the way I approached the match mentally. "Tactically, I think I played pretty well from the first point until the last one. I didn't do a rollercoaster… I maintained my good level throughout the whole match, so I'm really proud about everything I did today. 'All eyes are on Paris right now, on Roland Garros. Beating Jannik, winning Rome, both things mix together and give great confidence going to Paris. I always say 'The final is not about playing, the final is about winning'. I just repeat everytime I play a final.' Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Belgium probing NATO staff over defence contract irregularities

BRUSSELS, May 14 (Reuters) - Belgian judicial authorities said they are investigating former and current NATO staff and have arrested one suspect over possible irregularities in awarding contracts for NATO military equipment. The Federal Public Prosecutor's Office said in a statement on Wednesday that, as part of an investigation into membership of a criminal organisation, corruption and money laundering, police arrested and questioned two suspects in Belgium on Monday. One remains in custody, while the other has been released. The arrests were made as part of criminal investigations in Belgium, with offshoots to the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and Spain, and in the Netherlands - coordinated by the EU agency for criminal justice cooperation Eurojust. The investigations focus on possible irregularities in awarding NATO contracts to defence contractors for equipment such as ammunition and drones, notably the possible passing-on of confidential information by employees of the Luxembourg-based NATO Support & Procurement Agency (NSPA) to defence contractors. Belgian prosecutors added that several former or current NSPA employees could be involved and that there were indications that money obtained from the illegal practices was laundered, partly by setting up consultancy companies. They added that NATO was cooperating with the investigations. A NATO spokesperson said that, thanks to an investigation initiated by NSPA, law enforcement authorities in a number of countries had arrested several individuals accused of corrupt activities related to NATO contracts. "NATO is working closely with law enforcement to ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice," the spokesperson said. Late on Tuesday, the Dutch Public Prosecution office said it had arrested a former Dutch defence ministry employee on corruption charges. The suspect - who was arrested on Monday at Schiphol Airport - was responsible for international purchase contracts. The man is suspected of having taken bribes in 2023 over the awarding of purchase contracts, together with others, some of them outside the Netherlands. Two other Dutch suspects - who were not civil servants - were also arrested as part of the case.

Dunfermline couple flee for their lives as coach careers towards them during crash

A Dunfermline man has told of the moment he and his partner fled for their lives as a coach careered towards them during a crash. Richard Keane, 62, and Shirley Stewart, 64, were sitting on a bench in Dinnet in Royal Deeside, Aberdeenshire, when the coach and a car crashed on the A93 road through the village. The couple realised the coach was then heading straight for them and ran out the way with seconds to spare. Speaking to The Courier's sister paper, The Press and Journal, Richard said: 'We had just sat down for five minutes on the bench when the coach came careering towards us. 'I was looking out over the hills, but Shirley saw it coming over my shoulder. 'We both heard a big bang, and she saw the coach come through the wall, mount the white car and then drive the car towards us. 'It was like something from a Hollywood movie.' Richard says that in his panic, he initially ran into the path of the coach. However, he was able to get out the way before the bus and the car hit the bench below the tree where the couple had been sitting moments earlier. Richard says if they had not moved away, the coach 'would most definitely have hit them'. He said: 'Even though I got out of the way, there was a lot of debris flying up the car park. 'I thought I was going to get seriously injured. 'Shirley ran away and dived to the side. 'She was upset afterwards because she didn't see me at that point – all she knew was that she'd seen me run in the wrong direction. 'I managed to dust myself off and head round to where she was. 'I am amazed that no one got hit by a rock or a stone or a bit of car. They were coming at some speed. 'It makes you think that someone's looking down on you.' Richard said he was unable to go to work on Monday due to the shock of the incident. However, the couple plan on returning to Deeside in a few weeks. A police spokesperson said there were 'no reports of any serious injuries' following the crash.
